  • Distracted dining: we're all guilty of it. Whether we're wrapped up in conversation or our cell phones, it makes it tough to enjoy a meal. And that's why a new restaurant in Brooklyn is doing something completely different.
At Japanese ramen restaurant Ichiran in bush wick, 30 tables -- or flavor concentration booths as they're called -- are separated by partitions. You order your meal on a white form. In about 20 minutes your server hands you your bowl through a small window.
To the doorway when you walk in to the call button at your table is activated by sensors. In other words, you can go through your entire meal without having to talk to a single person.
While you do have to silence your phone (as silence is the whole point) thankfully, for the foodies out there cameras are always welcome.

Reporter: Distracted dining. We’re all guilty of it, whether we are wrapped up in conversation or busy on our cell phones, it makes it really tough to enjoy a meal. That’s why a new restaurant in Brooklyn is trying something completely different.
Sometimes you just want to sit down and eat your food in peace.
Restaurant owner: The concept here is, er, solo dining. Er, it’s dining without any distractions. Distractions from employees, distractions from, er, noise, from even your friends.
Reporter: At Japanese ramen restaurant Ichiran in Bushwick, thirty tables, or “flavor concentration booths”, as they’re called, are separated by partitions. You order your meal on a white form, and in about twenty minutes, your server hands you your bowl through a small window.
Restaurant owner: Everything is arranged so that I don’t have to see the employee’s face, and vice-versa.
Reporter: And everything, from the electronic seating chart in the lobby…
Owner: This kanji over here, the Chinese character that means it’s, er, a seat is available. And, er, when it’s lit in green that means, er, you can sit yourself in that seat.
Reporter: To the doorway when you walk in, to the call button at your table, it’s activated by sensors. In other words, you can go through your entire meal without having to talk to a single person.
Owner: It’s just a really, really fun, er, interaction between you, your ramen and your taste buds.
Customer #1: Sometimes you really need to concentrate on the flavors. It takes a lot of concentration, ha ha ha…
Customer #2: Especially as someone who writes about food, sometimes you go out with your friends, you get distracted and you’re like, “Oh, man! What did that taste like?”
Reporter: And while you do have to silence your phone, as silence is the whole point, thankfully for the foodies out there, cameras are always welcome.
Customer #2: I’m all about the photography and the Instagram, so it’s awesome. And the bowls look beautiful, so it’s perfect.
