I can't believe it's been 40 years. These albums sound even better today. Metal never dies.
Truer words never spoken.
Martin said 30 yeas ago, so…
Absolutely it was stained class as the best metal album of 78 I agree 100%.
Stained Class is one of the greatest pieces of music of the 20th Century. An unparalleled masterpiece that was 80's metal, long before 80's metal reared its head.
I came across a Gary Holt (Exodus) interview the other day, he said the considers Stained Class along w Master of Puppets the ultimate metal albums
UFO's "Obsession" is a very underrated album that was released that year.
Really pleased to see that Stained Class got 1st Place. "Stone Cold Classic" absolutely.
JUDAS PRIEST are the metal Gods for a reason. Put on some serious headphones or earbuds and really listen to these records from the inside out. Take in the nuances. Climb into the studio with the guys and really get a feel for the passion being laid down on these tracks. Make sure your listening to the vinyl copy of these records, not some compressed digital shit. MP3’s suck.
0:20 - It’s hilarious but I also think of the 70s as “thirty years ago” and the 80s as “ twenty years ago”. My mind perpetually thinks it’s the year 2000.
Same here. It's called "getting old", my friend.
Stained Class is and has always been far and away my favorite Priest album. I first listened to it when I became serious with playing the drums...it blew my fucking mind!
Anthiny Staffen - Mine, too, brother!!
Les Binks tears up the kit on that album, shame he left soon after.
The intro to Exciter is enough to blow a drummers mind
Nice profile pic
Mate 1978 was 40 years ago, not 30.
When you get old the years roll by my man...
wow I'm glad you beat me to it
getting old fucking sucks assssss
I thought he said 30 too ha ha, or is that just he's Canadian accent
Nah he absolutely says 30. :D
Shhhh...I was born in 78 so he just knocked 10 years off my age! 🤣
i clicked on this, thinking Killing Machine would beat out Stained Class...so happy to see SC in the number one spot. Best Priest album of all time.
The Priest reign supreme!!!!! I'm happy :)
FIREPOWAHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Two Priest Albums... Whoop whoop.
Long live Priest!
Oh man, you should read the book he wrote on Priest...
GUYS! So we're bad a math, OK? :-)
BANGERTV - All Metal But he said punk was pretty much over?? Nooo The Ramones started in 74 Sex Pistols 75 Black Flag 76 The Damned 76 The Dead Boys 77 The Misfits 77 Bad Brains(HARDCORE) 77 The Descendents 77 Discharge 77 Dead Kennedy's 78 ect. ect. So no punk was definitely not over
No, that guy tends to feel 10 yrs younger, simply.:)))
And spelling? "Judas Preist"?
Punk is kinda over in 1978!? GBH, Dead Kennedys, Angry Ramones, D.O.A. and The Plasmatics formed in that year and killer records like Deadboys‘ „We have come for your children“, Germ‘s „Lexicon Devil“ ep, Ramones‘ „Road to Ruin“, Vibrators‘ „Pure Mania“, Dickies‘ „The incredible shrinking Dickies“ and the first Avengers long player came out …
Obviously he's talking about the bands belonging to the very first wave, their aesthetics/music style and their initial momentum. Bands like Dead Kennedys or The Germs belong to the next chapter.
VodkaViolator Punk stopped being mainstream and came back later
My thoughts, too. Misfits and Black Flag both had albums out in '77 and they were far from over by '78. That's just two bands off the top of my head.
But they only gained momentum and recognition later on right? that's how i see it.
Buzzcocks released 2 good albums in 78
AC/DC's Powerage was really good and also their magnificent live release "If You Want Blood You've Got It" (recorded at the legendary Glasgow Apollo Theatre).
But are they sound Hard Rock no Heavy Metal
This would be my favourite for the year. I felt that Van Halen was amazing but didn’t have the emotional musicality of Angus. Also Bon was clearly special. But I was surprised not to see any Motörhead on the list. They were very loud and heavy
@@retrolu5872 They used to be heavy metal, as were many bands. They are now classed as hard rock (whatever that is).
