I remember being 15 and they played this at a live show after A LOT OF BEGGING from the audience, and the audience sang the childrens' part.....wow...what a memory
my specific performance was at the Warehouse Live in Houston in....2008? I think I found a video of a similar thing happening by searching live performances of the song. It was very haunting in the small intimate space of the Studio room though.
this is their encore song now, they're on tour right now in case you didn't know. But if you didn't it's probably too late lol all their shows sold out almost immediately, luckily i was able to get tickets to 2 of their shows and had never seen them before last night. It was definitely something i will never forget. I grew up listening to them and it was a must to see them if they ever got back together haha
Most underrated band of all time. Been listening to them since Blueprints for the Black Market in 2003. Blessed to finally see them live for the last time in Florida in December.
my favorite favorite favorite song makes me feel like crying sometimes especially driving on the road through virginia and west virginia forever it makes evrything better beautiful song!!!!
I wish more people knew about anberlin because there music is amazing. Wanna hear another great song? Dismantle Repair by Anberlin almost as epic as this masterpiece.
This is one of the most amazing, breathtaking, and outstanding pieces of music in recorded music history! Seriously, every note is amazing and not one second of this epic masterpiece is left to go to waste. This is musical brilliance at it's best!
A quite recent band but wow, how great are they !! Whenever I feel a bit down, I just have to listen to them and BANG !! I'm up to anything, one of my favorite band of all time !!
stuhlz This song isn't talking about God. The band said it's about a father who was a pastor who left his family, supposedly for the ministry. At this point I want to say that because their is not vocal inflection or nonverbal communication in comments like mine, I want to make sure my comment to come off as coming from a know-it-all. I only know this info from a sibling who did some digging on the subject and I'm sure you know lots that I don't I just thought you might want to know.
To all you out there that don't believe in god i pray for you. And when that day comes when you have to answer to him then you will believe. God is love and everything in this world how do you think this all came here my freinds so please believe in him because he gave his life for you. God bless you all :)
These lines give me the chills: "Widows and Orphans aren't Hard to Find" "Wish your drinking would hurry and Kill you" "We're not questioning God" and of course the best " We're no better, you'll see, Just all of us the lost causes" I'm seeing them in La Mirada tomorrow, cant wait!
More I listen to this song, better I know my soul. It's crying from joy that something this beautiful has just reached it and my soul is now free :D This is an epiphany.
I've heard allot of people saying that all Anberlin songs sounds pretty much the same, you know what I tell 'em? If it aint broken, don't fix it. Never change Anberlin, keep on rocking!
I know, right? The whole song is a massive buildup to him loosing his faith, and the last 2 minutes are him finally surrendering to God and choosing to not give in. It's chill-inducing.
I'm an atheist, and i found two songs i really liked that were interpreted by christian bands. This proves music is different than words. IT IS ABOUT THE MUSIC, because that is the real cure to everything :) Make love, not war :)
Sad that such an amazing song has so many ignorant and negative comments. I personally am not Christian, but I still appreciate the beauty of this song.
thats one of the best part about their songs, you can listen to it blindly and just enjoy the melody, or you can analyze every last word and then truly understand the meaning of the song
Feels like you’re miles from here In other towns with lesser names Where the unholy ghost doesn’t tell Mary or William exactly what they want to hear You remember the house on Ridge Road Told you and the Devil to both just leave me alone If this is salvation, I can show you the trembling You’ll just have to trust me. I’m scared [Chorus] I am the patron saint of lost causes Are we all to you just mere lost causes? Aren’t we all to you just lost [Verse 2] Tommy, you left behind Something that will mean everything right before you die What if you gained the whole world? You’ve already lost four little souls from your life Widows and orphans aren’t hard to find They’re home missing daddy who’s saving the abandoned tonight Wish your drinking would hurry and kill you Sympathy’s better than having to tell you the truth
Been listening to anberlin since I was like, 7. Gotten through the worst in my life using their music. And when I felt my most callous and numb I played this song to remind myself how to feel
I find it amusing that some of these people have nothing better to do than keep track of what arguments they are having with someone likely hundreds of miles away... Epic way to spend time! Then again, I am taking 30 seconds to write this comment. Worth it.
Anberlins music is awesome, there testimony, motivation, and the adversity they face is what makes them, as people, truly unique. Read there testimony, and the meaning of the song. The song is meant to be a message to the christian community that there music is a testimony of there relationship with God, and there faith in God, though it does not conform to all "traditional" christian ideas of outreach to non christians. There focus is to show the loving nature of christianity.
guys come on, just listen to the song, anberlin's music is incredible, and your argument is pointless because neither of you will convince the other person. if you want to argue send messages to each or something. just listen to the music, it's uplifting beyond words.
Jesus told us to spread his word throughout the world. Jesus did the same thing we are doing. So when you say we are wrong, your at the same time saying that Jesus had no idea what he was doing.
While listening to this song, I looked up who the patron saint of lost causes was and I found out that it's St. Jude. I flipped out when I found this out because I volunteer for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a charity hospital that treats children with catastrophic diseases. I never knew what St. Jude was the patron saint for, and I just thought this was a crazy cool coincidence because I love Anberlin :]
"WE are NOT questioning GOD, just those he chose to carry on his course" no on ever is, but we all wonder about those that were chosen. never heard words more true
@maxoutmusic it was just pure amazement, high energy, both my shoes were ripped apart by the end of the show, and they played Ready Fuels last! It was so cool, the college crowd was awesome, they never stopped moving, and they played a perfect set, opening with godspeed and all, nothing is better than a good band and a good crowd, and thats what we got =)
One of the most beautiful and breathtaking songs I have EVER heard. Kudos to Anberlin for producing such a remarkable masterpiece.
Very good song.
I remember being 15 and they played this at a live show after A LOT OF BEGGING from the audience, and the audience sang the childrens' part.....wow...what a memory
They were closing with this on their last tour, such a great night
please tell me there is a video of that somewhere
my specific performance was at the Warehouse Live in Houston in....2008? I think I found a video of a similar thing happening by searching live performances of the song. It was very haunting in the small intimate space of the Studio room though.

