A strong start to the second Stargate series. But slowly lost its drive with several of the characters. Where did they go wrong, where did they go right. And some ideas in fixing the series from its problems.

Nothing, they decided to do Universe which went in a totally different direction from the rest of the franchise and crashed it. Would have gladly taken one more season of Atlantis over the two seasons of Universe.

Apparently the writers didn't know what to do with Ford so they just wrote his character off the show. Also, apparently the producers loved the actress who played Jennifer Keller who seriously didn't fit the show at all.
Despite all it's misgivings, I still enjoyed Atlantis. At least it felt like Stargate to me unlike Universe which was completely different.

Not trying to call out the writers or production team or whatever, but even back when the shows were being produced it was clear they were hitting a mental wall when it came to women leaders; it's like "just write them like you'd write Hammond or Oneill or T'ealc, dummies, Carter and Weir aren't incomprehensible beings from another planet they're people, just write them like people." But the writers opted for ignoring, or sidelining, or making them awkward incomprehensible beings. It's not like, dastardly evil of the writers, it was just a mild failing, a stumble, a little misogyny as a treat.

The second to last episode where the alternate universe Shepard is a las vegas detective hunting an alien, and that alien sending the signal that tells the Wraith where Earth is, that was pretty cool. Also "the last man" episode with Shepard zipping forward thru time, they were clearly having fun making these. There were some small redeeming moments.

If McKay ever got a gf in show it should've been Cadman.
She's been in Rodney's head before and knows how he thinks, and doesn't deal with his emotions. They could've slowly grown closer over several episodes without realizing it, eating lunch and talking in the hallways goes to hanging out in the labs or firing range goes to looking for each other in emergencies sort of thing. She could've helped him with his emotional issues/ego and he could've helped her with any number of things since we didn't get much in show info about her.
Yes she had a crush on Beckett in S2 but it didn't work out since their first kiss was technically McKay and Carson, not Cadman and Carson, so that's already dealt with.

My problem with Stargate Atlantis is that the other planets are NOT interesting . In sg1 the goa'ulds were out there cobtrolling planets and the asgards were out there , and the planets felt more interesting than the sg command center . In Stargate atlantis the city itself is more interesting than the galaxy. I would gave liked it if : atlantis flies and they use it as a space station and they help other planets build ships and fight back . The wraith are not as interesting as the goa'ulds

Yeah, I have no idea how Stargate Atlantis ended up being so rushed, and so convoluted with so many ignored characters. A potential 40+ episodes could’ve saved the cast, and plot, but, it unfortunately never happened. At any rate, another excellent review. Maybe you could review “Angels In The Outfield” for a future FTV video (though I don’t remember if I already suggested it before), and a future WWW review on ether live-action “Ghost Rider” film, or even a mixture of both if possible.

I watched all years of SG1 and Atlantis when they aired. I was never thinking out of all of them Ronon Dex would make it big. I shunned SGU because I was angry they canceled SG1 and Atlantis and never gave it a chance. Watched it recently (within last 2y) and was surprised that it was the best Stargate of them all. What killed Stargate? The aholes at Scifi and MGM. And they prevented anyone else from continuing it. Horrible people. SG1 had another 5 seasons left in it, Atlantis had another 6-8 easy and Universe could have run for another 8 seasons had they played all their cards right and had smarter people running the handling of this awesome IP. They could have made games, merch, movies (TV and Theater) and had video games and cartoons etc.
But no. Instead of watering it and growing it making billions, they killed it all. (Anyone who disses SGU imo is not a fan of Stargate and doesn't understand what SG is. They're just fanboys and not true fans)

I think they wrote the show season to season based on how fans and crew/staff liked the characters, actors storylines etc. Ford out of everyone , just didnt have charisma , that on camera presence that every other main character and top back ground characters had. Kudos to them for the bold writing of a main character breaking bad. several times they had the fake out of it in SG1 but right when we thought nah it could never happen, they made one turn and stay bad.
I think the show just didnt deviate from the wraith enough, bringing in replicators was just able to prolong the show enough but they should have written out new mysteries.. like maybe some species on the other side of the galaxy was able to find a way to beat the wraith and keep them out of a quarter or more of the galaxy and SGA needs to try and find out how they did it and why its so hard to find them... finding new enemies and allies in the process. the story just seemed to be all wraith all the time.

Something that always bothers me about a the Stargate Cinematic Universe was the recycling of actors. Elizabeth’s fiancé…yeah, he was the Tolan (can’t remember his name) that Samantha gave Schrödinger the cat to. The Tolan were wiped out by the Goa’uld, so he’s supposed to be dead. Todd the wraith was the same actor as the Athosian children’s father.