Amazing stuff thank you BangerTV. I'm going to revisit all these albums
First Guitar hero since Jimi Hendrix. You just broke Jimmy Page's heart
Heavy Metal Heretic and the guy that create tapping
JIMI Hendrix*
Blackmore will burn this guy
Heavy Metal Heretic what about Blackmore?
Doug Arnold - Michael Schenker, anyone?
Great pics! I love all of these albums
Man, this guy has a lot of charisma. I believe every word he’s saying. You know your music and you keep it humble. Great video.
If anyone is The Man in rock and metal journalism, it’s Martin Popoff. The dude should be knighted by Tony Iommi.
What a great year, Rush and Priest in their prime. Thanks for the recommendations looking forward to checking them out.
Killing Machine (HFL) is my favorite Judas Priest album too-glad to see it on the list. Thanks Martin!
Good job, Mr Popoff. I only would disagree about Eddie Van Halen being the first "guitar hero" since Hendrix. Blackmore, Tommy Bolin, Page, Rory Gallagher, Alvin Lee, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, Santana, Frank Zappa and others ... I'm not comparing styles, virtuosity, innovation, etc., but just thinking that for the collective imagination/beliefs during the seventies, all of them were "guitar heros".
"and others ... " Schenker included. I must confess that he's not among my favorites, but that's another matter.
I think he's right with Eddie Van Halen. When you say guitar hero you refer to a guitarist whose individual presence is enough to carry the lights. You can't think of Blackmore without Rainbow/Deep Purple, Page without Led Zeppelin, Gilmour without Pink Floyd. But you get Eddie Van Halen and most people think first about him than about the band Van Halen. And the other ones you mention like Beck or Santana are great famous guitar players but are not heavy metal guitar heroes aesthetically speaking, specially Santana. I hope you get my point.
worgegramsci105
I get your point. Based on the definition of "guitar hero" that you give, I would pretty much agree.
Eddie invented tapping, the most overused guitar playing technique played by guitar players to this day
Christopher Santana Eddie didn't invent tapping. Maybe he was not aware of others using that technique prior to him, so discovering by himself something already existing. Anyway, it's true that Eddie is the player who made tapping popular.
Thanks for the Ram Jam suggestion Martin!
Judas Priest > Everyone else
mjg1312 damn right
1st guitar hero since Hendrix ? Did you forget that they were calling Michael Schenker God ?
No love for UFO's Obsession?
Here ! Here ! Many of us suggested it, but, well, there was only room for 5.
Hell yeah!! Best record released in ‘79, IMO. Not even a contest!! Good call, Shadoestar!!
Yes. Just not enough.
I suggested Obssesion, then I saw your post. Even better than Lights Out. IMO. All Schenker all the time
Nice one Martin. Enjoyed!
Thanks for your wisdom kind sir.
EXCELLENT CHANNEL !!!
Stained Class !
Bought it the day it was released
Never thought that Dictators get mentioned on this channel. Love The Saints too. Great job!
Rainbow - Long Live Rock N Roll still my favourite Rainbow album! great episode thanks Martin!
Stained Class is just a perfect album... Definitely my favorite Priest album and in my top 5 of greatest albums of all time.... Saints in Hell... Beyond the Realms of Death... Exciter... every track is classic metal at its best... \m/\m/\m/\m/\m/
Crass released their first album in 1978 so I’d say that punk was far from over my friend. It was on its second wave.
Good list in retrospect.
Being there, 1# Frank Marino & Mahogany Rush Live
Impeckable Budgie, No mean city Nazareth,Never say die Black Sabbath,Powerage AC/DC,Obsession UFO,,The Tokyo tapes the scorpions etc etc mighty year for great albums, But yeah I think 5 mentioned are worthy of their places.
am I the only one who loves never say Die?