Lucky you...
Most underrated band of all time.
Been listening to them since Blueprints for the Black Market in 2003. Blessed to finally see them live for the last time in Florida in December.
This song live is AMAZING.
I can still remember the power in Stephen's voice belting it out. Whoooaaaa.
You know, this song should've been released as a single. It's really one of the best songs in recorded history!
I'm going to miss Anberlin so much! I'd get down on my knees and beg them to stay together, but it's a lost cause.
Punpunpunpunpunpunpunppunpunpunpunpunpunpunpunpunpunpunpunpun

Aren’t you glad they’re back together 😀
my favorite favorite favorite song

beautiful song!!!!
My absolute favorite part is when the kid choir comes in. It sounds amazing with the heavy guitars and drums.
I really need to stop falling in love with bands that aren't together anymore.
Just give it a couple years. You can see them again.
No problem, there are a ton of great artists that are dead, not together is hardly a barrier.
Surprise
they announced a album for this suffering..
New album and touring right now...
2019 and still listening 😊

Out of all rock music Christian heavy whatever ain't nothing beat the kid opera choir at the end. so amazing!
Yes I get that you're the patron saint of lost causes. But I still love you

I'm glad that there are still people out there that have a strong faith in Jesus Christ. Thank you, and I'm praying with you for all of these people.
Banging montage music
Guitar Heroooooooo 😢😭
These lines give me the chills:
"Widows and Orphans aren't Hard to Find"
"Wish your drinking would hurry and Kill you"
"We're not questioning God" and of course the best " We're no better, you'll see, Just all of us the lost causes"
I'm seeing them in La Mirada tomorrow, cant wait!
I love to stare out the window on a rainy day and listen to this....
More I listen to this song, better I know my soul. It's crying from joy that something this beautiful has just reached it and my soul is now free :D
This is an epiphany.
OMG. Anberlin is my FAVORITE BAND EVER.
i can't stop listening to this song
i could spend the rest of my life listening to this song. 3:43 best part in history of music
Loosing?
This is one of the best songs they have!
anberlin never fails. never.
Just beautiful.
this song is rather somber...awesome! dance dance christa paffgen brought me here, another personal favorite of mine
duality is easily the greatest montage of all time, cod4, cod5, h2, any game
this isn't a song, this is an anthem!
this song is amazing
I'm an atheist, and i found two songs i really liked that were interpreted by christian bands. This proves music is different than words. IT IS ABOUT THE MUSIC, because that is the real cure to everything :)
Make love, not war :)
Thank you for posting that! I always said his lyrics are like modern psalms, and this proves it!
2 years later and still listening to this song.....
I love the way this song's rythm increases in speed slowly.
Anberlin together with Dredg are for me the best alternative rock bands. It's so a pity that they're not playing anymore. They put poetry in music
So True !
Feels like you’re miles from here
In other towns with lesser names
Where the unholy ghost doesn’t tell
Mary or William exactly what they want to hear
You remember the house on Ridge Road
Told you and the Devil to both just leave me alone
If this is salvation, I can show you the trembling
You’ll just have to trust me. I’m scared
[Chorus]
I am the patron saint of lost causes
Are we all to you just mere lost causes?
Aren’t we all to you just lost
[Verse 2]
Tommy, you left behind
Something that will mean everything right before you die
