@@helloskinny510 Yes, MLB were a unique band, definitely - they captured the sense of musical dynamics that's eluded so many hard rock bands wanting to emulate Zeppelin. Two very good guitar players who were both able to play lead and duel, an awesome, tight rhythm section - and a charismatic, funny frontman with a xoulful voice - they made great use of all of this, and it shows on the album. At that point they were a better hard rock/glam rock act than both INXS and G'n'R. They were not a grunge band, so it's hard to say how they would have adapted if they'd survived and had to make their follow-up album at a time when grunge was exploding all around them in their hometown.
Layne as well. From what Chris said, Layne broke down in front of the other guys after Wood past away. I believe Chris would be giving him that hug he said he wished they would have then.
Had a friend take me and another friend to a MLB show back in 1990 when we visited in Seattle. They were unbelievable. I don't remember the other guys (who I only later found out were Stone and Jeff from Pearl Jam) but I definitely remember Andy as front man and he was star all the way. You couldn't help but just stand in awe of him. And funniest guy I ever saw lead a band.... And when my friend called me a year later and told me 'remember that guy? He's dead" I wept. This reopened all that.

I was curious how charismatic Andrew Wood was, considering that the record company signed Mother Love Bone and had high expectations in the band just because of him, to the point that they dropped the band immediately after his death without giving them any chance. I thought, wow, how can a single person create that kind of impact on people? Well, all I can say after 5 and a half minutes of interview, is that he was a powerful and very creative soul. I imagine him gathering so many people around him. He had very good vibes. Without a doubt, a great loss for all the people who knew him and for the alternative rock scene.
Saw them with the Dogs D'Amour at this tiny club on the northside of Chicago in 88....virtually no one was there....40 people tops. Had no clue who they were at all.....but I remember Andy just owning the crowd....He truly acted like he was playing in front of thousands at the Garden. The band were good....they didn't blow me away...I think they probably became much tighter as a result of this tour and they were still fleshing out their sound to some degree but I am so happy I got to see them. Was a totally random thing....a friend asked me to go just to get out and see some music and BOOM.....I got to see MLB. Chatted with everyone in the band for a few minutes. We talked about the rigor of touring in a van (which SUCKS for any of you who haven't done it) and wished them well. They weren't really used to the cold midwest winters and I remember talking to them about that stuff. Jeff, Andy and Greg were the ones I spoke to the most. Really solid down to earth guys. Great memories. Man....What could have been if things just didn't play out the way they did.

There wasn't one distinctive sound.
Andy was in my dream on 1/10/23. He was so beautiful and I recognized him right a way. Still has that personality. We went to a cafe. He was so chill and we just talked life. He was so happy and doing well. 🥰🥰🥰❤️❤️❤️
Grew up, play music and still live in Seattle. Andrew was 8 months older than me. Grunge still hadn't been given a "label" then. We all just thought of it as hard rock, we were sick of the L.A. pop music that grew out of the early 80's. To this day Andrew's death deeply affects a lot of people. There were a lot of bands but lots of moving band to band. It felt like a pretty small family. It was fun, there was no feeling of competition just that we wanted to play loud and hard. I talked to an ex local DJ recently from a local famous station KISW and she was finally hanging a picture of Mother Love Bone after all of these years and she's still not sure if she can leave it up. Had they stayed together MLB would have been really big and Pearl Jam wouldn't have existed and that would have been fine with me.

Music has so many 'what ifs' and tragedies, but this is the only one that truly hits deep. And I honestly don't know why. I have spent a lot of time reading about Andy, leading me to just sit and feel genuine sadness for him. Just that 'what if'.

Although Andy did do heroin, its unfair to remark that "Andrew died of an overdose of heroin". Boom end of story. Kurt Louder of MTV did say "complications of a heroin overdose" which wasn't entirely true either. I've seen everything that can be viewed on this and I'm sure alto of people think this is merely "splitting hairs", but the fact of the matter is, Andy got a "bad dose" that over a dozen users had taken & were all in the ER because of this. My information is that the majority of these others survived, in spite of it and Andy didn't pass away for several days even becoming conscious at one point, briefly, then slipping into a coma before being declared brain dead & life support stopped. Maybe its not important to some, but to me, a talented, loving person, who loved life, music, his mates & his fiance, the circumstances should be accurate. He was far from perfect, did heroin, rehab, twice, but he was a perfection in music. My .02 cents to a man who inspired so many.

