I feel like he studied the whole process before hand and had pointers from the actual tech, as a tech myself I'm not impressed because he basically did what we all did in school, which is study and have someone who knew what they were doing. By the time he took this video he prolly wasn't a "noob" in transmission swapping anymore he had just never done it. All of my teachers ran the exact same kind of tests on us, we all did it and passed. The tech just gave him a test and study guide lmao

I tow a 3550lb trailer daily. 2 trans coolers with fans. I can drop the transmission and transfer case in about 2 hrs. Have it back together and running in 4hrs. On the side of the road. I have a go jack with 10" extensions. I lace them under the front and rear diffs. Lift the whole truck. Drop the shafls and linkage. Pull the crossmember with the t case and adapter. Drop the starter pull the bolts I added to the brace for the front diff. Pull the bolts bell housing to eng with the fluid lines. Then it falls out and I get the torque converter. Easy. That's one day. If I staer early I Can have it back in same day.

Its doesn't have to be race when you're learning, it depends on man power, tools, as well as experience. Buddy blew the clutch on his wrx and we swapped the clutch out in an afternoon. I was directing them what to do because I was the only one that had ever swapped a trans and clutch out before but never an awd car. We were lucky the base had an auto repair center where you could rent lifts and tools, that made it 10x easier. Hope you changed the clutch while you were already there anyway.

Been loving this series. I’ve been building a e36 as well, 98 328i in a rare canyonrot red. Done a ZF 5 speed swap (was a auto) with all upgraded parts other than a chassis mounted shifter, managed to get my hands on a m LSD, did the m50 manifold & ASC delete as well as did the golf tee mod (keeps the butterfly valve open on the second exhaust tip, sounds much nicer). Now I just gotta order in some new trim pieces, get my new m3 bumper & nose panel painted and then get my trunks dent fixed as well as a full paint touch up & she’s mint mint. Not a single CE light nor any issues mechanically. Had someone that was behind me at a stop sign cut around me as I was merging onto the main road so to avoid my car being written off by this guy I quickly glanced over to the left and it was clear so I swerved to avoid a accident, well some lady was in my blind spot & then sped up when I tried to move over to avoid the other guy. Literally the most minor damage done to her Buick suv, because I felt bad I offered to pay out of pocket but noooo she wanted to go through insurance & if it’s deemed 50/50 (which I believe it will be) then she will be paying for the tiny lil paint transfer & maybe few surface scratches herself. My trim has marks from her tire as well as the drivers door trim clips are broken, need to get new clips or just get the m3 trim. Super choked about the whole thing, like I’m 99% sure it was mostly paint transfer cuz that’s all it looks like on my mirror. FYI all the happened was my mirror hit her fender (hence why I say she sped up cuz i looked over & she only coulda been in my blind spot which wouldn’t line up with her front fender to my mirror) isn’t even broken just has some scuffs, I’m more mad about my trim because it looks so bad with the clips being broken and it just sitting outta place.

having a hoist, full air, and a trans jack makes the process way faster. e36 guy myself and i randomly pulled the drivetrain from an ls400 for a project. went into it blind and got the trans out in ~25 minutes, engine onto a pallet in 2.5 hours. compare that to when i was 16 pulling the trans in my 36 in the driveway, yeah that was an all day ordeal

On my own e36’s and e36’s in general i usally use around 3 hours changing the clutch. Its really easy and a tip for those who never tried. Sometimes the starter is stuck and then the gearbox is stuck aswell and when you Get that out, the transmisjon comes easy. And the little flip on the gear arm on top of the gearbox is easiest to take with a short fladhead after you have lowered the gearbox. And you take all the bolts from the back with an long extension

Hey me and my brother took 5 weeks to put my Mazda 6s transmission in, one that my brother built in college, and also can’t forget that at that time he had been working for Mazda for 8 years😂 he was also the only Mazda diesel tech in America for his last few months working at Mazda and it still took us forever, then when I told him that the input shaft bearing was grinding he refused to believe me and said it was just the throwout bearing… a few weeks later and “kaplooey” bye bye transmission, it was indeed the input shaft bearing grinding, and incase anyone is wondering what the sound was, it sounded exactly like a throwout bearing, but normally throughout bearings will grind when you step on the clutch, mine was grinding, but only when you weren’t on the clutch, once you stepped on the clutch it stopped, I told him I had been watching videos and the noise often gets misdiagnosed as a throwout bearing, and mf wouldn’t believe me

Great job there mate. I have one slightly related question, could you possibly tell me the diameter of the transmission bell housing? (the input side) I want to know cause I'm planning on making a rwd swap pre-project and I want to know how much space I have and would have inside my car.

Easiest clutch I ever did was on my old 2002 V6 Mustang, took me maybe an hour and a half and that was only because the top bolt was a pain in the ass.

The first time I swapped a trans. It took about 6 hours. I got it down to 2 hours but I got really good at it and it the trans was junk I literally dropped it on the floor and threw it out from underneath. I then later on took parts off of it that were good.

At least you didnt have a pre-95 car with the starter mounted by bolt-and-nut instead of a captive bolt
You gotta yank the intake manifold to get a wrench on the nut

Took me 3 full days to do that job on my mk6 golf . I'm about to do it on my dad's e36 at some point. It might not be that bad since it only has 160k km on it

The guy who rebuilt my transmission lifted the truck up, pulled the transmission out, and rebuilt the whole thing then he put it all back together, painted it and let it dry and installed it back into my truck in about an hour.

I'm gonna have to vehemently disagree with that statement. the BMW is amazing to shift now that I've got the coolerworx in there - before hand it was annoying with all the slop and mushiness trying to get into gear. now it slots into place like the lever on a bolt-action rifle. but to each their own i guess