I like it a lot, despite of the Holy Scriptures of the seasoned critics stating that it "must" be hated. It's true that it was disappointing at the time of its release, but now we can listen to it free of expectations, and not as the awaited follow up to Sabotage (which had been already not so well received as the first 5 albums). If people just listened to it instead of going with the flow ... Ok, many people don't like it and they have the right to, but I'm afraid that others just read/heard about it and just repeat the negative assessment like parrots.
Most of us are able to recognize that the last two albums of the first Black Sabbath's era were not as good as the previous six. But, again, it has nothing to do with loving an album or not. I can JUST LISTEN to Never Say Die and enjoy it. The comparison with anything else is a different matter.
MaTaFiX Yes...
Pete Canthropus - You hit the nail on the head, Pete!
I love it. The only Ozzy era Sabbath I dislike is Technical Ecstasy
martin you killed me with the comment “that good they named it twice”😂that’s gold👍🏻stained class number☝🏻all day every day🤘🏻
JUDAS PRIEST - STAINED CLASS
UFO Obssesion shreds them all. There's a reason that only Schenker is shown on the cover. Better than VH 1st album
How did you like UFO's Obsession? I'm surprised that album didn't get mentioned.
Because of your suggestion I went out and found RamJam's "Portrait" album. WOW! KILLER! I don't know how I missed it when it first came out. Black Betty is a classic tune. BUT, this album is amazing. Thanks for the suggestion. I just hate I've missed all these years of listening to this..
Glad you mentioned The Dictators. Ross The Boss guitar work really shines
About goddamn time this came out.
Nice list, and once again totally on board with your personal also-to-be -considered albums. Bloodbrothers is a freaking great record, and NEver Say Die is one of my most listened to Sabbath albums. I love that album so much. It should be on the list I think , though like some other selections (Rush for instance) it is not just heavy metal but a lot of other things too. That album just gets a bad and unfair rap, as does Technical Ecstacy, though for different reasons. Budgie Impeckable would be a good addition too.
Rush and Rainbow on the Top 5, I'm good - the 2 bands and albums I still listen to on a regular basis and are still my faves among many new bands they inspired in Prog Metal (The precursors & Grandfathers) and Metal subgenres. I'm happy with the Top 5, The Priest were the epitome of HEAVY for its time.
Eddie Van Halen changed Guitar forever and his legacy runs through every sinew of Metal and Guitar Shredder to come. Even Eddie has praised Ritchie Blackmore in what he's contributed to Guitar and Hard Rock/Metal music. There may have been other guitarists to come during or before Blackmore, but Eddie was something new, wild and exciting and coming in at the right place, right time when every wannabe musician I knew (including me) wanted to be a guitarist that played like that, though at the time, I really wanted to play like Blackmore, with a bit of Van Halen thrown in . . . . then Randy Rhodes came along and presented the "darker" sound, but that's for another list ;).
Went to my first gig in 78,Judas Priest Killing Machine tour at Lancaster University.
Aerosmith - Live Bootleg, you seem to have forgotten. Hemispheres, Powerage spun relentlessly.
Live recordings were not allowed by the rules Popoff established when addressing people to vote. Besides that, the recordings on that album are not all from 1978.
I'd switch the top two personally, just because even though I love Judas Priest, the first few Van Halen albums were that much more influential to me personally and to the heavy metal/hard rock guitar culture in general, and honestly, Van Halen 1 was and still is mind-blowing!
UFO, Angel, Black Sabbath, Rainbow, Judas Priest, Van Halen
1978 was the year I turned 22 and first saw Judas Priest live. Bought and loved all these albums. Stained Class definitely a masterpiece and #1 in my book, one of the greatest metal records of all time. AC/DC was pretty obscure at that time, but rising fast. Only 4/5 skulls for Rainbow with Blackmore, Dio and Powell?
