An interview where Leo talks about "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" on the set of "The Quick and the Dead". Plus, there's some Johnny Depp in there somewhere. :)
"I've never played a character before that had that much freedom..." As a Special Education Teacher, I really loved the way he phrased that! Its sad that most of the time people with special needs are seen as held back by their "disability". You never really stop to think of the "freedom[s]" that they truly do have. Thank you Leonardo DiCaprio for being so honest yet respectful in the way you portrayed Arnie Grape. You did a fantastic job and should have received an award for the way you embraced this amazing role!!!
He's such an amazing actor that many people actually thought Leo had a legit disability. He doesn't just play the character he becomes the character. True talent
"Mental retardation" is a diagnosis, not an insult. People tend to misuse it, but they don't just say those words "back then," that's a clinical term. It's our own fault that saying "The boy is mentally retarded" offends people. tbh, i think people that get offended are just ignorant. pay no mind
Yeah what the hell why aren't they doing another movie together! C'mon directors, try getting the two of them together again - would make a crap load of money!!
i love this film, Leo is deff one of the best actors of our time, he is so, so gifted, so is johnny but people always write them off because they are classed as pretty boys...i think they are gifted as f*ck.
I love 4:03, it's so cute. Johnny: If you see Leo, you just tell him I say hey and er, tell him his big brother's still here. That's so nice :) It's cool because they're both equally amazing actors and it's annoying how people compare them when they take very different roles but here you can see, they're both cool with each other. And lol when Leo goes 'I'm doing good Johnny! Thank you!" Really cheery and enthusiastically and loud, compared to Johnny's sort of quiet tone.
Gilbert is not much more than a kid himself but he has the responsibly of being head of the family on his shoulders. He has to be the strong one, all the time and it’s a lot. Thank you for posting these interviews with Leo and Johnny, it is a treasure. I love them both.
when he's in a bad mood it shows very strongly, but when he's smiling it's also very strong and powerful. it means to me that he has strong emotions, but he is not comfortable showing them. the way he talks about things also shows high sensitivity and depth, which means deep emotions as well.
Wow, how old was Leo in this interview, he's so mature and articulate, most teens (actors, singers) use the word "like, like," 1000 times. Beautiful leo
Leo is a gift to the acting world...to the EARTH in general! So GORGEOUS... he is so bloody talented.. i love him so much.. he's amazing.. and should have won a FEW Oscars by now!! my god....
Yes, I agree Leo deserved an Oscar for "Whats Eating Gilbert Grape" "This Boys Life" is another great movie with Leo in the lead role. I really liked this interview - thanks for posting it...
i admire how leo handled his intenrview, he's not just an excellent actor but a very good conversationalist! he just always make sense to me.. or maybe i just find him so intresting!
Wow! He has aged very well. His voice is much deeper now, as comes with age. I'm a little older than Leonardo Dicaprio, so he's still young to me. He could be my little brother. I just saw him in Shutter Island and was very impressed! I did see What's Eating Gilbert Grape years ago. It was a sad, moving film. Leo Dicaprio is an excellent actor!
Hey you people hating on Johnny saying he is boring, just because he isn't a spastic person doesn't mean he's boring. He is brilliant in every single role he plays and isn't afraid to take risks even when the media says it won't be a smart move. He doesn't care what people think, he's always true to himself and I think that's what makes him the most respectable actor in the business. His chillness is just part of his personality, don't hate on someone for who they are.
Leo is very intelligent. Especially since he was only 19 in this interview. The way he speaks and communicates shows wisdom beyond his years. He seems to have an old soul but a young heart. He is incredible.
TTrust me they deserve way more credit than you can even imagine. Those guys from Academy MPAS are just monsters in their field. Best damn cinematographers in the world.
"I'm doing good Johnny, thank you!" haha how many times does he says Endora Iowa? He should have won the oscar for this movie... LEO I LOVE YOUUUUU!!!!
I found it quite funny when the interviewer says (about Darlene) "what is she 300, 400 pounds?" and Leo's like "No she's 500!" lol. But she acts real well in the movie and I love it to bits!!!
There were two things that made me cringe in the interview. The first obviously being that Leo called his character retarted. But the other was when the interviewer asked Leonardo about the moms weight. Then when Leo tells him he goes 'whoa ok' and then kind of chuckles 😧
It wasn't normal then to be so big, and retarded wasn't a bad word then. That's what they would call people with special needs. "Special needs" Was only changed because people made "retarded" A bad word, like an insult, Later in the 2000's. This is before b
@@jude3260 yeah that's true but it was still like a bit cringy bc of the current time we live in now...also cause the interviewer's like doesnt arnie have autism and leo's like NO
Leo did awesome in this movie.. That's a seriously hard role to play without portraying that you are making fun of/ mocking them. But he did that really well
Hey, you know what's a cool thing to think about? That none of those people would have ever guessed that both actors would go on to star in some of the biggest blockbusters of the century. Johnny Depp, and Leonardo DiCaprio, here's to you.
Mental illness & mental retardation are completely different. Mental illnesses include conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, etc. Mental retardation refers to someone with an IQ below 70. Calling someone retarded is not polite, but it is still clinically correct to say that someone HAS mental retardation. "Mentally challenged" sounds better, but the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders that clinicians refer to to make diagnoses still uses "retardation."
Johnny is like gilbert, so shy. While Leo is so outgoing and loud like arnie
Saerehrys A. yeah both are great 😏
Yeah Johny is introvert, Leo is extrovert
He was so mature even at that age!
Weeeeell he was 20
No way! He looks like he's 16 xD
+Martin Genov he was 19 that time
+Rose Dawson he was 17
@@bethanyrose780 no he was was 18, going on 19 when they were filming.

He's such an amazing actor that many people actually thought Leo had a legit disability. He doesn't just play the character he becomes the character. True talent
Mentally retarded, not autistic 00:46-00:51
@@sweetlildevil7597 how else could one be retarded?

People are getting offended bcoz its been misused/overused these days. Maybe this offensive behavior will make people realize its true meaning.
YeH I was kinda shock to hear that phrase but then I remember it was a different era back then therefore there were different terminologies.
*sigh* gorgeous these two- just gorgeous *_*
"Whats eating Johnny Grape" haha lol

I finally found this interview!
lol i bet they were like "let's just let him think we're gonna cut his outtakes"
I like the way he talks. He's professional without losing his personality. He has a very hyper energetic personality.
