A long time ago, I used to make a living playing guitar. For about two years, I used guitar picks made from agate.

    • @rb032682
      @rb032682 Před 3 lety +1

@brainbah - It sounded great, IF I maintained the proper technique. There was no "click" from the pick, on electric and acoustic. It felt very smooth, and very stiff. They shattered very easily if dropped onto the heavy base of an old Atlas mic stand. I also had a jeweler drill holes in some of the picks to put them on gold chains.
I did break a hellofa lot of strings with agate picks. I went back to thin plastic picks when I retired from my mediocre guitar career. lol
I never was very good at maintaining "proper technique".

Hmm... seeing the agates in the basalt reminds me of a patch of rock in north Jersey on a mountain that I noted 20 years ago was severely tilted from its original stratification. The southern half was mostly sedimentary and schist. The middle was metamorphosed rocks, quartz intrusions and granite, and the north face was mostly basalt. I recall the basalt being full of holes.... and I remember where that particular mountain is located! I will have to make a trip back there.

I found many meteorites throughout the years mostly in the Southwestern parts of the US and from central Canada moving towards the Western parts of our country. Never found a meteorite in my home province of NB yet. I also search for micrometeorites and have found 100's of specimens here in NB and abroad. I just subcribed to your channel and love watching you prospect for gold and gems. Man, it looks like your having fun. BC has got to be "Rock Heaven" and a geological playground. One thing that's cool about meteorite hunting is that you learn alot about rocks and minerals because most of everything you find out there is a meteorwrong. I hunt Agates around lake superior in Michigan once a year or so, amazed how easily your basalt breaks apart. Also agate isn't the name of the gemstone, it's a type of chalcedony mixed with quartz. And basically they are all geodes with the only difference being if it filled in solid or not.

Dan, I want to thank you for this video. One its informative and gave me some ideas on places to look for agates that have like type of host materials . A place I did not think of to ever look.
Secondly, I watch a lot of rock hounding and the like type videos and visit I don't know how many channels just to support or learn thing...in that I found a particular channel that the person who made the content was a fraud and a charlatan in what he claimed were his real finds, real content and whatever else. I started to call him out on it and recieved some backlash from some other viewers who were and are being fooled by his content as if it is real and not just planted and fakery all around.
After dealing with these people I said I would find a few good CZcamsrs who are posting real content of rock hounding type content..so they can see what it really looks like..compare them. I am definitely going to recommend and share your channel to these people.
The content creator of this other channel I speak of portrays his finds as agates and crystals and gemstones and its always clean and shiney and soo perfect pieces coming right out of the host material.. and that is never the case.
Like you, in this video ..it demonstrates how agates and the like are actually found and how they appear and look in host materials..what the host material looks like..how dirty it is..and most important how not so shiney and perfect they are not coming out of the host material directly..
So thank you.. I do not like deceptive people, especially ones who make it a point to make a profit off others.. hopefully in sharing your videos I can help get this other guys content taken down or stop him from taking advantage of people and making money off them by being so deceptive and false..by selling fake items.
And yes...he has been selling items he claims are real .. he took a lady for several hundred dollars for what after convincing her to get the material stone tested..ended up being some sort of glass material not a gem stone.
I love your content...and hopefully someday I can arrange to get some of that beautiful picture stone you have.. rough pieces for making some jewelry. I absolutely love that magnificent blues pieces that you have ..that is some very beautiful grade pieces.

    cool!
although, the mostly clear translucent stuff is chalcedony.
So what's the difference between agate and chalcedony?
well first, it's the same base mineral, quartz, but it's not the nice crystal kind, it's got much finer crystals, some would call jasper, agate and chalcedony a micro-crystalline quartz.
so what is the difference between those 3, jasper, agate and chalcedony?
    transparency.
chalcedony can be almost clear, jasper however is very opaque, while agate is in between the two and often has bands or patches of chalcedony in it. some fancy jaspers, agates/whatever's often have a mix of all 3 of those, and can include druzy quartz crystals too, at this point it's up to the individual to assume which kind is most abundant in the material if they give a coprolite.
