Even though Genji ultimately “defeated” Hanzo, he didnt feel like he won because he knows Hanzo’s true power.

Or better yet, hide 99% of their lore behind some sort of collectable that most players aren't going to spend the vast majority of their time hunting down just so they have a clear picture of the lore (Destiny, anyone? A thing you might not know:
    When Hanzo uses his ultimate, he yells: "Ryūu ga waga teki wo kuraū!" which is roughly translated as "Let the dragon consume my foes!", while Genji replies "Ryūjin no ken wo kūrae!" one of the meanings of which is "The dragon becomes me!". With it, the only person, that stands there is Hanzo, as Genji became the dragon, symbolizing, that Hanzo's only enemy is himself.
    Also, Hanzo has two dragons to symbolize both Genji and Hanzo as he thought that he killed his brother. Hanzo lost himself and with it, he lost the control over his dragons.

    Chris Connor! There is an explanation for you about what's happening. This story about two brothers who were born in Japanese mafia clan calls "Shimada". The old brother Hanzo (with the bow) was
    serious and
    callous man and getting ready to take the post of the father as head of the mafia. The young one Genji (with blades and shurikens) was not interested in the affairs of the mafia. He preferred to spend time on the fun. But they both were sons of the head of the mafia so they, therefore, were trained in possession of weapons. So after father's death Hanzo was chosen as a boss of the clan.
    The Hanzo was still inexperienced, and therefore the advisers managed to easily convince him that his brother posed a threat to the clan because of his indifference. During the next dispute, the brothers took up weapons and the Hanzo seriously wounded Genji (actually dismembered), after which Hanzo thought that he died and returned to the clan. Genji was found almost dead by the overwatch team and put his remains in the cybernetic body, after which he did a little work for them. Then he went on a journey around the world as he wanted to find harmony in his soul (he was tormented by the fact that he turned into a robot).
    Hanzo could not forgive himself for his deed. He left the clan and tried to atone for his guilt (including coming in family's castle every year on the day of a duel between him and his brother)
    P.S. make a video about Honor and glory(overwatch cinematic about crusaders) I think you and others will love it.

    I absolutely agree that this particular cinematic was on another level! I'm so glad to see someone else so excited about it! Definitely agree about embracing your kid side-- letting the wonder of a story pull you into another world and immersing yourself in that story, letting THEIR fears, worries, doubts, grief be YOUR own for a moment or two-- gotta keep that cathartic response up lest we lack the empathy needed to be human.
    This cinematic was brief but packed to the brim with information and emotion. From the story of the dragons, the smallest details that make themselves apparent once you figure it all out (like the chipped katana Hanzo used to "kill" Genji fading into the ripped scroll on the wall with blood splattered on it to the look of solemn grief on Hanzo's face-- SUPER brief but was a 1-2-3 punch-- or the fact that both brothers wear similar cloths on their head that flutter together in the wind when Genji holds his wakizashi to Hanzo's throat) to the minute facial expressions when things revealed themselves ("I know who you are, Hanzo"-- Hanzo's brief widening of eyes before he launches back into action, because likely the people who have been hired to hunt him down are most likely on a need-to-know basis and this man knows too much. The revelation that Hanzo wishes for death even as he fights off assassins from his former clan-- maybe also bounty hunters and former Shimada-gumi competitors and that Genji understands this even though the last time he saw Hanzo was when he was murdering him lol. The way that Hanzo can't even look Genji in the eyes when he asks him "What have you become?" Hanzo's eyes widening at the end of his "Ryū ga waga teki wo kurau" always gets me-- such a cool look on his face. Finally, his look of surprise when Genji draws his katana and summons his dragon as well). All of this-- it's fuckin *chef's kiss*. The choreography for the fights was amazing and they did a really great job of exploring the map for the game itself and also showcasing some of the moves used in-game as well.
    This was a really cool video-- I really enjoyed having this broken down. Somehow it makes it even better for me understanding the creative process behind the video. Such good work from the team responsible for creating it.

