    Everytime we I polish my paperworks, I would go back here and listen to Shengwu's speech one more time. Not only the precision of his use of language, but the overwhelming power behind the words ---- like a heated wave flows through the iced land.

    Listening to Sheng Wu's speech again. It really gave us so much insight into Mr Lee's love for his grandchildren. It painted a picture of humility and frugality. It showed us the depth of discussions he must have had with the next generation of Lees that has given them such a keen mind, a developer insight & deep understanding of his true legacy at such a tender age. I would love to hear more sharings and more speeches by the two grandsons. I particularly enjoyed this speech because of the many reminders of what we truly have from Mr Lee Kuan Yew's sacrifice & how he would have us remember him.

    Good delivery from a former Best Speaker at World Universities Debate when he represented Oxford University. We can also hear evidence of his elite education at Balliol College Oxford studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE). He stayed on in Oxford to do a Master's in Economics at Keble College. Then he went on to Stanford University for his PhD. He and his younger brother Shaowu studied at Raffles Institution. He is not a government scholar unlike Li Hongyi who is a PSC Overseas Merit Scholar who studied at ACSI and MIT.

    Dear Shengwu,
    Your eulogy was well thought out, planned and delivered. Singapore’s success story would not be as it is had it not been for your grandfather. In the coming years, our present PM Lee will also have to retire and will this nation will need someone strong with the ‘iron in him’ to govern this island nation.
    Young Singaporeans like yourself, with your academic achievements and oratorical skills will be needed in the front line of international politics in the coming years ahead to face new challenges and demands. It will take a lot of self-sacrifice, courage and determination to enter politics and continue the work of your grandfather and uncle. You have the lineage and genetically will be like your uncle and grandfather. I strongly urge that you follow in their footsteps. Think about it as Singapore will need people like you to replace the present guards.

    this eulogy seems meant for the masses. doesnt make it seem like its a closed family sharing of the memory of their grandfather.

    • @cindyl9659
      @cindyl9659 Před 9 lety +8

      That's because it was meant for the masses and was only "closed" in the sense that uninvited guests couldn't attend in person. How else do you think people like you and me would be viewing this on CZcams? When you come from a political family, very few things are truly closed. Also, LKY was probably not a typical grandfather, and Shengwu was probably not a typical grandson. Like it or not, his place in politics would necessarily have impacted his grandkids, especially this one. Ironically...it is BECAUSE this eulogy is somewhat political in nature that it is probably a more authentic representation of the relationship between the two. And my guess is that that relationship was probably a LOT more intellectual, possibly a little bit political too, than the average grandfather-grandson one. If he had only chosen to share cute, fuzzy stories about him and LKY practicing baseball or watching sports together, it wouldn't capture the full scope of what he meant to him. Not that any eulogy can....
      If it sounds like it was meant for the masses, then that's a byproduct of him being authentic. And to relay what his grandfather did for Singapore IS to cherish his memory. He stated clearly, "We can no more forget him than we can forget the sky." Shengwu is a grown man, not a boy. He can do better than to remember his grandfather with family stories alone. He pondered his impact on a nation and the world, and was comfortable sharing that with anyone with internet access. What could be more honorable than that?

    I enjoyed this eulogy a lot more when I read it than when I watched him present it. He comes across as pretentious and full of those flowery statements that his yeye particularly disliked. His accent is also confusing and unnatural, a bit like Barbarella trying to put on a fake accent and failing. Listening to the way he pronounced the R in Singapore, my hair stood.

    • @stanleygogol8596
      @stanleygogol8596 Před 9 lety +22

      Oh, I strongly disagree. I seriously doubt that a funeral for someone you loved deeply would be the place to be putting on airs. His particular style and/or accent may not jive with you, but I wouldn't accuse him of being pretentious. And I don't think the eulogy was flowery. Every sentence was concise and precise - no unnecessary clutter. He made references to literature and political works that are not immediately accessible to the peanut gallery, but that's not being pretentious....or flowery. He shouldn't have to dumb himself down for anyone. It all sounded very natural to me.

    1. Do remember that our colonial master was the British and not the French.
    It was a more liberal state then while Singapore was seeking for independence. Be thankful!
    And Hey! Please study history of Vietnam.
    2. In fact, there was a lot more bloodshed in the history of running administrative meritocracy if you were to read history, especially in China. Be thankful, the truth was the plan had worked as it had the cooperation of the whole generation of Chinese educated people and other races and they had spared us from the bloodshed and it was not just due to the planner himself. In RI, is it the students who are capable and very intelligent or is it only the teacher that is capable and intelligent?
    3. Singapire's development from a third world to a developed country using administrative meritocracy is not a miracle, look at South Korea and China, they did it less than thirty years and China is fast surpassing Singapore in many areas.
