  • Often referred to as “Picketts Charge of the West” The battle of Franklin was one of the worst disasters of the war for the Confederate States Army. Confederate Lieutenant General John Bell Hood's Army of Tennessee conducted numerous frontal assaults against fortified positions occupied by the Union forces under Major General John Schofield. The Confederate assault of six infantry divisions containing eighteen brigades with 100 regiments numbering almost 20,000 men, resulted in devastating losses to the men and the leadership of the Army of Tennessee. Fourteen Confederate generals (six killed, seven wounded, and one captured) and 55 regimental commanders were casualties. Lets explore this battle through the very words of the men who fought at Franklin.

    The Carnton Plantation and the cemetery they created for the honored Southern dead is amazing. A very strong family in the war of northern aggression.

    This was a short battle lasting only a few hours, yet the casualties were extremely high. I wonder if, from a time (hour) to casualty ratio, if Franklin was the worst/bloodiest battle of the Civil War? Antietam was the bloodiest single day battle, true, but it lasted all day...

    • @ProjectPast1565
      @ProjectPast1565  Před 4 měsíci +2

      Yes, I believe it was 5hrs total. It’s definitely possible it was the bloodiest hours of the war. A lot of the veterans that survived said the death at Franklin was on a different level.

    The 44th Missouri came from the smallest pounionist area of Missouri. North of the proconfederate Little Dixie was the low % slave populated Iowa border stripe area, the 44th Missouri infantry regiments came from this area. This shows the Civil War's root case well. The Little Dixie the highest % slave populated area in Missouri was proconfederate majority area and the other low % slave populated areas were prounionist majority areas as the Iowa border stripe area, St Lous area and the Ozark region area.

    The map you used is incorrect. It lists 184th Ohio Inf which should be the 183rd.

      I see both regiments listed on the map west of the Columbia pike.
