legend has it the audience is still clapping offbeat to this day
Good one hahahah the pianist solo was awkward as hell (although i liked it a lot)
@ TEVANG/// lol...pretty funny :)
they were clapping on beat when the pianist was playing his syncopated solo, just sounded awkward lol
At least they didn't clap on 1 and 3
It's pretty difficult to keep time when everything syncopated.
We lost a musical genius. But his music will never stop being fantastic.
truly
let's try to keep other geniuses alive then! ;) we still have sullivan fortner on the piano!
These guy's are fantastic.
Who was the one that died/:
@@dillonstephenson1539 Roy bro
Me contributing to a group project in college : 1:24
Or just me contributing a project in general. Funny one, you got me there.
lmao
LMAOOO U GOT ME GOOD
Lol good one
Jjajjaja funny
what a legendary bass player
You are like the only one who noticed nice
Ameen saleem!
Really???????? Nice at best if you know great bassplayers!
The bassist can make a simple bassline sound spectacular. The pianist makes you want to get up and dance. The drummer instills a ton of energy into his playing. And about Roy... no words are needed, really. A simply magnificent performance which captures the very essence of jazz. Every time I'm watching this it feels like it's the first time. RIP Roy.
Don't forget Justin Robinson on the sax, it wouldn't feel the same without him ever
@@user-qk6qy6eo9m agreed
Agreed
@NickVernardakis Agreed 100% It's my first time, but it certainly won't be my last! RIEP MrHargrove.
Man cat you said it. Whhoooo. #Cory Wong would call this a banger.
Today is the first anniversary of Roy Hargrove's death.
I will continue to listen forever.
that piano solo was the greatest simply because he had to fight through the crowds out of time clapping and he still killed it on some level
He was not fighting with the crowd, just playing with it, making syncopated rythms that made the crowd and him make great polyrythm
they were not playing out of time
@@cd-zw2tti think he meant offbeat
Saw him play at Smalls New York a couple of weeks before he passed. What a treat and legend.
He has to be one of my all time favorite pianists, and I just met him 8 minutes ago.
Lucky you😀
That’s @SullivanFortner !
Saw him with Cécile McLorin Salvant and her band last year. Pure beast...!!!
The pianist got the WAVEEEEEEES! Mad lad.
Roy Hargroveのファッションかっこよすぎ。
it's jazz, folks. variations permitted. catch them again for another except now, sadly, no Roy RIP
Watch this great interview of Olivier Theurillat who was greatly influenced by Wynton Marsallis to switch to Jazz, he talks about his career and the impact that Wynton had on his music....czcams.com/video/cy9xUBlpz6w/video.html
Yes. Thank you. People are allowed to have different renditions. Pay no attention to the Jazz Police in this comments section.
Roy, you got to live your dream as a trumpet player.... many have dreams and never get to fulfill them..... I'm glad that while you was here for the short time that it was that you got to live out your dream as a musician....... and made a mark in the history of jazz just as strong as John Coltrane , Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie , Joe Sample, George Duke, Horace Silver and a host of others just too numerous to mention... thanks for the memories brother.......
The exact thought I just had while listening to this.. I hope he enjoyed it. I don't think my dreams of being a pro are very likely to come true at this point but I can always look to people like Roy for inspiration. RIP to a genius
I completely agree! Fantastic superhit, one of a greatest jazz standards. Candy's Dulfer version has > 6M lookups. Greetings from Slovenia. Also listen Sounds of Slovenia (etno music).
Yes . I just recentky got into Roy . Im encoursged that i got into his work
it's sad how no one understands he improvised a syncopation since the audience is off beat,,,,
I actually love that mistake,,, it made it better :o)
He played his cards best he could.
@@MrGreenAKAguci00 yup-
?
what "offbeat" are people talking about, it's obviously just shifted to create the groove. you can tell by how seamlessly it goes into the full arrangement in the end of the solo. I thought it was cool and I can definitely sense the beat he was "talking" about.
They adjusted to Mr.Hargrove also...I totally agree with you also. Loved him...
I'm in tears!!! The best of the best. Rest easy, Roy!
I'm crying right now
Watched this video too many times to count and each time I hear something new. I am completely heart broken on hearing the news of Roy Hargrove's passing. Rest in power Mr. Hargrove.
Same
RIP Roy Hargrove...... awesome talent.... you gonna be missed
that drum sound

i think the drummer is also better than in this ! versionczcams.com/video/qxeb0cwjE8U/video.html
@@dave1575 I AGREE, he really was on the dime on each hit...:-))
2:10 love it ))))
"I always listen to blues. After watching this, I find a very sharp line in jazz distinguishing its important unheard notes and melodies between jazz and blues. beautiful!!" - random guy who didnt studied music..