I'll continue to miss him as will the rest of his fans. That's all. :(

It is absolutely terrifying to an extremely sick awake person, let alone a sleeping loner. A comatose loner. A dead loner, with missing nurses notes from the last ten hours of his life. Apparently, he had pupil response upon testing yet not upon the time of the missing medical info. Don't think that just what you heard in this interview didn't or couldn't have hit a nerve somewhere. Perhaps the competing bands, record companies, friends who really were not friends, god knows who felt threatened by what would happen when Mother Love Bone hit the charts. It was a long time coming. They could and should have been signed earlier. In my personal opinion, as a singer, Andy had an extremely unique voice, great range, ability to sing different notes than were playing in the background, an ability to reach into your heart and touch your soul, and more CHARISMA than just about any band front man ever! He loved his audiences. He loved the people, and they loved him. In my opinion, Geffen, who approached them first and strung them along, made a mistake by not signing them sooner, probably unsure of how much money they could shave off the top of the contract for their Big Name and association with bigger bands. Mother Love Bone had a sound that was so unique, everyone at Geffen must have seen them in a very interesting light when compared to G'N'R and their other bands. Andy talks about being strung along, and about waiting to sign with Geffen so long that they were approached by several other labels, signed, and finally were ready to unleash "Love Rock" on the world. I have no idea what happened, but think the circumstances of his death are weird. The band was supposed to release "Apple" right after he passed away- how odd he should die just as the LONG awaited album was due to be released. Could be a coincidence, could be more nefarious. Seems so strange. Why at that very time? It was before the world at large met Andrew and MLB. The records would have sold like hotcakes. MLB would have been a main player in the bridge from hair bands to Grunge/alternative. It was too perfect. Something had to go wrong. Maybe it was not a coincidence, as they say, money talks, bullshit walks. . Never stay alone in the hospital. Make your wishes known. Go to the best hospital you can because they are all corporate machines today and if you go to one, at least give yourself a fighting chance. Trust me. It can be scary scary as a fully grown adult and hospitals are creepy anyway, with sick people all over the place in agony, screaming, crying and dying. it is hell being an inpatient. I can't imagine being comatose and in the care of total strangers without my family around. We will know one day just what happened with Andy, just not quite yet, but one day when we are all "Stargazers"...till then, Love you Andy, miss the impact you had on music and wish there was another like you but you were just so special and unique...RIP L'andrew, 1966-1990.
Andrew Wood seems like such a nice guy who really needed to get all his music to the people. he just seemed like the kinda guy who doesnt have an ego but really needs to be famous. :) i wish he wasn't taken away so soon :(
All things for a reason. Apple is one of my all time favorite albums. I heard Andrew was a funny dude on stage, would have loved to seen them in concert...
So I read he was sober for 160 days, relapsed on a small amount, but a bad batch was going around as others OD'd that same evening. He had a brain aneurysm and that would have caused a stroke and the drugs made happen while he was out..and possibly later he had a bad reaction to the drugs at the hospital but he was brain dead for so long that once they got his heart going it was too late. Anyway, he seemed like a hell of a character. Props to him for accomplishing so much in just 24 years and helping create such an amazing genre
I love Andy Wood - one of my inspirations to be myself more. Very charismatic and a fine wordsmith. I love MLB. He said he doesn't think this is a Seattle sound but now it totally is!
Glen Campbell was an exceptional guitarist and had amazing range as a vocalist. He was a session musician for many huge acts like the Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Merle Haggard, Elvis and many more. I can understand why he was a huge early influence on Andrew.
Brett OBerry saw a clip of Buffalo Springfield playing (a TV appearance, Ed Sullivan maybe?) with a guy on guitar sitting in, back to the audience, off to the right. It was GC).
I found that Glen Campbell reference so endearing...my Father and Mother, who have both Died, sadly, adored Glen Campbell. Their favorite song of his was "Honey, Come Back." I've listened to it so many times. Very comforting in my pain. Andrew seemed to be an interesting character.

