Harley Hall, Blues Lead at that time, was the last air casualty of the Vietnam conflict. His Navy F4 was hit by a SAM on the last day of the war. His airplane was last seen going into the water, but he got out and was seen running from the beach into the jungle, never to be seen again. He was the last casualty of the war. He was said to have been seen in Hanoi North Vietnam, and later in a Russian POW prison. Harley was from my hometown, and his sister has never stopped looking for him.
Was in Military Intelligence in the 80’s. Did a tour at NSA at Ft. Meade, Maryland. Nothing was done. This was approx 1986. Was classified at the time Top Secret with code word compartmentalization. Don’t care anymore, everyone should know this.

There was an air national guard base at the airport. When I was in 4th grade, F-15s were training and at some point the multiple sonic booms broke all the cafeteria windows. It happened on a regular basis but after that incident and the news coverage, they made changes and eventually moved the base.
Reminds me of when I was that age in the 70's&several F15's flew out of Barksdale B52 AirForce base&a bunch of widows were broke I dont know why are how many went supersonic but it was loud&when I was in Damneck,Va.I watched in 1997 F14's hit their afterburners over the Atlantic&it was cool to me to see.
It's worth noting that the reason he hit mach 1 was because he hit a cold air pocket over a lake. As some may not know, as the temperature decreases, so does the speed of sound.
They make the noise of wasting fossil fuels. Air Force and Navy and Marines needed a plane that didn’t guzzle fuel!! Hence, future fighter jets would give you the same fighter jet power without the guzzling. Sounds nice, but aircraft fuel is not cheap and aircraft carriers don’t need the extra weight. FYI.
I used to work on Towboats pushing barges and I loved going to Pensacola and watching the Blue Angels practice, it was like a free air show. They do some insane stuff!!!!
I was stationed there too! But by then they had gone to T-28s. The ANG F-105s flew faster than Mach 1 over the housing area regularly without breaking windows.
As a little kid in the mid 60s and early 1970s i remember F4s flying overhead. When very young they still occasionally went supersonic close enough to hear the boom. My father a young Army officer at the time claimed it was the adrenaline pumped National Guard pilots doing it. In later years he worked towards and achieved his pilots license. Guess he liked adrenaline spikes too!
I grew up in Grand Prairie, Texas about 1.5 mi. from the former Dallas Naval Air Station, aka Hensley Field. It was a training base and the F-4s did touch n goes every day. Also Chinook choppers and plenty other aircraft. This was also the location of Vought that manufactured the WWII Corsairs. After the F-4s, the F-18s came. The Clinton admin., or Congress shut the whole field down in the 90’s. As a kid I ALWAWS had fighter jets and choppers overhead. Not to mention that DFW INTL. Airport came online in about 1977(?) I used to watch The Concord fly in on wednesdays and saturdays when I was about 10-12yo.
Off topic but did you see recently the pilot in Fort Worth who was doing a vertical landing in the F-35 lighting, and had to eject from the F-35? Costly mistake.
I've always loved the Blue Angels since a young age because when I was young one flew over my house on inverted at super low level and we locked eyes. I lived directly of foothills of the mountains in Utah and he was like 200 feet making it even more amazing. It was one of the coolest moments I've ever seen!
This happened in the 1950s in Vineland New Jersey too. Local boy did a fly over, at the request of the local social club. Guy went right down Main st and blew out the windows.
The city is pronounced Ke-low-na. I have seen the F-4s at airshows before and know they are very loud jets. Seeing it break the sound barrier would have been exciting.
Blue Angels did the same at Miramar and shattered all of the glass in La Jolla. I was at UCSD and I did not hear of any broken glass. I stood next to a sliding glass door when it happened. I am grateful for tempered glass.
Polite is not timid. Controlled is keeping aggression under wraps. With experience and/or reading, you will learn a lot of history that would directly indicate that Canadians can be quite the opposite of timid. Painting everybody with the same brush is passive-aggressive and lazy. Canadians as in any Western world nation have a broad variety of traits.

I'm old enough to remember when sonic booms were a regular occurrence in the 1960s and early 70s. ( 1950s for sure but before my time)Until they were forbidden. There was even a tv commercial with primitive graphics explaining the how and why of sonic booms.
I can tell you if they did that in their home town of pensacola every one would be extatic. We line the beach for miles by 5am the day of their big show here even though we all have the show memorized from watching them practice almost daily
Grew up back then (F-4s were preeminent) dreaming of becoming a Marine jet jockey and taking that 2nd seat in the Blue Angels. What a time. I became a door gunner in the Corps, still had my fun. 🤪
The US Navy ends up apologizing for a lot of stuff and I’m sure that’s why the families and vets often don’t like taking about their experiences to civilians.
The F4 is so badass. Watching that one doing those rolls. It's not an elegant dancer of a plane. It's like a supercharged pickup truck mimicking gracefulness with sheer belligerent muscle. It's an asshole of a plane, but in the best possible way.
I remember being in the Transamerica Pyramid in San Francisco and seeing the Blue Angels flying down the street below the floor I was on. You don’t see that every day.
