    One big thing about FromSoft games is that playing them makes you feel like an archaeologist, rather than a tourist. Their worlds feel dead, or dying (but in a good way).
    It's something like stumbling upon a ghost town, with no inhabitants, only their possessions and the general state of the settlement affording a glimpse into its history

    • @mushroomarmy8802
      @mushroomarmy8802 Před rokem +31

      That's one small problem I had with the world. There was nothing except soldiers who wanted you dead. No town,, villages, settlements that were just filled with people trying to get by. The only settlements there were, housed people who for some reason, like everyone else, wanted you dead. It's a little off-putting. I hear everyone say the world is immersive and alive, but it's not, it feels dead or dying. A lot of it feels like it's there literally just to kill you (metal ball spawning from thin air to kill me on the side of a cliff). It feels like you're playing a very difficult game while being read a GOT type book(aka all the ruins and lore tidbits we find). I understand the land is in ruin after the Shattering, but I'm supposed to believe all the common folk are either rumps or soldiers who want me dead?

    • @GameoftheYear-fx4mq

      And that's the excuse you souls players tell yourself to explain the empty open world with nothing to do except fight random mobs over and over for 50 hours to gain enough XP to beat a boss that you found the location through looking at a Google guide.

      @nickgreenhow5513 Před rokem +25

      @@mushroomarmy8802 I personally think that makes sense for a world like this though. I think the idea of the shattering was to be a catalyst for the many different powerhouses to take the center stage. In an increasingly hostile and dying world I feel it's more likely you will find more enemies. I personally felt it was a natural recourse for a dying world to lash out against something "guided by grace". Especially when that most of the world was spurned by it.

    The way you've mentioned silence is spot on. It's a feature of the game rather than a lack of sound. Normally with quiet games (or open worlds in general) I listen to spotify in the background, but with Elden Ring not once did I feel the need to do that - or the want to. The audio is undiluted so when there is a sound, music, or a noise, it feels meaningful rather than being drowned away in a maze of racket. I think that's the best compliment to give this game: the world is so immersive you even soak in the silence

    HUGE agree on the thing about silence. one of my favourite parts of this game's audio/visuals is how they knew when to have the soundtrack shut up and let the weight of the dialogue carry the cutscene instead of just INTENSE EPIC/SOMBRE MELODY
    also i love how this game takes the idea of "it's only as hard as you want it to be" to the level it does. the other games it's like "there's maybe 2 other bosses you could try but they're probably harder than what you're dealing with now", which kinda leads you to just slamming your head against a wall

      Personally, I enjoy bloodborne the most out of all the souls games. The aggressive combat, environment, lore, trick weapons, and especially how they were able to fit lovecraftian horror into it that felt natural and sensible.
      The gripes I have with it is that your healing items are limited, meaning you do have to farm for them if you run out, including bullets which is used in place of magic points. You also cant respect you level points.
      Elden Ring is fun though. The bosses are difficult but not impossible. The open world environment is beautiful. If certain enemies are giving you trouble, you can cheese them (poison mist only costs 12 points in faith). Ashes can help make bosses easier if you play solo like me, and sorcery can make this game a joke. You just got to be willing to put time into grinding and learn from your mistakes

    The downside is that your attacks are very slow and thus faster bosses need a very careful judgement on when exactly to attack so you don't get interrupted mid swing and comboed to death.
    However the massive weapon swings also deal incredible damage per hit and break poise quickly, meaning NOT being hit and interrupted too much is so much more rewarding, and successful guard counters are amazing.

    Just to add my 2 cents: The role of difficulty in Dark Souls games is one of the great misunderstandings of our times. Just as in Elden Ring, dying is just part of the game play loop. It shows you: This is a challenge, now find a solution. And the game always gives you the tools to do so. Getting really good at the controls is just one way, but everyone can beat Dark Souls (or Elden Ring). Dark Souls, especially Dark Souls 1 is a BIIIIG rcommendation for everyone new to the genre who likes Elden Ring.

    Newcomer here, too. I do think having maybe something that notes down info you learn about the NPCs (or just a log of the dialogue) would be very helpful. Not everyone even has paper these days, and the character clearly remembers what was said, so if you put the game down for a few days (or you meet an npc after dozens of hours in-game) you can look at that without going to the wiki (which heavily breaks immersion and is full of spoilers).

    It's been amazing for me to watch this series grow since Demon's Souls came out. That game's difficulty was tempered because you could easily leave a level and switch to four different levels and bash your head against those instead. Elden Ring has taken that concept and done it a hundred times better.

    I love the hints you can buy from merchants, for example theres a hidden merchant at the southern end of the limgrave beach under building debris, he will sell you a note that tells you that the weakness of stonedigger trolls is the head, and after that I ended up finding a stone trigger troll and one little dink to the head with an arrow staggers him (along with all the regular trolls as well), there are hints in the game if you try to find them and its pretty cool.

    I'm still exploring all the side quests, and went down the main storyline first cause I was really interested in it, but there was one side quest I did half-way before continuing: Fridge Duty

    great video, the tutorial explains most of the basic combat mechanics, I think you get a tip about the "gravestone" icon when you obtain the summoning bell. For me the real fun is using the base combat against bosses after dying and dying and eventually mastering every dodge and counter and riposte to kill them

    4:18 - I will say, I feel like this is a misconception. This area is a fairly low-level one imo, but that _specific enemy type_ is very tanky. Feels like a lot of people fight one and assume they should come back later.