I didn't discover MLB until after PJ came out and I became a fan of them. I bought the CD and couldn't stop playign it for weeks. I might have to breka it out and listen again, it's been a LOOOOONG time.
My dad liked Glen Cambell so much. So weird! He liked Ricky Nelson and Willie Nelson as well. His love for those bands was displaced to me. Not even talking about the Doors and the Stones. Great to see this video.
I used to have a copy of the Motherlovebone tribute album on tape. This was before all the deaths. I was very young, and shocked that this up and coming star died before he made it.
Is funny the story he tells about Geffen. It's exactly what happened to the Nirvana guys. Kurt always remembered that winter 1990-1991 after signing Geffen as the worst, so much so that after returning from the Nevermind recording sessions in LA Kurt was evicted.
The final part of the liner note that reads -"Apple" is all the time we spent together- always gets me, to us this is an amazing record but to the rest of the band is a big part of their lives, so sad... RIP L'Andrew

That is not the case where I am from. I knew Andy - we went to school together on Bainbridge Island across the water from Seattle. We know him well still here. Mother Love Bone wasn't actually "Grunge", not yet. And he was an addict. He'd relapsed before. But no one wants to be. I don't think the "facts" are entirely correct about that night. But anyway, I don't know about Cobain but Chris and Eddie have done justice to his memory and are passionate musicians. Andy would've loved Eddie.
fair enough..anger is a common part of death & loss. A. He WASNT a junkie...he had been clean for over 18 mo. and something caused him to relapse that night. it was a bad batch & two others were taken to the hospital that night from using it..but the difference is.. they werent alone & someone was able to get them medical attention faster. Andy didnt want to be an addict...he was an empath..ultra sensitive to emotional pain..thats the biggest reason people turn to drugs.
My dad played in a band with Kevin Wood and contrary to popular belief Andy didn't get a bad batch, he had an aneurysm that had been in the works for some time. Prior to his death he had fevers and migraines and when he shot up that night, the change in his blood pressure led to the aneurysm bursting
Bubber Ducky He survived a few days in a coma I believe from complications from the dose - and yes, in the hospital he died of an aneurism -the heroin dose caused his blood pressure to be off.
You are probably not an addict. A drug for an addict is a symptom of a deeper disease. The drug really is not important as long as it can keep you from thinking about the REAL issues.

But, the fact that a lot of others were treated in the ER that night, for the same reason, apparently under the same circumstances as Andy, his consciousness and that he survived for 2-3 days, well u know, ur right. It's sad and such a waste of a talented young almost national star, the end just doesn't justify the means. My only point was that it didn't appear to be just 'another OD by a f'ing junkie'. I'll continue to miss him as will the rest of his fans. That's all. :(
+robin mcrae You are absolutely correct, Andy was said to die of a brain aneurysm several days after having "overdosed." Don't ever stay in the hospital alone. It is absolutely terrifying to an extremely sick awake person, let alone a sleeping loner. A comatose loner. A dead loner, with missing nurses notes from the last ten hours of his life. Apparently, he had pupil response upon testing yet not upon the time of the missing medical info. Don't think that just what you heard in this interview didn't or couldn't have hit a nerve somewhere. Perhaps the competing bands, record companies, friends who really were not friends, god knows who felt threatened by what would happen when Mother Love Bone hit the charts. It was a long time coming. They could and should have been signed earlier. In my personal opinion, as a singer, Andy had an extremely unique voice, great range, ability to sing different notes than were playing in the background, an ability to reach into your heart and touch your soul, and more CHARISMA than just about any band front man ever! He loved his audiences. He loved the people, and they loved him. In my opinion, Geffen, who approached them first and strung them along, made a mistake by not signing them sooner, probably unsure of how much money they could shave off the top of the contract for their Big Name and association with bigger bands. Mother Love Bone had a sound that was so unique, everyone at Geffen must have seen them in a very interesting light when compared to G'N'R and their other bands. Andy talks about being strung along, and about waiting to sign with Geffen so long that they were approached by several other labels, signed, and finally were ready to unleash "Love Rock" on the world. I have no idea what happened, but think the circumstances of his death are weird. The band was supposed to release "Apple" right after he passed away- how odd he should die just as the LONG awaited album was due to be released. Could be a coincidence, could be more nefarious. Seems so strange. Why at that very time? It was before the world at large met Andrew and MLB. The records would have sold like hotcakes. MLB would have been a main player in the bridge from hair bands to Grunge/alternative. It was too perfect. Something had to go wrong. Maybe it was not a coincidence, as they say, money talks, bullshit walks.
. Never stay alone in the hospital. Make your wishes known. Go to the best hospital you can because they are all corporate machines today and if you go to one, at least give yourself a fighting chance. Trust me. It can be scary scary as a fully grown adult and hospitals are creepy anyway, with sick people all over the place in agony, screaming, crying and dying. it is hell being an inpatient. I can't imagine being comatose and in the care of total strangers without my family around.
We will know one day just what happened with Andy, just not quite yet, but one day when we are all "Stargazers"...till then, Love you Andy, miss the impact you had on music and wish there was another like you but you were just so special and unique...RIP L'andrew, 1966-1990.

