Amazing
It’s a amazing vid!😊
the table falling at the beginning was just 😂
At 145 I'm probably in trouble 😂
Congrats if you got this far in scrolling.
Video idea:
Use two ballistic dummies and see what rounds would stop if they were a foot or more apart. The purpose is to mimic if you were standing behind someone and they happened to be shot. If you were at the wrong place at the wrong time for someone being shot in front of you. If it does pass through, what calibers would be fatal?
This comment deserves more likes that it has
My hypothesis is that at higher calibers like 7.62x39, .308 will hit the next person behind but 5.56 and lower maybe? Probably not because of yawing.
That's really how I see this video already. Hell, it's titled "Could Body Fat Save Your Life ??? (Can Body Fat Stop Bullets?)", nowhere does it specify who's body fat it needs to be.
That is a great idea. It's something I wonder about all the time. And I agree with the person who said your comment deserves more likes.
@@MrMcPotter 😂
I'm watching this at work from an ER. And I can assure you that "urban body armor" is a real thing. I literally just scanned a person who was shot, and the bullet traveled across their back fat and missed all their organs and spine. Love your videos!
Do you have any anecdotes over whether or not being absolutely Jacked has a similar effect?
Some people have backs 🤔
Fried chicken and Faygo armo
@@1stCallipostle muscle is very dense, so it would have a similair effect (probably a fair bit better for the equal amount of volume) but it's way harder to pack on a significant amount of muscle compared to packing on fat. And the muscles over the abdomen just can't get super big. Someone with Schwarzenneger esque pecs (seriously go look at him when he was at his peak as a bodybuilder, he dropped a lot of muscle mass when he became an actor. Those pecs where like watermelons sitting on his ribcage) might have a chest shot stop, depending on the caliber but a gut shot even then would be unlikely.
There's a story I've seen going around a few times before- I could never find a source so it probably isn't true, but you may find it interesting regardless- about Sergio oliva (another bodybuilder, similair to arnold in size) getting shot in the chest with either a 38 special or 357 magnum depending on who's telling the story and it being stopped by his pec.
Personally, My thoughts are if it happened at all it was probably a dud shot where only the primer went off, or maybe a light 38 load. No way I would believe a full power magnum would be stopped by just his pec, impressive as it may be.
Good to know that the er’s arent packed full..

What about CaseOh?.
As a person who lost 100 lbs recently I learned that my fat was protecting me quite a bit. My ribs feel so exposed now and I constantly find myself banging my hips on doors accidentally.
Yeah but would you rather have a higher risk of getting serious health problems or bang ur ribs from time to time ?

They were all hollow points except for the 577. I think you might have had some different results if you had some FMJ or hardcast etc. However if you were trying to replicate the average gun owner with people stoppers, I guess hollowpoints would be most likely carried. The bullets that mushroomed good are the ones that didn't quite cut it for penetration, that's not a bad thing as the wound would be much larger with their fat spilling out lol. Nice vid man.

Excellent video Scott! Rather interesting results. I love my 1911. Its "old & slow" but the .45ACP is an effective cartridge. The .577 was a good finishing touch!
Scott’s reactions when he shoots something are priceless. I can’t really re enact them but you all know what I’m talking about 😆 They would make for a good soundboard
I was a CT Tech at a Trauma Level I hospital. There was a code for a female gunshot victim. The Trauma Surgical Team came down all excited and waited impatiently for the scan images to come up on the monitor, but when they saw the 22LR bullet was lodged in her belly fat and didn't penetrate into her abdomen the doctors started whining and stomped away knowing they weren't going to get to cut her open. You really are something else scott. How you come up with your video ideas is beyond me, great original content really. Also i think the fat kinda functioned like a sandbag which are quite resistent to bullets hence why they were used so much in fortifications during WWII.
Pro tip, use a burlap bag before you use a plastic bag. It's less prone to blowouts, which really helps keep things together. Kinda why it's used for grain and feed storage.
Good to know there are “beef fat shooting pros” out there. Only in America! 🇺🇸
Yep. I remember reading that rice was double bagged for dropping from aircraft in Vietnam. The inner bag would often break but the looser outer bag would keep the food together.
And let's not forget what a feed bag dress did for Marilyn Monroe. Someone had apparently said one of her dresses looked like a feed bag so she had a photo shoot with her wearing a slightly modified feed bag.

This really illustrates why these dangerous game rounds even exist. Muscle, fat, and especially bone in enough thickness can render lesser rounds useless. Cool video thanks Scott.

