- This is a video of my mare, Ariel, getting artificially inseminated last summer on June 29th 2019.
This is a video of the full procedure and it does include graphic content. I am uploading this for educational purposes.
Not all parts of the video are clear due to the angle of filming.
The vet first cleans and disinfects the vulva and surrounding anatomy Then he pulls on the shoulder-length glove and adds a sterile lubricant before opening and attaching the 40cc vial of fresh cooled semen to a tube (insemination pipette). He then inserts his hand and arm into the vagina to locate the cervix. He will then carefully insert the flexible pipette alongside his arm to insert it through the cervix and into the uterus. With his other hand he will push the syringe and empty the vial of semen into the uterus. At that point the procedure is done and he will remove everything from inside the mare.
This process is generally easy, but that depends on each mare's comfort level and temperament. Ariel did not need much sedation for this procedure, but it is general recommendation to sedate the mare for the process to calm them to make it easy and quick.
Artificial insemination is much safer and more efficient than live cover in horse breeding.

If the mare is in heat she'll probably just enjoy herself. If not then she'll kick the hell out you.

Most mares are sedated for this process as it takes longer and is a little more tedious. If a mare is a kicker they can be placed in stocks. Most broodmares can have this done unsedated and standing in an aisleway or stall door like shown in the video. When they are in heat they are usually not upset by this process.
With artifical insemination they chances of pregnancy are fairly high as you are depositing semen directly into the unterus and you will do deep horn insemination with frozen semen. Obviously pregnancy rates are affected by the fertility of both the mare and stallion as well.
@DaisyAzuras mares actually likes that as long as you are gentle with them. In this video a vet sedated her to do this. But for normal cleaning the poo away to keep infections down. They love it if they don't the ears will go back for the first warning. But 70% of the time they let you also you hit her g spot while cleaning she won't leave you alone after.

It should never be painful for the mare. If she's showing signs that it hurts you should stop right away. That's essentially a rape at that point if she's saying know and you keep going.

They too can have foal by natural mating process instead of doing AI. Its painful in human too having painful pelvic insertion of hand for checking think about animals too bcoz its also so much painful for them. Every little thing has been planned by nature humans are interupting in nature's things like they are God. Humans have to pay for all the bad deeds one day.
Its not painful for the mare at all normal human arm size is about the size of a stallions penis its actually easier on the mare than having a 1000lb stallion jumping on her back

by allowing the mare and stallion to copulate naturally, you are putting them both at risk of injury (mostly the stallion actually; mare kicks stallion, or the stallion can bite the mare etc. mating behavior in the wild is not pretty and risk-free). for people who invest significant time, money, and emotion in their horses, they want this process to go as smoothly as possible, hence the artificial insemination. as their caregivers, it is our job to keep them safe, and frankly animals, especially those with hormones and libido coursing through them, can be unpredictable and erratic. next time, before commenting on something you know nothing about, i suggest you do some research :)
