Bad Habits | A Monk's Perspective

- One of the issues that people face is that when they fall back on old habits, they will beat themselves up. In this video, I wanted to give you a perspective that may help you to continue to improve on your path, and that perspective is to know that you are still making progress. Take the lesson from that experience and continue to refine yourself. The growth path is not linear, but more of a deepening process. It takes time so be very gentle and kind with yourself. I hope this helps. #monks #buddhism #mentalhealth

What habits are you currently working on improving?
Thank you so much for this video i needed this so much right now as I got a new job and studying at university and got too busy.. i didnt make time to meditate and follow my practise in Buddhism. These things then affected my mental health as I hit burnout and broke down, then beat myself up for not being able to manage. When actually I hadn't taken time for myself. So mine is working on time for myself so I don't burnout and keeping up with my practises.
Setting a bedtime and waking early
@@kageshadowfairy thank you for sharing. I think many people will be able to relate to this. Just gentle notice it and get back on again. You got this đ
Over explaining myself. I have a lot of anxiety around being misunderstood but I have realized that most people who aren't intending to listen won't so I just...say nothing. It's really hard though.
Mindfullness and meditation
I can definitely relate to this. My bad habit is over promising then getting stressed out because I took on too much. I have to remember that I am not Superman.
Oh yes. That is quite relatable for sure đ
One of the biggest lessons I've learnt from following your channel and applying your teachings is how to Truly and Sincerely Love Myself. I appreciate this a lot because I wasn't taught how to love myself. I thought punishing myself after making a mistake was Loving Myself. I am so happy and grateful now that I know how to Joyously look at my mistake, observe, make changes and keep it moving because I am still on my path, I am advancing, moving forward and growing
Thank you for this Kind and Loving Reminder. Thank you for believing in Us

I had really bad substance abuse issues when I was very young. I went to a 12 step based in patient rehab twice once when I was 18 and again when I was 21. The second time was the most beneficial to understanding myself and why I chose mind alteration as my #1 priority. Iâm 27 now and donât have children but other responsibilities. I have fallen back into the behavior of someone who is abusing substances but with no substances involved. I am aware what my natural reactions and bad habits are. I hope to utilize the tools and help that is available to become disciplined in mindfulness because I know it is the key to a balanced life
Thank you again Venerable Nick! Always cheering us on!! I am so grateful to you!! (Nancy)
You are so welcome! Thank you so much Nancy đđ
This channel is amazing. Whenever I find myself troubled or I meet myself with the feelings of resistance, I come here and I realize I will always be the student and in this space, I can forgive, progress and love. Thank you! â€â€
Thank you and blessings from Pennsylvania. I am working on compassion towards someone who irritates my every cell. Also focusing less on money troubles. You are so helpful Venerable Nick.

I have a habit of isolating myself whenever I feel stressed and overwhelmed, where I only have the energy to do the bare minimum (especially in the winter months). I'm hoping I could change that but I don't know where to begin!
I figure I have to practice quitting. Diet coke. I have a lot of respiratory allergies, and it clears the gunk out of my throat. That stuff is bad for you. I have to give it up. Slow going, but I am drinking less of it. Going to bed at a decent time. So easy to just stay up late, sleep late when you're retired. Discipline is easy to let go. I have to practice getting my act together again.
Yes just take it one step at a time đ
Your set an intention âșïž that's already a big step†little by little you will meet your goal. Be proud that you got aware of what you need to change, many cannot even do that. Lots of success on your own journey â€

