    Dang, I lived thru this era, in H.S. My buddies had these cars, I only had a beautiful blue 1957 Del Air, 2 dr hgt with a bad 301 Duntov 30-30 cam, fulie heads
    I could hold my own with these Chevy 11's. Those were the good ole days for sure!

    327 is still a great engine. When built properly, they would flat out scream.

    That is three tenths of a second and three mph faster than my stock L 79 two door sedan ran stock class in 1966. I ran 4.88's and went through the lights at 6400 rpm. It was also my commute car and was not fun on the freeway! It was very consistent and my best was 13.19 at 106mph. Off the showroom floor it ran 15.52 at 93 mph. Amazing what a pair of headers, and not very good ones at that and a 4.88 RE will do for a small block Chevy. Of course that first year GM California mandated "Air Injection" smog pump wasn't doing a lot for performance. Car cost new about one dollar per pound;, under 2800 dollars. Recently one like mine with 8000 original miles didn't reach reserve at over 80 thousand dollars on e-Bay!

      I have an original numbers matching '67 SS with the 275 horse 327, 4-speed, 3.55:1 12 bolt posi and factory disc brakes. My buddy owned it back in the early 80's and it was no match for my '69 455 (NOM obviously) GTO 4-speed and 4.33 gears but I fell in love with that sweet little Nova! Blew the station wagon engine in my GTO (and his doors off) racing him one night and sold the GTO (not smart). A year later his wife was pregnant and the Nova had to go. I bought it in a heartbeat and still have it. That was 1983. Warmed it up with a 350 horse cam, intake and carb and man what a blast!!! Surprised a lot of big block cars! I would part with it in an instant for my old GTO though. Thanks for the awesome video and for letting me ramble!

      What Tom said! Had the 66 SS and it came with a 283--dude b4 me had beaten the 327 to death. Took all my high school take home pay and found an I79. Added headers, Crow cam, Edelbrock Tarantula and Holley 650 DP. Changed to 4 speed and 4:11 rear and I didn't see many Camaros, Mustangs, GTO's or GTX's either 'cept in the rear or side view mirror. Neat thing was a machine shop EE in his mid 20's had a 62 with a wicked FI 327 and 5:13's and he owned the streets of So MPLS in the 70's. I worried him ( a little) that first time we let em go, and he was interested in what I'd done and was kind enough to give some good tuning advice on timing. Thanks for the 'ride'! Was shifting right along with ya!

      I was living in Cape Coral back in 66. Local bought a new 66 Nova with the L79. Beautiful car. Beautiful blue color (Marina blue, I think). A few months later it was totaled. They ran great, looked great, but had awful brakes.

      @@tomlea3713 Hey Tom, you didn't mention any improvements to the exhaust. If you're still running stock manifolds, there are cast iron "headers" for the small block now. More power than the stockers, but less audible "ding" than headers. Check it out, if you're interested - www.holley.com/products/exhaust/headers_and_exhaust_manifolds/exhaust_manifolds/parts/11704-1FLT

    As a Ford guy (although I appreciate everyone s cars) I have to say Chevy made really hot engines, made a lot of them and put them in a lot of cars. Ford sold a lot of 289 2v, Chevy sold 327s, 350s, 396s and 427s that made more horsepower than cubic inches and put them in everything.

    My Dad ordered a two door hardtop '66 Chevy II Nova with the L79 option and a 3 speed on the column for "insurance purposes". Wishes he still had it! Just out of high school, he was drafted and went to Korea to serve as an M.P. and was still making payments on it. His younger sister needed a car to drive and wound up trading it in on a volkswagon beetle!!! Needless to say, Dada was sick when he returned from his duty in Korea.

    If it's a pure stock class, how did you limit leaf spring wrap-up if traction bars aren't allowed.

    • @firebirdjone
      @firebirdjone Před 7 lety

      On leaf spring cars they do allow you to clamp the front of the rear leaf springs to help prevent wrap-up (wheel hop)
