Transfagarasan - mountain road in the Carpathian Mountains, connecting the Romanian region of Transylvania and Wallachia and passing through the mountain range of Fagaras.

This track is the highest mountain road in Romania and one of the ten major attractions of the country.
The highway was built in just 4 years (1970 to 1974) for military purposes. Construction was carried out mostly by forces and means of the Romanian army. The reason for the creation of such an ambitious project was the invasion of Warsaw Pact troops in Czechoslovakia in 1968. Like many other large-scale projects, construction Transfagarasan hugely expensive: just dynamite had been spent 6,000 tons. Not without casualties - on road construction killed 40 people.

Coming from the reservoir to the pass road is serpentine, walking through the woods. The most interesting thing starts at the entrance to the pass, over 30 km of winding thin strip of asphalt winds along the slopes of the Carpathians.

In summer, the lake can be reached by Transfagarasan highway, in other seasons - the cable car that starts near Balea waterfall. In 2006, the first in Eastern Europe, the ice hotel was built next to the lake. His erect each winter from the ice blocks of the Lake with a small church. Today this road is considered one of the most beautiful roads in the world and is one of the landmarks of Romania. Alpine lakes and waterfalls, incredible streamers, menacing rocks and mountains, is one of the largest dams in the world - there is something to see. In its vicinity are also Romanian and other attractions Poenari Fortress (. Room Poienari), also known as the residence of Vlad Dracula.
The track is open 2-3 months a year, as a rule - from July to mid-September. This indicator is very conditional and depends primarily on the weather and the will of local authorities.