Thank you venerable nick!
The essence is really be kind, be neutral & observe the problem like a scientist and fix it with a clean calm heart that is not plagued with thoughts or emotions that isnât helpful.
These are profound wisdom that can be challenging to master immediately for a layman. I am really glad and thankful that you do so many videos to explain this through different angle and lenses to help us along our journey.
Wow beautiful Cecilia! You hit it on the head. Well done!!!
Quit smoking 5 months in now! Thanks Nick
Oh wow! Congratulations Emily! Thatâs a very big deal. Keep it up đ
I've broken almost all of my addictions but two. All I have left to break are my addictions to weed and the cigarillos I roll with. I'm cutting back 10% a week starting today. A big problem of mine though is having patience when people are making choices that hurt themselves. I spent years involved in criminal activities, opiates, and really bad behaviors. Now that I've grown, I can't handle people's mistakes. My partner has a difficult time talking to me about her friends because I think they're making a lot of bad choices and don't have enough self respect. My lack of patience and compassion stems from a fear that people won't learn and I can't help them. As a result, I'm helping no one because I avoid them. Trying really hard to be aware of that and do better. Thank you for another banger, Venerable Nick.
I know I commented on pinned post but I also wanted to add this. Thank you nick you have helped me so much with your videos and great wisdom. So many thanks and blessings to you also đ

Good morning venerable & all.. Currently working on not speaking unless required. Being in profession of psychology, counselling & therapist, I have to speak a lot.. But now I am withdrawing my excess speech & talking only to the point.. I was on tour on Buddhist places in India such as bodhgaya, sarnath, rajgrih, kusinara, jetwan, veluvan, lumbini etc.. Returned this week... Sharing my merits with all of you... Stay blessed & with lots of Metta
Thank you! †That was really helpful đ

Thanks for your sharing wisdom brother đđđ
Thank-you for your videos.
Hello Ven. Nick
Thank you for this video đ
When you discussed lashing out at work....I was like, "Did he see me the last 2 weeks!??" đ
This happened to me twice. I had not experienced these outbursts in such a long time.
Yes. I felt awful, was full of self loathing and was embarrassed.
After taking a step back, I wrote in my journal, read, meditated, and did breathing techniques. The next day, I realized exactly what you have explained here.
Although I had these outbursts, I continue to progress on my self discovery journey; and the way for me to improve is when these things happen so that I can see, learn, understand and move forward.
At this point in my life, I spend most of my time alone. Theoretically I learn, however practically I don't get the chance to put these lessons to work.
Just like driving a car. We can take drivers education classes... however we need to sit in a car and drive for the theoretical part to kick in.
I am a wonderfully made creation. I am arriving at the blueprint of my soul, one step at a time. Learning that love and compassion towards myself is essential đ
Thank you so much for sharing my friend. I think many people can relate to your story. Just keep improving each day đ
@@nickkeomahavong01 Thank you Ven. Nick

Venerable Nick, need your guidance and enlightenment on how to overcome the fear and anxiety attack when presenting or talk to a group of people. I have been paralyzed by this for the longest time and it is something that I need to do frequently in my work. Please help as I am at a loss of how to manage this stress and I also dun want to quit my job. đ

Hi ven Nick nice to hear from you from California when are you coming s.florida. Why do really bad things happen to good people. Is it our past evil actions
đ
đđ
I know what I need to do for my wellness. I want to build good habits for my mental health. Iam always watch and plan to practice such useful tools, but most of the time I can't put it into action.
Most of the time l feel nothing and like empty, feel like criticise /judge my thoughts too. Mainly l cant do want l want to do, and can't deal or observe my thoughts. Most of the time l feel like
blank and stress of doing anything.
Actually l dont know how to describe this state but l want to change it
Do you have any suggestions, Nick?
I still don't understand how I can dive deep into my anger and understand it and where it comes from and what's to be done.
I guess one of my worst habits is to become angry of myself whenever I get angry of other people (if that makes any sense)! And I really want to understand and solve this anger, but I still haven't figured out where to start from, what questions I can ask myself and reflect on to unfold this destructive emotion layer by layer till I reach its root and cure it from there.

Bro Nick what are your thoughts on the current scandal the Dalai Lama is involved in?
đ§Ąđ§Ąđ§Ąđ§Ąđ§Ąđ§Ąđ§Ąđ§Ąđ§Ąđ§Ą
What did you mean by we change our perspective,we learn wisdom ,what is Buddhist wisdom and change of perspective in this case?
But why are bad habits so easy to develop and so hard to shake? Why is doing the right thing so difficult? It seems against our nature. The constant fight is tiring.
The US government is killing me by intentionally denying me medical care because I'm a targeted individual. They killed my mom, my dog and now they are killing me. Thank you for these videos the help.