He was so good and so original, it's a shame he wasn't here today.
So I read he was sober for 160 days, relapsed on a small amount, but a bad batch was going around as others OD'd that same evening. He had a brain aneurysm and that would have caused a stroke and the drugs made happen while he was out..and possibly later he had a bad reaction to the drugs at the hospital but he was brain dead for so long that once they got his heart going it was too late. Anyway, he seemed like a hell of a character. Props to him for accomplishing so much in just 24 years and helping create such an amazing genre

I love Andy Wood - one of my inspirations to be myself more. Very charismatic and a fine wordsmith. I love MLB. He said he doesn't think this is a Seattle sound but now it totally is!
Glen Campbell was an exceptional guitarist and had amazing range as a vocalist. He was a session musician for many huge acts like the Beach Boys, Frank Sinatra, Merle Haggard, Elvis and many more. I can understand why he was a huge early influence on Andrew.
Brett OBerry saw a clip of Buffalo Springfield playing (a TV appearance, Ed Sullivan maybe?) with a guy on guitar sitting in, back to the audience, off to the right. It was GC).
I found that Glen Campbell reference so endearing...my Father and Mother, who have both Died, sadly, adored Glen Campbell. Their favorite song of his was "Honey, Come Back." I've listened to it so many times. Very comforting in my pain. Andrew seemed to be an interesting character.

I used to have a copy of the Motherlovebone tribute album on tape. This was before all the deaths. I was very young, and shocked that this up and coming star died before he made it.

Is funny the story he tells about Geffen. It's exactly what happened to the Nirvana guys. Kurt always remembered that winter 1990-1991 after signing Geffen as the worst, so much so that after returning from the Nevermind recording sessions in LA Kurt was evicted.

That is not the case where I am from. I knew Andy - we went to school together on Bainbridge Island across the water from Seattle. We know him well still here. Mother Love Bone wasn't actually "Grunge", not yet. And he was an addict. He'd relapsed before. But no one wants to be. I don't think the "facts" are entirely correct about that night. But anyway, I don't know about Cobain but Chris and Eddie have done justice to his memory and are passionate musicians. Andy would've loved Eddie.

fair enough..anger is a common part of death & loss. A. He WASNT a junkie...he had been clean for over 18 mo. and something caused him to relapse that night. it was a bad batch & two others were taken to the hospital that night from using it..but the difference is.. they werent alone & someone was able to get them medical attention faster. Andy didnt want to be an addict...he was an empath..ultra sensitive to emotional pain..thats the biggest reason people turn to drugs.
My dad played in a band with Kevin Wood and contrary to popular belief Andy didn't get a bad batch, he had an aneurysm that had been in the works for some time. Prior to his death he had fevers and migraines and when he shot up that night, the change in his blood pressure led to the aneurysm bursting

Bubber Ducky He survived a few days in a coma I believe from complications from the dose - and yes, in the hospital he died of an aneurism -the heroin dose caused his blood pressure to be off.
After all the beautiful people we have lost to heroin, it makes me wonder why the fuck anyone would ever 'experiment' with it.
You are probably not an addict. A drug for an addict is a symptom of a deeper disease. The drug really is not important as long as it can keep you from thinking about the REAL issues.

Amen to that! I know some people in their late 30's early 40's who listen to 'Grunge' and they have no clue who Mother Love Bone is. I could talk about Mother love Bone all day along with Pearl jam (Who some didn't know who they were either) and i'm 13!! I find it sad that people have lost the idea in this world of what good music is.... it's just sad.
MLB Should be more well more known. They we're a great band and always will be.
