I cut up the stalks of the Swiss Chard & add it into tuna or chicken salad just like you would celery. It's a great crunch & tastier than celery with out the strings of celery. The leaves are good in salads, cooked in stir fry like you said. I just boil mine like spinach sometimes. I grow mine in partial shade & it does better.
Yay for the Fall Garden! Also just wanted to mention, as a long time viewer, those new microphones are awesome! We can hear you both so very clear like never before! Has to be THE clearest outside video ever. Great job, love you guys! 😁
@@ourmontanahomestead8880 I was thinking voice over too! I kept watching their mouths and finally realized they were talking in real time. And even though it was windy, no wind sound at all. And yes, great video as always. I love how excited Jason gets about gardening and Brooke, not so much lol but she does help anyway. I know how you feel Brooke! 😁
Gardening is hard work but so rewarding. Then benefits by far outweigh the efforts!! You both work together so well… you can easily see your love for each other and the dream you’re building together !!!
In England, we call them a Swede. Because they’re a Swedish turnips. Lot less of a mouthful than rudabaga 😅 My mom used to make Mached swede with butter. So tasty and nutty.
My grandfather used a hand plow similar to yours. Happy memories. Grandfather used to have conversations with his animals, especially his dog Ginger. He was a good man with a huge heart. Thank you Cog Hill for that memory.💕
I'm not going to lie. I'm kind of jealous of your garden. It is making me miss my daddy big time! He always had a garden for every season of the year until he got to old to do it. RIP Pops!
LOL! That would be quite a sight. Giddy Moody, skipping all around with glee, leaving his big plops of poop in all the strategic spots of the garden! :-D
Loving the dancing farmer sneaking into the video, really enjoying see Brook growing and becoming more confident being on video herself, I loved her dance last video
Y'all may want to stock up on collard seeds. The other day, a guest on the Hoss channel said there may be a shortage on those seeds next year. I wouldn't want y'all to miss out on your faves!😉 God bless! 🙏💗
Mrs Brook, you brought the biggest smile to my face the morning. With your hat on and planting coller greens, I remember my grandmother planting hers. It was a sweet memory. Thanks
Rutabagas and turnips are two different vegetables in the U.S. I love both diced and added to vegetable soup. My preference is turnips but rutabagas are delicious mashed with butter, cream and pepper.
That is interesting , because in the UK they are called swedes, while turnip just means the white type. Whatever the name, yes, we mash it with carrots too 😀
Good morning Cog Hill and Cog squad happy yall are moving right along with the garden this will keep you fully stocked with food. Everyone remember to smash the like button for the best channel on U Tube 💯 ❤ 👌 😉
I've noticed over the past few videos that Jason appears to have fully recovered from his two bouts of illness this year. His energy level is back, his breathing is back to normal and his movements are much more at ease - yay!
My mom loved rutabaga, she would make them every Thanksgiving, and she would mashed them like mashed potatoes. I never cared for them, still too bitter for me, but she did lol, and were in Northeast Ohio, the grocery stores always carried them during the Holidays, mom is no longer with us, thanks for the memories of the rutabaga❤
I love them with what we call boiled dinner. It’d ham or corned beef, potatoes and cabbage and turnip all boiled in a pot. I do the turnip and rutabaga separate pots but mash them both up like potatoes. Love vinegar on top.
Y’all are living the life I’ve always loved. Planting, harvesting, and preserving! I’m 73 and no longer able to garden much, but I still love to dream about all the things I’d love to do if I could. I love watching your sweet family!
Oh my Gracious I'm so excited to see y'all get started on the fall garden at Lil Cog your garden was so beautiful and Bountiful... Y'all gonna be eatin good in the neighborhood...lol I absolutely love you guy's to the moon and back...
Loved your dance with the feathers. They stopped to watch you to see if they could learn any new moves. Y'all sure planted lots of veggies. They will taste great. Glad you got your delivery so you could finish it. Take care and stay safe out there. GOD BLESS Y'ALL.
I would love to live near y'all and help with your garden. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and life. Love being part of the Cog Squad. God Bless you all and your home and garden.
In Ireland they are called sweet turnips. My mom mashed them along with mashed potatoes. My family love this always needed a very large bowl on the table. We all loved rutabagas.
Good morning! What you've accomplished in less than a year is amazing! Can't remember the date that you moved but I'm sure you will have an anniversary celebration!🐷🐄🐐🐥🦆
As my papa always said after the planting! Now you make food I’m hungry ! He loved the plants and demanded them to grow ! He had a green thumb and gave it to me when he went to be with Jesus ! My health is bad so I get to demand growth after it’s planted by the family ! Love y’all ! ❤❤❤
I know you didn’t mention it in this episode, but your new mics are working out great! So nice to be able to hear Brooke even when she’s way down the row planting.
Rutabagas are also popular in the New England (north east) area. They are used in boiled dinner (chuck roast, onions, carrots, cabbage and rutabagas) and at Thanksgiving in a mashed potatoes and carrots recipe. Yes, the wax covering the rutabaga is used to preserve the root.
My gosh does the sheriff nugget Love them grapes wowowowow. The 2 little cats LOL Gidget & Arlo looking out that window are sure some cuties . The garden is going to be beyond awesome.
I've probably said this before, but for me, your videos could never be too long. Your family really is special, and all of your videos put a big smile on my face. For this reason, I could hangout with y'all all day. Can't wait to see your garden take off. It's a big one, so no food insecurity on the 40. Love y'all ❣️ ❤️🌵☀️⛈️🌈☮️🐎🐐
I sure would enjoy seeing recipes and ways to cook what y’all planted today. I love collards and have cooked them. But not familiar with the others. I love vegetables and excited about trying new ones, it’s just easier when you can see how they are used. Well guys prayers for a successful fall/winter garden 🪴
Good job Cog Hill Family. Especially Brooke who doesn’t love gardening quite as much as Jason if I remember correctly. Good eats coming up soon on the farm!
Ya'll garden is gonna be absolutely beautiful when it comes to full harvest. 😍 Loving the new mic system ya'll are using. Its so much easier to hear Brooke now. God Bless ya'll 🙌
You folks just make me so happy. I love to watch you guys build your farm and absolutely love the way you interact with each other and your animals. And Jason, the love you have for gardening is the way I used to be. I'm too broken up to garden these days but I'm doing it vicariously through you! Always looking forward to your next video. God bless!
So happy for y’all planting your 1st veggie garden at the Cog Hill 40! I hope everything grows like crazy and gives you an abundance of crops like you’ve never seen! God bless y’all! ❤️
Y’all are amazing n vibe so good together. It’s different connection y’all have n clear to see. Special spark should I say. It’s super addicting guys. I just turned 40 n I got into gardening probably 3yrs ago. We grow nothing for ourselves though. Everything goes to our tortoises.
The turnip root is good made into mash potatoes, also love a few cubed turnips are just wonderful in a vegetable soup..I also love to eat a turnip sliced up and eat it like an apple.
My former elderly neighbor had a wheel a lot like that. He'd go though the middle of his rows to plow out his weeds with it. He was such a kind soul. Miss him & his wife so much. They have gone on to be with the Lord now. That brought back some sweet memories of them.
Jason’s reply when told to drive the vehicle “Well that’s a first!” 😂😂😂 It’s a rare event in your videos. I love how well you get along & work together.

