I don't think you really caught on to the lyrics, Mugs. The album, and later the movie were about a boy who grew up during WWII and became a rock star. His father was killed in the war and was raised by his over-bearing, over-protective mother. She ultimately helped him to build a psychological WALL around himself and it did great harm in his life.
The beginning of the song comes from the boy where he is asking his mother about all kinds of things that worry him. Like...
"Mother do you think they'll drop the bomb? (England was mercilessly bombed during the war)
    or
Mother do you think they'll put me in the firing line? (Will they make me go to war too?)
"Hush now baby, baby, don't you cry
Mama's gonna make all of your nightmares come true (WTF?)
Mama's gonna put all of her fears into you (not a good idea, mom!)
Mama's gonna keep you right here under her wing (at some point mama needs to let go)
SHE WON'T LET YOU FLY but she might let you sing." (we all have to fly at some point or we'll die)
Hard to really catch any Floyd song on the first, second, or tenth listen to - especially this album. But great reaction and the live version was a treat as well. Peace.

A teacher once told me: “A text out of context is just a pretext”.
You are perfectly right. Understanding the context gives a text its real meaning.
With Pink Floyd especially with The Wall and Animals, it's always necessary to know the context.

"Mother did it need to be so high". He's referring to her wall she made around him. This whole album is about walls, walls we build, walls we make in our minds (the matrix). I know mothers like this and they are mothers! They do more harm than good.

Mother is a chapter in the book called The Wall. That's what is funky about The Wall, you can pick a tune but you have to know where it falls in the book to get the full meaning. 44 yrs of listening to it. I saw the concert in 1980 at Nassau.

Floyd’s lyrics are nothing but bars. Great to see people not from this generation are into this genre get Floyd. They are not a band, they are an emotional experience. David Gilmour can put more soul into one note on the guitar than most guitarists can’t do in an entire song.

    This track is so great.
When that first main beat drops after all the build up about a minute and a half into it, I feel it in my soul every time.
    "Ooohh Babe."
    "Ooohh Baby."
"Of course Momma's gonna help build a wall."
    🎸🎶🎸🎶🎸🎶
    So dope.

This album (and DSotM) were the sound tracks of my teenage years. But you really can't go wrong with any song you pick. I recommend Echoes off the Meddle album, it's my all time favorite Floyd song. I also recommend High Hopes, specifically the Live in G'Dansk concert version. That version has an extra solo at the end. No matter how many times I've heard it, I can't get through it without crying.

The next brick in Pink's wall is that of a mother who tries to compensate for the absence of the father by smothering her child with "love" and protectiveness.
Quote from Roger Waters: "If you can level one accusation at mothers it is that they tend to protect their children too much. Too much and for too long. That's all. This isn't a portrait of my mother, although some of the , you know, one or two of the things in there apply to her as well as to I'm sure lots of other people's mothers.

  • @winstonhewett6679
    @winstonhewett6679 Před 8 měsíci +1

Belated "Bless You"! He is building a "Wall" around himself, with his "Mother's" help! That's why he asked his Mother did it need to be so high? Roger Waters, normally the bass player, sings the child's part, while David Gilmour sings the Mother's part in the song. he also plays the amazing guitar solos! I can remember listening to this complete album many times thru from start to finish! A true masterpiece!!!

lol me and my siblings still make fun of my mom and her elastic arm. When we were on a road trip and we were misbehaving in the back seat, she would slap us across the cheek from the front seat without losing control of the car. If she missed one or two of us, she would slam the breaks so we all flew forward and found ourselves within reach or the elastic arm. lollol God be merciful if you got jolted and landed in the front seat with her. Not only do you get your ass whopped, you have to spend the next 6 hours up front sitting shotgun with the seat belt on staring at the road while your brothers and sisters were in the back having all the fun. Seatbelts back then were used more for punishment than safety. You can't just send a kid to their room on a road trip. You gotta beat them till they cry and strap them in right next to you. lololol Moms. Funny creatures.

Mother-son enmeshment. Not in a sexual way. These are how “Mama’s Boys” are made. Call me a brain-dead lunatic that’s into mentally torturing myself, but my husband turned out to be one. Dear “awful Mama” is 90, sick but ain’t going anywhere soon. It’s a heartbreaking song. And a song that causes me a lot of anger.
BTW, “The Wall” is a movie. The first movie I went to when I started to date my husband-to-be. 1981.
    How ironic.

The bricks in the Wall are all the things that stop us from breaking thru and moving forward, overcoming every obstacle and living without fear, worry or anxiety at all about anything. We break thru by the power of God's Holy Word and the Holy Spirit, who raised Christ from death. Life holds us back. No one succeeds intil they break thru by faith, believing they can/will

I've listened to many reactions from young people about this song, and so far everyone seems to think that this song is about how cool mother is. I think that if they really listen to the song in the context of the album, they'll find that mother is a major contributor to this mans mental illness! In other words a mother who is way too overbearing, is not healthy for her sons healthy mental development. Mothers don't need to know everything about their sons life. It's just not healthy! Especially if she's high!

Dont be fooled by the nay sayers......Roger Waters wrote The Wall album about his own life and this song about the relationship he had with his own mother .
A lot of the dark lyrics in PF's songs come from Rogers early life and it's lasting affect.
The album is brilliant but hard to appreciate until you understand it.
The movie is a disaster until you know the story and its origin.......then it to becomes brilliant.