The Saints and The Dictators!!!! Fantastic albums!
Hehe, always full of surprises these best of (random year) x'))
All these albums are awesome classics! Stained Class is for sure one of the ten best metal albums of all times!
Just one thing:
Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow is "weak"??? Seriously? The album with Temple Of The King, Catch The Rainbow, Sixteen Century Greensleeves, Man On The Silver Mountain, and so on...??? C'mon...
7:38 Yeah we all remember the classic band Judas Preist (not to be confused with Judas Priest).
With great songs like Electric Yee, Pian Killer and Braeking the Lawn.
Rob Halcastle did a great job on vocals.
Please review Saxon - Thunderbolt
Agreed!
hey buddy they review albums labels (or PR's) send to them, and the list (believe me) is infinite.
Ah yes, the year of my birth. Thanks for the reminder of how old i am. No, no, kidding. Excellent list, only one i haven't heard is the Rainbow album. Something i must correct very soon. Very much liking these year by year top 5's.
HA. Was listening to "Portrait" last night at work. Blew some minds!
Didn't JUDAS PRIEST stained class come out a few years before hell bent for leather?
Now I want to check out that ram jam album
I thought 1988 was next? When's Lock Horns coming back? Thanks.
That PRIEST record (Hell Bent For Leather) is often overlooked, and like you is my personal favorite of theirs. I remember practically every metal band on Long Island endlessly covering tracks off of this to the point where some people got sick of JP!
Absolutely great list. Perhaps AC/DC - Powerage and The Dictators - Bloodbrothers (there's a lot of metal in their punk). However I expected Stained Class to be #1. \,,/
What an awesome year!!🤘
Hemispheres is awesome prog rock (pre-metal), being my 2nd favorite Rush album, after 2112.
Hell Bent for Leather is also one of my faves, and memorable to me, but not as much as Sin After Sin & Stained Class.
As for honorable mentions, *I love* Ace Frehley's solo album that year -- Ozone, Rip It Out, Snowblind, etc. Good choices.
Oh ... and that "Beyond the Realms of Death" court case.........
Will have to check out the Ram Jam
Two of my favourite purchases of 1978, besides the ones you've mentioned, were Ted Nugent's Double Live Gonzo and Pieces Of Eight by Styx.
I definitely prefer Killing Machine over Stained Class, but I do love Exciter and Heroes End...
Where do i vote on martin popoffs UPDATED top 500 songs?
Stained Class was also the first album to debut Priest’s iconic logo!
Damn friggin right Stained Class was #1!!!!! Blows the doors off Hell Bent!!!
Stained Class is The Greatest JP Album of all time. And also the Very First Heavy Metal Record Ever!!!!! From the Exiter beginning to Heros End this is a Dark Masterpiece Way ahead of it's time with an Incredible Production crew and all the songs are Great. All killer No filler. Love, Love, Love this Record!!!!!!!!
Ok, my top 5 heavy albums of '78
1. Rush - Hemispheres (my fav. Rush album)
2. Judas Priest - Killing Machine (my fav. Judas album)
3. Judas Priest - Stained Class
4. Alice Cooper - From the Inside
5. AC/DC - Powerage.
Finally I read a comment saying Killing Machine is a better album than Stained Class. After scrolling through Stained Class is the best album of all time. Thank you. I thought I was alone.
No Thin Lizzy 😔
1. Van Halen - Van Halen
2. Rainbow - Long Live Rock N’ Roll
3. AC/DC - Powerage
4. Judas Priest - Stained Class
5. Rush - Hemispheres
UFO "Obsession" Maybe not heavy metal, but with Schenker on lead, it was fine by me.
UFO's Obsession deserves at least a honorable mention imo
Great year! I'm happy to have been born the year Judas Priest released two killer albums!
I would never call Van Halen metal but i agree with you completely with killing machine, probably my most listened to priest album, flawless, my first copy never had green manalishi on it,i love that song
Remember that year vividly. Lots of good rock.
