- The Pyramid of Cholula is the largest pyramid in the world and located just more over 6 km west of the city of Puebla in Mexico. It’s not as tall as the Great Pyramid of Egypt, but it’s footprint is almost 3 times the size, measuring 300 by 315 metres, meaning the volume is far greater.

The fun fact there was that, when Conquistadors arrived there they thought that it was a mountain/hill. That means when Spaniards arrived there the site is already abandoned or deteriorating.

I think what you’re missing here is the fact that on the apex of that massive pyramid Spanish conquistadors built a small cathedral to stifle the old religion. that Cathedral is now protected! Excavating the hundreds and tons of earth that has accumulated around the pyramid and on top would surely Destroy that tiny cathedral that’s holding some sort of value for Catholicism. It’s what the nation wants to do about the archaeological excavation of the pyramid which probably holds plenty of secrets since it’s five pyramids built over one another…
I thought La Danta was the largest pyramid so I guess you learn something new every day.
Then again, La Danta is built on a originally natural hill they shaped up so so it is possible that it depends how you count.
In either case it is certainly a fascinating marvel of engineering. :)
LA Danta IS BY FAR the largest. The "footprint" is the size of downtown L.A.

Um. But is it really the largest pyramid in the world? From the primary scientific sources I could find (which were few and far between), even using the largest dimensions found for the platform the complex sits on and extrapolating that to the largest height given for pyramid...it still isnt the largest pyramid. So what gives?

Actually the largest 4 sided pyramid is in Visoko, Bosnia.

It will take a while until mainstream archeology accepts that. As much as I respect Graham Hancock and his work, Semir Osmanagic is the greatest pyramidologist today.
The Bosnian pyramid is a natural hill. If they think it’s not I suggest they excavated from his Apex till they find Masonary stones which I still have a lot to do over 40 years.
