Driver's Eye View - Steam on the Waldviertelbahn - Litschau to Gmund (Austria)

- A number of commentators have expressed a preference for “Driver’s Eye View” versions of the trips I make without line-side and passenger views. I've posted this version of the scenic ride from Litschau to Gmund to meet their requests - feedback is always welcome.
Steam and diesel locomotives have puffed and rumbled their way between Gmünd, Groß Gerungs and Litschau for over 115 years. Apart from mountain rack railways, the narrow-gauge lines of the Waldviertel were the last bastion of regular steam operated service trains in Austria, lasting until 1996, after which they were run by ÖBB's as part of their nostalgia operation. From 1986 onward, special trains chartered by the Waldviertel narrow-gauge railway association (WSV) ran on the northern branches. These trains, along with the driver were hired from ÖBB, the rest of the train staff being supplied by the club.
The Waldviertel narrow-gauge railway association (WSV) took over the route from Alt Nagelberg to Heidenreichstein in 1992 operating the line as a museum railway using their own locomotives and rolling stock.
From the 10th January, 2001, all traffic between Litschau and Gmünd ceased after the last timber train operated to Litchau the day before. With the last scheduled passenger services to Weitra and Groß Gerungs ending with the timetable changes of the 9th June 2001, regular ÖBB narrow-gauge train operations ceased.
On 7th July 7 2001, the state of Lower Austria, represented by the regional transport organization NÖVOG, made money available to introduce tourist trains on the " Narrow ". Short term agreements allowed trains to run during the summer months, until 1st January 2012 when the "Waldviertelbahn", as the Waldviertler narrow-gauge railways are now called by the NÖVOG, began operating the lines using their own staff. Since the creation of the "Waldviertelbahn" many improvements have been implemented including the building of a smart new station to serve Gmünd.
Enjoyed it very much♥ love the driver's eye view...but also your other camera views Thanks again ♥ greetings x
Hi, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I made a number of videos during this visit some of which show both driver, passenger and lines-side views, they can be found in this playlist - czcams.com/play/PLPdTWbkwx85o3htVm8fq-LLtnNpF5gGEN.html
Cheers. Tim.
@@Timsvideochannel1 I know but because you said most of the people love the driver's eye view, i wanted to say love the other views too. Thanks ♥
very pleasant 'into the woods' journey Tim
Hi Kieth, I'm glad you enjoyed it. That's the last of my cab ride videos, until I can out and about again. I have plenty of railway video left to edit, taken mainly from the train itself or from the line-side. I also shoot a lot of travel video that I don't usually share on CZcams because it's not popular. I will put something together covering my recent trip to New Zealand to see how well it goes down. You must find yourself in a similar position at times, do I make the videos I like and hope they are successful? or do I make the videos I know will do well? CZcams is not my main income, although the money earned makes a useful contribution to my travelling. I am tempted to go back to the original reason I set this channel up, simply to share my travel experiences with like minded people. Your channel is an inspiration to me because its honest. I hope you are keeping well. Take care. Tim.
Nice, Tim. And a so gentle a stop, literally at the end of the line.:)
Hi Terry, if you get a chance, I think you'd enjoy the countryside in this part of Austria, not spectacular, just very pleasant.
Timsvideochannel1 Thanks for the tip, Tim. Last time I was there was three years ago for a brief time en route to Slovenia. Camped there years ago when the children were small. Lost a Renault Savanna back window to a load of bikes coming through it. Happy days!
@@TerryMcGearyScotland Hi Terry, its nice to have happy memories, lets hope we can start travelling again soon to create more wonderful moments to treasure. Cheers. Tim.
Very nice to see how this secondary railways look. This part of Austria is not very touristically known, but I enjoyed to explore it with your video. Keep posting and stay safe.
Hi, I was pleasantly surprised at how nice this part of Austria is, with it's pretty villages and gentle rolling countryside. I'm glad you enjoyed the ride and I look forward to returning when travel restrictions are eased.

Hello mega video 👍
Thank you :-)
17:05 I reckon it'd be a spooky ride, going through these trees late at night! Ooooooooo-ooooooooooo!
Do you think there live also many ghosts like at British bogs? For example Dog of Baskerville? :D - Heinz
@@pega17pl That was the "Hound Of The Baskervilles". But Ghosts don't "live" where they haunt, they're dead!
Hi tim,It would be a nice journey in the summer months,Are the little towers along the line for bird watchers or shooters,Stay safe cheers bob from a very cold oz.
Hi Robert, I imagine it's very pretty in summer. Those towers appear all over Central and Easter Europe. I asked what they are used for, the most common answer is that they are used for deer hunting, although some suggested they were fire lookouts. It's on the chilly side here today. Take care. Tim.
Tome cuidado e fique seguro. Tim, de longe da Inglaterra.
Well, Tim, you've really got your money's worth out of the content you've shot here. How many versions did you end up editing together? This one's probably the best, though I'm still watching(just took time out to write this).
Hi, this is the last of six videos from my trip on the Waldviertelbahn. We are off to New Zealand next.
@@Timsvideochannel1 Ah, NZ, the "Land Of The Long White Cloud"! I'll look forward with enthusiasm for what you create from that trip.
Was it the tender forwards?
"Yes" it was running tender first, this video shows the locomotive running round the train - czcams.com/video/N-Rtdl5Vs7s/video.html
When I see how widely spread apart the buildings are around thse Austran towns(more like villages), I think to myself that Covid-19 would stand a snowball's chance in hell of spreading here! Social Distancing taken to the enth degree! (27:05)
Most of Central and Eastern Europe has plenty of space, as someone who lives on an overcrowded Island, it looks tempting.
Tome cuidado, Felicidades. Tim.