@@VenmousReaper yup, keep it cold and it flies pretty well tho, my coworkers and I throw it at each other sometimes lol
Or when a bullet transfers all its energy into a bag of it and launches it into the air
Cold fat is remarkably not gross. Very solid and can even be crumbly.
I'm very thankful that I never have to handle it at room temp or hotter.
I would have suggested plastic buckets or something similar to contain it for these tests.
I didn't know people still made that stuff, I'd be surprised if it was legal here in Brexitstan due to health & safety.
I know they used to use the head of rushes plus tallow to make rushlights and they could if good quality make better light than candles.

My stepdad had rented a home to some relatives and at some point, the relatives had unplugged a chest type freezer in the garage to use the outlet for one reason or another and just let the freezer sit... also for about 6 months. Full of seafood. He and my mom actually tried to salvage the freezer and did a fairly good job of removing most of the stench (using lemon juice), but somehow or other, it had penetrated into the plastic walls of the freezer and some of the smell lingered for as long as they had it.

Hey, Scott, can you line up as many zombies as you possibly can and see how many it takes to stop the .577 Tyrannosaur? I am curious how big of a collateral you can achieve hahah

I never heard about extra body fat protecting the victim from a gun shot. I read about a few cases where extra body fat allegedly saved the victim from fatal knife wounds. It makes sense, a thrust/stab from a knife can 'only' go as deep as the length of the blade
I live in Denmark, so a LOT more knives than guns here
Great video as always, thank you, Scott 👍🏻
It makes sense physically, it'll slow the bullet down enough to not reach organs
Spaced armor is really effective. By having the fat away from the dummy, it may have skewed the results in favor of the dummies survival. That being said, really interesting video, and something I've been wondering this same thing for quite some time. Thank you for doing this!
I feel like here it helped more that all of the fat was concentrated on the front, as this much fat i think even 500/600 pound person doesn't have.
Also I am not sure but i think that dead fat is more resistant and it was layerd.
Like 200 pund person would have like 10% of this protection if not less.
Great video 👍
best video yet! I love the folklore tie in! You could expand on the myth busters' underwater bullet deceleration episode ...they showed that even a 50 cal. round slowed down to a stop in like three feet of horizontal water travel! that was so good! Do it with the Slow Mo Guys!!!
this episode reminds me of that same kind of round deceleration.. liquid interference.. fascinating stuff!

I figured that fat would enhance expansion, but not to this extent.

18:35 one of the best slow mo shot I ever see in your channel. The fat blowing up the dummy being pierce so fast that don't even move and the concrete block blowing up. It is a thing of beauty
It’s interesting to see that some of the hollow points fully expanded and dumped their energy, and didn’t make it.
Also, your Slap Round accident came up in my feed a few days ago and I rewatched it.
I gotta say your recovery is amazing. I know it’s been near enough 2 years, but the fact you are in rude health after the nearest-death experience I’ve ever seen… Inspiring.

I would love to see you shoot headstones. In the movies they often have shootouts in graveyards (I think the old movie Next of Kin had a scene like that but its been probably been close to 30 years since I have seen that so I am not sure). It would make an interesting video concept. Graveyard Shootout!
I'd imagine that they'd be decent cover for a shot or 2

Yes, and maybe wad cutters too? Those do well in gel.
@RepentandbelieveinJesusChrist5 uh not a good place to comment that
Next time you are shooting a "loose" target like this one, try buying a roll of contractor grade trash bags. Then after every shot, roll it off the table into a new bag to contain it. By doing this, you're not really adding material to stop the projects, and you're giving a clean surface every time to hit, so you don't confuse previous hits. Additionally, if you brought a vacuum with you, you could re-vacuum it to re-secure it into a good shape, and just seal the bags with duct tape at the top. Hope this helps! 👍

I haven't even watched the video yet, but I am here to say yes. Body fat absolutely can save your life. I got retired from my career of driving truck in 2004 when I shut down I-75 in Dayton, Ohio for half a day. I turned my head for a split second and that was the end. Ended up getting crushed in the mangled mess of what used to be the cab of my truck.
My steering wheel was bent around my midsection and my seat was bent in the same plane behind me. Had I been a skinny guy, that energy would, very likely, have destroyed organs and fractured my spine. But, my body fat absolutely saved my innards and spine. ER docs and EMTs said as much.
Only time in my life I was thankful to be fat.