  • @LukasLLM
    @LukasLLM Před 4 lety +347

    A lot of Overwatch cinematics tie together.
    The Intro Cinematic and Are You With Us? are really necessary to watch before some of them, like Honor and Glory and Rise and Shine. Zero Hour should be the last on the list, as it is the trailer to Overwatch 2 (still in development).
    So in order it should be:
    Intro Cinematic/Are You With Us -> Alive (watched)/Hero/Dragons/Recall -> Reunion (watched)/Rise and Shine/Honor And Glory (-> The Last Bastion)/Infiltration/Shooting Star -> Zero Hour.
    Most important is the "Are You With Us?" cinematic teaser before Reunion, Rise and Shine and Honor and Glory, as it ties a lot of story together
    Edit: Few self-corrections.

    Im just gonna go into some Overwatch Lore.
    Overwatch is set in a future where omnics (Robots/AI) were being produced. The company that produced them got shut down for fraud, but that isn't too relevant. What is important is that a lot of people obviously wouldn't trust the omnics, because most people don't see AI as life. This leads to a bunch of people and omnics hating each other, which leads to the Omnic Crisis. Basically, a bunch of omnics tried to team up to murder a bunch of humans. Obviously, the humans didn't like that. This is where Overwatch comes in.
    Overwatch is an organisation that was made to combat omnic/human hate. They keep the peace, and if uprisings happen, they quell them. Overwatch consists of soldiers, doctors, engineers, etc. The best people to stop omnics were there. After the Omnic crisis settled down (The crisis is over but the problems are still there), Overwatch just became an organisation that was there to just make the world a better place.
    But crime still kept popping up, so people got mad, thought that Overwatch was the problem. Eventually the government shut them down, and now Overwatch is illegal and omnics and an organisation named Talon, who want the plunge the world in the anarchy for varying reasons, are just making everything suck. That's the gist of the plot. Now for some CHARACTER lore.
    The people you saw in this clip were the Shimada brothers, Genji and Hanzo. They were from a crime empire in Japan, and Genji was going to become the heir. He didn't really care, Hanzo got mad, stabbed him a lot and thought he died. Turns out Overwatch saved him, and they said in return for his life, he would help them do some Blackwatch stuff (Blackwatch was the undercover version of Overwatch, for things where politics got in the way). The sword that Hanzo rests at is the sword that he stabbed Genji with. He hates himself for "killing" Genji, so he abandons the sword and the empire and turns to the bow and goes for spiritual enlightment.
    From the last 2 cinematics, Widowmaker is the wife of an Overwatch agent brainwashed by Talon to become the perfect assassin. That's all you need to know, there are other details, but I won't include them.
    Tracer is a british (duh), lesbian (not so duh) that got into some time shenanigans by going to fast in a jet. A hyper intelligent space monkey (you see him in Zero Hour and Recall) saved her by making that thing she wears, which also lets her speed herself up and rewind.
    Ashe had a bad childhood, so she solved it by making her own family, called the Deadlock gang. Jessie Mccree was one of these gang members, but he got caught by Overwatch and was to either spend time in jail or help Blackwatch. Mccree chose option 2.
    I would say more, but this took way to long to write.

    • @elite5102
      @elite5102 Před 4 lety +62

      Slight Corrections , although for the most part you are correct:
      Overwatch was originally created ONLY for the Omnic Crisis, but evolved beyond that and got involved in Peace-Keeping. Overwatch was never considered a problem in the general community until a Blackwatch mission (Basically the dirty side of the organization) went south. The event Retribution has people play through the Mission (Could go more into the Mission but for the sake of my keyboard I won't).
      Due to the reveal of Blackwatch from the Mission played through in Retributions, the public opinion of Overwatch shifted from being positive, to VERY negative. They already had no real point as the Omnic Crisis had ended by the time that the Retribution's storyline plays out, and so public opinion demanded the closing of Overwatch.
      It is revealed later on, that Talon had staged a large portion of Overwatch's downfall (Although I don't remember if it is revealed how much they had a hand in Overwatch's downfall.)
      Going to this Cinematic with Hanzo and Genji, Genji was never in line for being the heir to the Shimada Clan, Hanzo was. Genji was very relaxed and flippant over his responsibilities in the clan, although it was not much to begin with, and so the clan's elders and higher ups wished for him to be taught a lesson by Hanzo. It is unknown whether they wished for Hanzo to kill Genji or to just cut him down a peg. During the fight things go wrong and Genji gets horribly injured by Hanzo. Due to this, Hanzo now refuses to use a sword (the weapon he was most accustomed to using and the one he was best at using) and uses a bow instead.
      The rest is all correct in your comment. Just wanted to correct some small things, while being the Lore Nerd I am ;-;

For example Hanzo's line "Real life is not like the story our father told us, you were a fool for believing it so!" and the final shot revealing the giant painting of the two dragons from the first scene suggesting that the narrator throughout the cinematic is the father of the two brothers telling them this tale to the siblings presumably when they were younger.

