Have you considered using beading thread to since up the back of the embroidery? Fireline come in different sizes. From four pruned to ten pound and even the ten pound it pretty thin, and all of it is super strong. I use it for my bead embroidery. You van use a much thinner need too. I use stiffened felt with beading needles for my bead embroidery, so it should work on this.