Can I wake up and go to sleep this man playing the piano please? Thank you for making my day and night. 🎹 🎶
at first I thought the pianist was just being pretentious ... then the solo came and it had a pretty thelonious monk-esque sound so mad props
My friend, the great drummer and Ed Thigpen, said once that whatever a musician played up on stage, it was their gig. So pretentious or not, it's not for us to judge. I wasn't a huge fan of that solo but that's not my flavor. It was obviously yours, so that's another reason why people should never judge the playing of anyone in jazz.
His name is Sullivan Fortner and his is a talent to be reckoned with. 74 thumbs-up has to say something, surely?
But I garuntee you he is bit pretentious, it's like a reverse psychology thing lol jazz musicians have every right to be jaded given the current state popular music lmao
Sullivan is the man!
@@itmsjim also we're here commenting and he was there playing lol
Piano player was SMACKIN
sullivan fortner bro !
Sullivan Fortner
bass player: *epic bass line*
trumpet player: *combos w/ sax*
sax player: *combos w/ trumpet*
drum player: *epic beats*
piano player: *SMACKETY SLAP SLAP*
Did the bassist adjust his playing so it fitted with the audience's off beat clapping?
nah. the drum brought them back in time
😂
That was brutal in the bridge the audience was so out but then he modulates the piano solo rhythm to fit the crowd and that's why these guys are some of the best in the world.
can't stop rewatching this
I have never heard you lovely musical beasties ever, until tonight! You are fecking ace!!!!
Roy Hargrove and Joshua Redman we’re both recipients of the National Association of Jazz fellowship. I saw them both play fresh out of high school. Great players.
Wow they played that with a ton of energy
if you want to see energy watch the recording from 05
The snare sound has power energy
God damn that 2007 recording deleted again?? FFS I NEED IT
Same !
yeah where is it!
X3
its necessary for our well being goddamnit
czcams.com/video/kbNlVnSrahI/video.html I found the 2007 version (just audio, no video) !!
Standing outside of Tower Records near Juilliard, I was blessed to meet this man before "The Roy Hargrove" arrived and my good friend Tichina Vaughn told me, hey you would not believe he has two records in there. He was the nicest young man, not pretentious, but humble. He was in a valley time, but truly blessed. God needed him more than us, but I will miss him! R.I.P. Roy. Play for Jesus and our Lord. He will say you are one of my best creations.
No matter how Roy changes up this song, Justin follows, fills in, brings the melody forward. They truly were a remarkable pair, more like brothers than band mates.
I was blessed to have first seen Roy on the North Sea Jazz Cruise in 2007. He performed with his group and Marcus Miller (the host) on the ship. Roy blow the house down at the Ahoy Center in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The venue had a full house. It was interesting because in Europe, young folk are really into jazz. Since that time I've heard him on the West Coast, DC and New York. I never got tired of listening to Roy. He was a giant. RIP!
That piano player earned his check for fighting the crowd’s clapping
Never heard a double bass played with such groove and finesse
Only a select few will understand this!
Every week I come back to this video.... thank you Roy for introducing me to this wonderful world called Jazz.
Magic Piano. Very interesting approach. Powerfull soulful Roy
That piano run at 3:18 was sublime
Yassss!
Hell yeah my guy WAS practicing Santeria!!
This concert is priceless for me R.I.P Roy
Roy...you weren't here long enough! Love your music my brotha...Rest in Power!
That contrabass beats my heart ♥️
This is legit the first time a solo brought me a tear. Im talking abt the piano solo. Amazing how even the audience couldnt keep up. I need lessons from him.
Awfully hard to play this- with a different approach-when the original was: perfect. RIP Roy. Ty for so much joy.
Already becoming a modern standard
Already becoming a classic standard!!
The two horn harmony with the sax going down chromatically at 2:50 made me shed ONE righteous tear 😢
You had me at the first snare hit. Dang that drummer sounds good.
One of de best genius musician....Amazing!!!...RIP ROY....thanks for your talent....
R.I.P I remember playing this song a few years back. He was an absolute legend
2019 and this still move me. These brothers are astonishingly brilliant. Roy's sound remains iconic in the music world, not just my beloved jazz. Roy was, and still remains, a genius, RIP Roy; an AMAZING artist; a PHENOMENAL musician.
Had no idea Roy passed!! What an awesome inspiring player. This band sounded great.
I still miss Roy Hargrove keep back to here for listening his playing every year.