    The amazing parallelism between the fable and the story between Genji and Hanzo is nicely done and balanced. The hints dropped here and there from the fable side makes you guess, and the way it is revealed in the story where it confirms your guess gives the viewer a sense of satisfaction.
    but even if one didn’t guess it, when one connects the story at the end with the fable and connects the dots, this gives a sense of closure and satisfaction.
    Overall, 10/10 for me too. :D

      I particularly LOVE how the short decides to take a more "realistic" approach to the conclussion of the story, it doesnt go with the typical good/bad with happy ending tone, but ends with a semi sour taste and grey undertone: Of course Hanzo is still conflicted about his brother being still alive and now half machine, he hates omnics and used to kinda hate his brother! (He only killed the robot at the beggining, as proof) and of course he doesnt instantly forgives him (or himself) for what happened in the past, you dont get over things like that instantly.
      They decided to separate the story from the fable and Hanzo says as much, too: "Real life is not like the stories our father told us"

    Great vid, I enjoyed your breakdown of it all. Fun fact, though it might've been mentioned already, the sword on the display is Hanzo's, he used it to kill Genji and then swore never to touch it again. It's the reason he uses a bow instead, story-wise. In game mechanics, Hanzo and Genji used to be one character with both a bow and a sword, but he was so overpowered they made him two characters with two separate ability sets instead, and came up with this story for them. Good work by all, IMO. Also, that scatter shot he uses is no longer in the game. I miss the salt.

    I’ve rewatched the Dragon Cinematic maybe over 3000 times and every time I watch it, the meaning and emotions become more real and intense. These reactions are so relatable I’m glad I’m not the only person who gets blown away by this cinematic 😂 It’s really a work of art, perhaps even a Masterpiece

      The music in this is so great. It's immediately thematic and tells its own story. I loved that they used the same thematic drums when a certain person makes his appearance in the OW2 trailer. I love call-backs like that; it ties the whole OW world together!

  • @mittenvonscrufflears7233

    Here's some information to help you better understand and love this trailer even more: When Genji says "I have accepted what I am", means that he now has a mostly cybernetic body. Sure he survived Hanzo trying to kill him but he was mutilated so badly he only had his head, half his chest, and left arm survive. The good guy organization, Overwatch, found him and made him robot organs and also kept his part of his organic body, making him the only thing on earth that was really half human and half robot. He doesn't function like a human, but he doesn't really function like a robot either. Anyway, that also makes this scene so much more powerful, Genji's story is my favorite I really recommend you check out his lore because there's more. Love your channel!!!

    1 Cool thing about this is, that on the map in the game. (This is an actual map in the game) The shurikens and the holes where the arrows went through are on the map, which in my opinion is really cool

  • @Tredenix

    One extra thing I love about the shot at 30:00 is that the trails of cloth coming from their heads refect the dragons they just summoned, with Hanzo having two and Genji with one. Just a cool little detail that I didn't notice until after probably my third time watching through the short :)
    I'd definitely suggest watching through The Last Bastion and Honour & Glory in a double-episode like the previous one, since those are the most closely-linked of all the Overwatch shorts. I'd suggest that order too, since TLB was made first and is probably better with the backstory of H&G still being somewhat mysterious.
    And while I'm here, I dunno if you'd also consider looking at game cutscenes, but some of the important ones in Xenoblade Chronicles might be fun to look at since Definite Edition just released a couple of weeks ago :D

      there is also the fact that when genji cut the arrow in half, it split into 2, forming a blue spiral with the feathers of the arrows, being a minor forshadowing to the dragon redirect
