      No kidding. I worked for a cable company that preached about bump caps in attics. The story goes that a cable installer was in the attic of a Texas home. He was running new cable lines. He ended standing up in the attic, he had a nail impale himself right at the base of the skull which paralyzed him and he was unable to speak. He ended up dying in the attic due to heat stroke amoung other things.. A day went by before the homeowners thought to check on the cable installer, especially when his truck was still in front of the house and the installation was not complete.

    This is becoming more and more rare. These days they throw kids into the construction jobs that can barely hold a hammer and give them very little actual training. To make matters worse when they have a nail gun they can throw two nails a second it's a recipe for disaster. We had a rule that if in a single 2x4 you missed more than three nails with the nail gun you had to go back to the hammer for the rest of the day! It cured the problem in a hurry!

I've seen roof decking, and even the walls, be able to almost flex right off the studs when you push on them, because over half the nails wasn't hitting anything. I would say though, if you're using the ZIP system, I would keep about a couple feet of the zip tape, just for going over the holes left behind from pulling the nails, otherwise it defeats the purpose of the zip system, since there's not gonna be any underlayment going down. similar thing in electronics, it shows so much craftsmanship to folks if you take the 30s to clean flux from the board after you finish soldering & testing. shows that you give a shit about the work you do.

    Do you cross brace the roof in the states or does the plywood sort that?

    • @w.k.d.constructionllc
      @w.k.d.constructionllc  Před rokem +2

      There is some lateral bracing in the webs of the trusses per engineer manufacture. But as far as a continuous cross brace, no. The sheathing does that duty.

    When I was a residential building superintendent, if the contractor was lazy with this and we saw a bunch of nails from the inside, gonna need them to come back and fix it because the inspector isn’t passing that to move to the next step.

    I had an argument with other framers about laying out sheet. The kept telling me it wasn't necessary. I kept telling them it was best to do it especially on the first row. They wouldn't do it and of course it screw things up. Especially when you started decking on the opposite side.

    • @w.k.d.constructionllc
      @w.k.d.constructionllc  Před 11 dny

      Exactly! It will NOT work out correctly if you don’t layout every sheet & when you look up after it’s decked and see scabs everywhere… because nothing breaks correctly.

    • @yolisurich4025
      @yolisurich4025 Před 11 dny