That Ole Fashion Kitchen Chair is Killer!! I love this Group now!!
Roy, another Dallas legend. My late wife, Shirley McFatter, jazz diva, introduced him out of Booker T Washington HS (photo on my channel Joe McFatter). Roy is a very humble, straight ahead cat, had a brief chance to meet him some years ago after fame set in.
Joe, I attended Roy Hargrove's introduction at the State Fair Music Hall in Dallas. And, Jon Faddis was there to add support. It was a great way to start a career.
I'm also sorry to see that your wife Shirley McFatter passed away. She was truly a jazz diva.
Richard E., trumpet and bass.
Roy was a regal roi. Miss him so much
Makes me cry almost every time i watch it and the New Morning Club set
The attitude of it all!!!! 🥰🥰🎺🎺🎺🥁🎹🎹🎹
Roy, you're missed so much. God bless you.
This piece was so good when he was alive after he passed away it's still amazing and I still listening this piece everyday but it sounds sometimes so sad..
This one deserves to be in vynal format 🌈🎊🎉🌊🤞🏾🤞🏾🤞🏾
Great Roy!!! Thanks for your music....RIP
There's no replacing Roy. As the years move on, his importance will surely magnify. R.I.P.
just 5 dudes chilling making amazing music. Dig it!
They got the groove! Like you can tell the quintet was tight af
I have never seen more confident guys and they pulled it off wow
Today I’ve sleep early 10:00 PM
Me at 3:30 AM:
3:00 Roy legit was just like “aight im boutta head out” 💀💀
That chemistry 👌🏿👌🏿
Holy crap!!! That tune was inspired...lots of pocket.
RIP Roy. Your beautiful tunes live on.
Goodnight Roy. I hope you’re singing out over the clouds with the rest of the greats.
The trumpet Guy is so good that on one take he plays a gig without having the trumpet in his mouth POG
a magical jazz standard and an amazing jazz line-up very and cool free improvisation 🎶🎶🎶👪👋👏👏👏😉
The greats always seem to die too young. Rest well Roy. Your legacy is in tact
The day that I first saw this video, the piano player (Sullivan Fortner) became my favorite piano player in the world. The quintet played so beautifully together. They all played with passion, and gave it their all.
sem palavras, sem palavras....
Clayton's playing on the 2007 Paris performance is definitive.
I just love how the drummer was mocking the audience after the piano solo
RIP Roy loved this track ever since my ears heard it.
Great music and what a great snare drum sound.
Bloody awesome musicians,! Playing and goofing off with each and keeping the cool groove! Niiiiice!
リズムややこしすぎてお客さんが全くついていけてない笑

its a different arrangement, different musicians, stop comparing .
Amen. Music is an art, not a science. People are permitted to have different versions. Don’t listen to the Jazz Police in this comment section.
SEMPLICEMENTE MAGNIFICA!!
jazz lovers never forget your music!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! genius !!!!!
that piano player has some Monk in him!!!!
More melodious
Edit : Monk's rythms and fat bass drops, but almost Eromm Garner's chords :)
Art Tatum, not Monk (in this version anyway)...
As every jazz piano players hehe
Yeah man, you should check his rendition of I mean you
Words will never do enough justice to describe the totally awesome, incredible, beautiful and inspirational talent that Roy had and was humble enough to share with us ! We have been truly blessed and need seek no more. Thank you Roy, love from Stan Bennett and his Jazz men.
There is nothing like This Sound!!!!!!!!!
Sullivan’s solo is always playing in the back of my head
Came for Hargrove, but stayed for Fortner !
Emocionada sempre 😍😍❤️❤️
Thanks for providing the colour to so many wonderful memories. We are blessed to have had you with us. R.I.P. Mr. Hargrove.
i got to play this on upright for the first time at my friends house. never played bass before that, ik it sucked and i got a blister on my index finger but i'll never forget that day, circa 11:12 PM · Mar 30, 2024 !
Wow, what an amazing bunch of jazz musicians. I particularly fell in awe with the crazy run-lick at 3:18 and the backbeat motif at 4:47 (which he shifts even by 1 semitone) - Just amazing :D
Came for Hargrove, but stayed for Fortner !
3:36 the block chords are so beautiful!
夜小白 best comment lol
Following these cats 4 a while💯
In the beginning the piano backs up the bass perfectly. This is how you know they’re good.
The bass player is epic!!!
This rendition is so exquisite it brings me to tears every time I watch it.
Can't fed up with this song. Just amazing.
baru ketemu di internet 3 hari yang lalu, langsung suka, kagum. dan ternyata udah ga ada.. God Love You So Much Roy!
