  • The star ascidian (Botryllus schlosseri) in the intertidal zone at Ventnor on the Isle of Wight. The star ascidian is a colonial sea squirt, that colonises hard objects such as rocks, wood and large slow moving animals in subtidal and intertidal environments. Colonies often exist in large clumps with each other, the zooids in an individual colony forming the star pattern. Bizarrely sea squirts like the star ascidian are the closest invertebrate relatives to humans.