I swear, Nugget lifted his head and glared at Brooke when Jason was giving him a grain treat. That bird has so much personality.
I wondered if anyone else saw that, hahaha! Nugget giving Brooke the stink eye! Oh my!! That Emu definitely has a personality and a half!!
I saw that too 😁
Yes..I was wondering if anyone else caught that look! Like what are you trying to do giving me that aweful stuff!😂
Haha. He sure did. Haha
This was awesome reaction ..
Thank You for pointing it out...

So true 😊
Love collards! For dinner last night we had collards, cornbread, and pinto beans. Perfect southern meal!
❤❤❤
Gidget and Arlo are so cute sitting in the window. It’s nice that the windows are low enough for them to see out and sit in.
So happy Jason is seeing his dream of large-scale gardening becoming reality.
Jason “straight line, not Budweiser line” 😂 thank you for always making me laugh. The garden is going to be amazing!
I chuckled at this one too! BUT the moles and mice & ants had another vision !

Y'all should train Moody to be a plow horse to help with the garden! LOVE Gidget and Arlo!
LOL! That would be quite a sight. Giddy Moody, skipping all around with glee, leaving his big plops of poop in all the strategic spots of the garden! :-D
Then they could call him an oxen.
I can see big Moody out there plowing following the bucket of food to keep him in line.
I was thinking making arlow and gidget plow dogs. lol

Oh Happy Day the Cog Hill Family is here!! Love y’all!❤️❤️❤️
Swiss chard is great in scrambled eggs with bacon and onions. I add cubed butternut squash at times. Also, it's great in quiche. So yummy!!
Rutabagas are also called turnips in my family in Canada. We mash them with cooked carrots - a Thanksgiving and Christmas dinner side staple.
