I used to record the songs off Yo MTV Raps on my toy tape recorder when I was nine years old. X Clan, Public Enemy, Geto Boys, 3rd Bass, & Ice Cube's records where the coolest thing that I could imagine. I'd sit & study the album covers, & listen all day long. That's why it pisses me off to see the culture taken over by corporations, & to see the art form treated strictly as a business. This music means more to some of us then most people can understand, this is a huge part of what shaped our ideas about life, & who we are as Men. These underground cats are the only ones still holding on to what we once had. Once ILL BiLL & the rest hang it up, Hip-hop is officially Dead & Gone.
There is still great rap out there, it's just rarely well funded, so the production value isn't always high.
(With some exceptions)
Of course, it also depends on what style you want, both regarding lyrics and music!
If you can handle rap that attacks religion, I'll recommend you listen to Syqnys featuring Greydon Square with Hurt You, (Grand Unified)
If you want political rap, look for B Dolan, RTJ, Sage Francis, Rebel Diaz, Dead Prez, Immortal Technique etc.
If you wanna hear something very different, (still political), check out A Tribe Called Red.
If you want someone a bit different, who can juggle words like few others, check out Scroobious Pip
Fuck, bro, I never thought of that shit of course it is cuz we don't' see any young lyrical beasts holdin' it down like these guys. I mean, the newest lyrical giant is so possessed by money I have a hard time telling if he even loves what he does and he's a baby rookie not even past "regional" as an artists for long. He seems to be like some of the other "independents" who think they are real artists because they didn't sign a deal forgetting that when money is goal #1 (rather than the love for their art) pop culture father's their music same as the corporations do and as we have all seen pop culture makes some shitty ass hip hop (if you can even call it that). I can't name one young artist or otherwise who appreciates or even knows that the culture is held down by a group of underground cats with no predecessors. That's sad to consider cuz you're right it's inevitable.
They literally changed the game for specific reasons to make Eminem successful and the only known spitter while black rappers are left to look by bafoons.trust me bro it's by design .they want an entire generation to believe em is the best to ever do it while all these other top notch lyricists gotta grind in Europe

I knew I was going to hear some fire when I saw Snowgoons, Reef, and Sicknature. But that actually totally surpassed what I even thought. Reef and Sicknature both came in sick because what I loved the most was that beat. Straight fiiiiiiiire. I am glad Reef and Sicknature got on this beat because they at least did it proper justice.
