  • The Restorative Justice practice is a big part of the Social and Emotional Learning curriculum at EB. During the 2016-2017 school year, SEEDS Community Resolution Center’s Elli Nagai-Rothe coached teachers and staff at the Preschool, Lower and Middle Schools. Watch this video to better understand what is restorative justice and how it is being implemented at EB.

My 7 year old class is out of control because the principal has forced discipline out of the school to be replaced with restorative justice in class. Now the teacher has to have 5 min conversations with kids instead of teaching and helping kids understand the material. No more time outs, no more quiet times, no more 5 minutes of recess, no more writing a sentence 10 times and no more consequences. I love the concept for resolving relationships and dealing with medium to big offences it does not work for talking in class or not doing the work in class. It’s better to wait until after class or after school is over to ask questions to understand the root of the problem not during the class time. Teachers are being strip of any ability to keep their classrooms in order. Shoreline schools in Washington is a district with 98% graduation rate (yep a broken system). I do like the talking circle but it need to complement discipline.
Asking kids to come with solutions having them be social and emotionally intelligent has always been done in good schools.

What you are describing in your son's school is not a balanced approach to restorative practices. The basic value of restorative practices is to include and give voice to those impacted the most by a decision--not including teachers in the procedures and process--and doing TO teachers/parents/students is a recipe for disaster. Forcing restorative justice is contradictory. And it is not so much about the tools used but about a paradigm shift and mindset. Teachers need to be always encouraged and empowered and need many options to keep their classrooms safe and instructional for all students.
