    I’m in 6a. Same exact weather you’re having. I’m over it. I went ahead and planted out my tomatoes the other day. Got totally fed up with taking them in and out. They’re the same size as yours too and were quite dry when I took them out of their pots. After a deep drenching followed by a good rain, they’re doing great. I’ve got a cold cover for night just in case 😂

    Last year we had glorious weather and my friend's husband planted out the garden 4 days before the true planting date and we had a big freeze two days later and he lost all his plants. 40+ tomato plants, peppers, all the tender plants. He had to pull up all the seedlings he had babied for months and go to the garden center to replenish his garden. I believe he shed a tear or two.
    He will wait for the last frost date this year 😉
    My friend had refused to plant out her annuals and hasn't let him forget about it, lol

    Your pond is beautiful, as well as your patio. You likely laid it yourselves, right?
    Your tomatoes look super healthy! But yes, they are ready to be planted. Those peppers! I've NEVER seen such large healthy seedlings. Never, until yours.

  • @dustyflats3832
    @dustyflats3832 Před měsícem +2

    😅Thanks for interrupting political drama BS that I was getting fed to me.
    Now, yes, let’s talk planting out. This is what I am doing Z5a, WI. I have potted up petunias and geraniums. Perennials that I know are fairly hardy are starting to go in and even some new to me. Yesterday I started sweet peppers-remember late February when we were so cabin fevered and you said get off your butt-well…I planted peppers and normally wouldn’t until end of March 😅. I may still mark that date for Hot peppers except the Megatrons, but will plant late March for others. I am using 9 gauge wire and frost cloth and the peppers will be fine. If temps go below 40 the plastic will go over frost cloth. Peppers and tomatoes don’t like below 50 but I’m not striving for blossoms just yet just growth.
    I check future cast on Accuweather for my zip code. It’s not a sure thing but close enough and I didn’t see any severe cold temps. What is happening is the La Niña weather pattern is returning and that means the NW is experiencing some cold shots. It also means the jet stream is getting more regulated and bringing us rain finally-not much but it’s getting there.
    I figure it’s time for plants to sink or swim. The greenhouse is overcrowded and bright light is hard to find for some and yet this watering over/under isn’t good either. The racks aren’t level and not everyone gets a drink.
    There is a hand full of low to mid 40s and I will just be ready with plastic if needed as this is the earliest I’ve ever planted-frost date 5/12. I know I’m pushing it however with all this warmth all winter I think this has been our best spring in a long time. I did hold the reins on starting tomatoes and glad I did or it would be a real traffic jam. I used the Bootstrap 4cell and are about the same volume as a solo cup. I filled them half full, sowed seeds, separated extras then filled once they were above cell. They are happy inside and will be the right size to go direct to garden. The orange hat almost has a ripe tomato-we are waiting to share the tiny morsel with loads more coming.
    I’ve really been working hard at planting and fencing. I have a running list going in my head. I gotta this, I gotta that. Like you I have volunteers especially poppies and celantro. The pops have to get thinned again and I already yanked a bunch out.
    About the butterfly milkweed-they get a taproot, some say they don’t transplant well and I haven’t had a problem with the orange. The yellow seems not as vigorous and treating it special. The orange is popping up everywhere after I thought I removed it from a location. I don’t mind I just let it be. It’s been probably 4-5 years I’ve been growing it. 😅 those red poppies though-🤦‍♀️ they are on a mission. Then I read they will cross pollinate with other poppies of same type and of course I have two others of same type. They would need like 250’ separation and I guess we will see next year what kind of Picasso I created.😅
    The robin built in our eve trough this year and I figured out why- she complained the ladder was moved from behind the shed and our house was her alternate home.
    Work so fast without breaks to get things planted with these wonderful overcast days and before hopeful rain. Need to get more irrigation supplies to finish connections and expansions.
    So much happening and the orioles showed up and no oranges 😮. I have one rooster that has stayed by my side for the last two days and even laid down. He was just being lazy as he has plenty of pep.
    So your tomatoes look more than ready to go in and just use some frost cloths as I’m sure you will stay warmer than here. If anything just do half. I have had that midget (that’s not so midget) tomato outside the last few nights and is doing well. The biggest thing about peppers and tomatoes is the cold slows them down and they say blossom dropping. As long as that’s all and no frost to freeze the leaves I’m good to go. FYI the crazy frost last May 25 did freeze most but they will regrow as long as they have some green.
    We’ve had low 40s and plants are fine-tomato and peppers looked great today and out all night at 40.6*F.

    • @ourbackyardgarden
      @ourbackyardgarden  Před měsícem +1

      Yeah last year's late frost made me afraid. It's hard to cover 68 tomatoes. But I think I'm starting Monday. We sowed corn yesterday. Tithonia petunias and a bunch of flowers are out and thriving. Petunias are bloomed. Funny we pulled out native milkweed today. Huge taproot! Raining here too. The wall project is a nightmare 😫

      @@ourbackyardgarden oh, the petunias-yes, I’m not too happy with blue from swallowtail and Jung’s. Last year I had the double orchid mist-nice. This year was supposed to be double valentine and double blue, but the blue so far are singles-the real test is to see how they age. Hopefully they stay compact and blooming.
      There is always the chance of freeze up to June 1st here, but I need to move on and I guess predict my own weather as last year we were not warned.
      Seen a flock of pelicans today-never use to see them until last few years.
      Well it sounds like your weather is warm. It would be fairly easy to drape light frost cloth if needed. It is work with all the clips and dunnage but it’s temporary. Lol, I’ve already raced out late at night to do just that. Who says we don’t know how to have a great time🤣

    Hi Leigh - it’s been crazy with temperatures in the last two weeks! I started hardening off in the greenhouse very early last week because I had to get my plants out of the house. We had a huge family party and the plants took up too much space. And since they did very well at hardening off, I planted the tomatoes last Thursday, and the peppers on Friday. My peppers are much smaller, so when the temps dropped, I covered them up with a frost barrier. They have all made it through the chilly nights! I have a huge amount weeding and transplanting of flowers and milkweed now, darn near a weeks worth of gardening to get it all right.
    My allergies and asthma have kept me down over the last three weeks; when I can breathe I get outside. When I can’t, I’m looking out my windows. Hopefully my doctor can find a solution.
    Do you have any problems with squirrels? I have one that has destroyed my greenstalks - my kale, onions, peas, and lettuce. I’ve had to resort to passive squirrel ticklers - like wire and bamboo sticks - to cover my seedlings in the hopes that the squirrel stays out of my garden.
    I can’t wait to see the front yard project!
    And many of my overwintering black swallowtails have emerged, with many more to come. I sometimes get three a day. It’s fun to wish them off…I always talk to them about their mother who laid them on parsley the year before, how beautiful she was, and how I hope they make good decisions…😂all silly stuff!

But we have bird issues. We just hung a 50x50 net over pipes to save our berries. We just came in from working outside since this morning. Nowhere near done. Weeds are horrific everything needs to be planted. Projects not finished. All suffocating. Wish we could have a coffee and chat.
