  • I rewatched the 1969 pilot and realized how it had many scenes similar to Part 1's opening so I took clips that matched each other and see how they compared. It's clear they used it as a basis for the opening for Part I and used a few parts for some scenes in Part I as well. Here are some things I found interesting while making this video
0:09 to 0:11 - biggest differences here are just aesthetics for Part I except for Lupin's face which is the same from 1969. Thought it was funny.
0:16 to 0:17 - Very surprised to see that they swapped Lupin for Pycal for that scene.
0:36 to 0:41 - in the 1969 version it shows a scene of Jigen shooting the door to which the man who got shot behind it, opens it and falls down. They had a very similar scene to this in the 1977 opening for Lupin The III Part II where Fujiko fires an assault rifle (maybe submachine gun) at a man through the door to which he also falls down.
0:50 to 0:54 - Fujiko in both version are wearing (nearly?) the same dress with a montage of an assortment of images in the background while she dances, guess it was pretty hypnotic to use for a bond girl like character.
1:09 to 1:12 - Goemon had darker skin in the 1969 pilot compared to part I. I'm not sure as to why they made the change. Same can be said for Jigen and Zenigata although Zenigata's part I counterpart had darker skin than the 1969 but went lighter in skin tone as the series went on (with some variations here and there). Thought this was interesting to point out.
1:13 to 1:22 - Almost the exact same scene except Lupin is swapped with Pycal in Part I. and no bomb is thrown in the car like in the 1969 pilot.
1:23 to 2:02 - almost beat for beat. On the right it is episode 8 from part I where Lupin and the gang escape Zenigata and Mr. Gold with Lupin disguising himself as Mr. Gold to tie the human sized kite to the jeep and get away. In the 1969 pilot the gang escapes, minus Goemon who was trying to fight Lupin at that time, with Lupin disguising himself as Kogorō Akechi and doing the exact same thing in Part I.
Very cool to see these scenes and moments side by side.

The 4x3 version of the pilot is a little wide than I remembered.
By the way pretty sweet and chill rendition of the Part One/Lupin Zero’s closing song you find for this video.

Not gonna lie I honestly prefer Lupin, Jigen, Fujiko and Zenigata's character designs from the 1969 pilot film more then the ones used in both the Part 1 and Part 2 anime series

I wouldn't mind seeing a small Lupin OVA or a movie in that style. Harkens back to an old cartoon look without it looking too cartoony if you know what I mean.

@@StillJohnDoeAgain Yeah I get what you mean, also I've been wondering for a while why TMS has never thought of doing an animated Lupin movie or 12 episode OVA in Monkey Punch's detailed but cartoony artstyle