U F O strangers in the night live album ....arguably the greatest live album ever recorded!!!!!!!
Scott Sherman that's a good one. Hahaha
Quit listening to Eddie Trunk 🙄 lol nahh it is a great live album, but UNLEASHED IN THE EAST is the best live album ever.
Scott Thompson My personal favorite is Jethro Tull- Bursting Out
Oh it is the greatest Live Album
Agree with most of what you said, esp re Killing Machine. But Eddie VH first guitar hero since Hendrix? Come on - Page, Blackmore, Iommi, Young, Schenker ...
Not surprised that tje Priest that is the beast is honored here twice with my favorite 70s era Priest album Stained Class as numero uno!🤘👹🤘
shout out to the Nuge's "Double Live Gonzo" and Lizzy's "Live and Dangerous"
🤘wow great discs Powerage, Stained class awesome disc🤘
You guys misspelled "Judas Priest" on the "Stained Class" entry.
Steve Hackett was tapping long before Eddie Van Halen. That said, Eddie is a phenomenal guitarist.
I would say Ritchie Blackmore is a candidate for guitar hero after Hendrix predating Van Halen.
Yeah, good choices...Stained Class is brilliant, best Priest album, iMHO, and they made lots of good ones!
Hemiphere, long live, killing machine, van halen, stained class awesome old school
Powerage was better than half of these. Good review as always. I'm just a fanboy lol
John Landis powerage is definitely better than van Halen van Halen and arguably better than a lot of rainbow and Judas priest albums. But that's just one man's opinion. I thought powerage wasn't quite as good as let there be rock but still a good solid album.
John Landis well you know what they say about assuming. It makes a ass out of you and me.
John Landis also I own every rush and Judah priest album. Same with sabbath and zeppelin and a couple by rainbow. However, just because I like one album or band over another doesn't mean it's out of ignorance to other music. It's personal taste. You need to learn that.
Hank Hill whose killingfields95?
Nice to see the Priest finally getting the respect it deserves for the talent, dedication and hard work those guys put into their albums. I think Glenn is very under-rated.
You use the song "On Fire" for the debut Van Halen album? From the same album that has "Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love" AND "Atomic Punk", you pick THAT cut? Well, at least you didn't pick "Little Dreamer", so there's that. Just my opinion. Rock on everybody!
"Sun in the fun?" I think you mean "fun in the sun!". Still great albums here!
I see somebody else was doing a little acid back then. Hee hee,
I guess we're not doing live albums, but the debuts by Molly Hatchet and Rose Tattoo deserve a mention too.
Nice to see my Fave Priest album come in at number 1 !!
It's ironic that "Stained Glass" is mentioned when "Priest" is spelled wrong on the graphic for the album here.
I refer to that the cover art of "Stained Class" as "The Death of Destro."
Also, have to show love for Scorpions were doing around then. "Taken by Force" is a masterpiece, IMO.
Gaaah, that's what I get for trusting my memory over Metal Archives.
No mentioning of Heavy Load - Full Speed at High Level, It was better than Van Halen's debut that's for sure.
Maiden didnt put an album out that year?
I like all the albums listed and mentioned but would rate VH. Debut at number one. .. it clearly changed music and continues to inspire new guitarists more than any other album . mentioned. Jmho
Top 5:
1. Stained Class by Judas Priest
2. Long Live Rock 'n' Roll by Rainbow
3. Van Halen I by Van Halen
4. Killing Machine by Judas Priest
5. Hemispheres by Rush
Different order, but the top 5 cannot be disputed.
Van Halen I is a great album, but overrated. Who ever needs to hear "Running with the Devil", "You Really Got Me", and "Jamie's Cryin'".
Ace Frehley's solo album, Y & T's Struck Down, and Uriah Heeps' Fallen Angel are all great metal albums as well.