What if you gained the whole world?
You’ve already lost four little souls from your life
Widows and orphans aren’t hard to find
They’re home missing daddy who’s saving the abandoned tonight
Wish your drinking would hurry and kill you
Sympathy’s better than having to tell you the truth
Been listening to anberlin since I was like, 7. Gotten through the worst in my life using their music. And when I felt my most callous and numb I played this song to remind myself how to feel
I feel privileged to have found this hidden gem, it never loses its magic.
this music remebers me that you need to live simple so others can live simple
Honestly, this is my favourite song of all time..
2021 and still fire 🔥
Best song of Anberlin
anberlin is so freakin amazing!!!
The choir is my favorite part.
the part from 3:15 - the "choir" made me get goosebumps, just cant stop listening to this song now when i first found it :)
Anberlin's masterpiece song on their masterpiece album
This isn't a song... This is a ballad. Truly incredible.
this gives me so many shivers...
4:30-4:42 is just awesome. I love his voice there
Greatest song of all times and not even a million views! A shame, a true shame
god this song gives me goosebumps
"Patron Saint, are we all lost like you?"
Heh, weird but catchy sentence
OMG I love this song so much!
"we're not questioning god, just those he chose to carry on his cross"
of being judgemental, as if they were gods not mortal ... We are called to love alone...everything in the service of Love.
I find it amusing that some of these people have nothing better to do than keep track of what arguments they are having with someone likely hundreds of miles away...
Epic way to spend time! Then again, I am taking 30 seconds to write this comment.
Worth it.
This is maybe the greatest song ever written...seriously it's up there
"We're not questioning God, just those he chose to carry on His cross." One of the most powerful lines I've ever heard in a song.
Absolutely beautiful.
The best part of the song is that last line you mentioned. I love the buildup into the distorted guitar, just great.
Greatest song of all-time!
A simply amazing song. A wonderful message too.
eRa Prisma + Muzik!
I co-founded that clan, really happy to see how far they're going
guys come on, just listen to the song, anberlin's music is incredible, and your argument is pointless because neither of you will convince the other person. if you want to argue send messages to each or something. just listen to the music, it's uplifting beyond words.
I got no words to describe this song... wonderful.
This song is EPIC, so much that, no comment could ever possibly capture how epic it is...
this song deserves 10 times the views it has
6 minutes of genius pure genius
This song is perfection
Are you still alive?
Jesus told us to spread his word throughout the world. Jesus did the same thing we are doing. So when you say we are wrong, your at the same time saying that Jesus had no idea what he was doing.
While listening to this song, I looked up who the patron saint of lost causes was and I found out that it's St. Jude. I never knew what St. Jude was the patron saint for, and I just thought this was a crazy cool coincidence because I love Anberlin :]
I found this song because of a Halo 3 montage called Dualtality. It's a fantastic montage with fantastic songs.
Seriously.
"WE are NOT questioning GOD, just those he chose to carry on his course"
no on ever is, but we all wonder about those that were chosen.
never heard words more true
@maxoutmusic
it was just pure amazement, high energy, both my shoes were ripped apart by the end of the show, and they played Ready Fuels last!