In a perfect world 2 teams rotating stories would be good but unfortunately that takes so much planning ahead they couldnt have done it because contracts were already made and team 2 would want more money from being focal points in more episodes while you're then over paying the main characters by them not being main characters in as many episodes. contracts and actors demands have gotten in the way of what writers , producers, and directors have envisioned in shows and movies so many times you tend to understand how drugs and booze are so common in the profession just to deal with the BS lol

I loved the show and watched it for its characters, mostly McKay. I never understood, why they got rid of beloved characters for no good reason, not even with much emotional impact. I loved the addition of Woolsey, but felt Higginson worked way better in the show than Tapping and Becket was more interesting than Keller. But the storylines were in general a bit dodgy and too repetitive… how many times can you free someone from a hiveship, how many times can you get taken hostage by the Genii, how many times can you not kill Michael… I felt they never got on with the important stuff, like getting ZPMs or getting organized against the Wraith. I really think the writing was too unfocused the whole 5 seasons over. They wrote great characters, but lousy plots.

The problem with SGA is they were getting good in season 4-5 when Todd and Michael, Woolsey Even Teyla the Wraith queen gave Teyla something to do.
Before Michael and Todd the wraith were nameless replaceable
    I think Michael had potential.
He was smart, determined, deadly and more importantly he was a monster SGA created. Michael is the victim the team kidnapped him and experimented on him. Twice. More Michael had access to Atlantis database. He could have access to the list of planets with zpms or the time dilation cave. With those he could have accelerated his experiments like what happened to the replicators.

Exactly! I felt that way somewhere around season 4 and definitely 5, although I'm sure there were signs of it much earlier.
Did you also get the impression that while the characters got some development (McKay mostly), it gets reset in the next episode?
SGA had so much potential that just went down the drain.
The Wraith are one of my favorite races in Stargate, but they were so one-dimensional and inconsistently written. They were almost intelligent and frightening enemies one moment and complete idiots the next. I also felt that the Wraith needed more characters like Todd and, to a lesser extent, Michael, just to give them some much needed complexity.
All in all, I agree with most of what you've said.

The Wraith backstory killed the show. The Wraith did not have the potential to wipe out the Ancients. Period. If they did SG-A would never have been able to stand up to them. It was in my opinion just used to spit on canon SG-1 from the new, arrogant and partially clueless production core. The Asgards said they could not decipher or digest all the knowledge of the Ancients and over thousands of years only achieved a small portion of Ancient technology.
The Wraith could have easily came after the Ancients were gone all being ascended or traveling through the universe or finally succumbing to the plague even they couldn't cure. No plot holes. Instead they spit on the lore of SG-1 and ruined the show.

I agree, but if i had to justify how the wraith could defeat the ancients it would be this:
      The ancients have special powers.
      The wraiths consume the ancients.
The wraith get the special powers from this.
As they consume more, they become more powerful.
Meanwhile, some ancients science experiment goes wrong and makes them sterile.
Wraith get stronger, ancients get weaker.
After ancients disappear, wraiths eventually descend in power to their original levels.

Nothing was wrong with Stargate Atlantis at all. Brad Wright wanted to dump Atlantis to Do Battlestar Stargate (Universe). Atlantis should have gone on for at least two more years. We should have gotten more SG-1 movies. The producer's especially Wright talked about Universe as if it was the best thing he had ever done with everything before Universe was something to scrape off ones shoes. Something new and completely different doesn't always work. They took the show down every possible wrong path.
Nothing could improve universe at all. The characters were not likeable or even easy to relate to. They could kill off the entire cast and it wouldn't change the watchability of the show one iota. Yes Atlantis wasn't perfect but in sure in hell was better than Atlantis it's worst. What could have been will never be. The producer's ego caused this mess.....such a wasteful shameful event for such a fine series.

I just got done seeing episode 9 of Atlantis and gave up on it. I remember when it was new I never finished season one. I also hated SGU. SG1 was the only series I liked of the franchise.

I'm not to familiar with the series just watching it a few times barley again in my first decade from SG1 to UNI killing off Becket was real dumb and really really dumb writing off Weir I remembered differently that Carter and Richard Woosley just had to take over for whatever in seasons 4/5 and that Keller was just helping Becket that would of been WAAAAAY more fitting even a child could write in those characters that way simply but as you said the writers were bored I guess

Total agreement. SGU was horrid. Dude. Ronin's planet was destroyed by the Wraith. A wraith team member? Teal'c retread.

    • @rangerreview1780
      @rangerreview1780  Před rokem +1

It's not totally the same. Teal'c was one of the Gould's servants. I think it would have given more episodes to Ronin. That was my thought process. He had that awkwardness at Atlantis. If you bring in a Wraith. Now you have to deal with that. And Obviously they can't bring a Wraith on main missions. So they wouldn't be apart of the main team.
Than I also thought about a Wraith. So that prove the character turned to good. Help with Ford. Cure him. Bring him back to the show. As a on and off character. Fill those episodes with those type of ideas. Instead of doing the 20th McKay episode.

Dude really needs to chill. The only point he got right was that the city itself as a character was underused. By all means, have teams going through the stargate looking for ZPM's but don't ignore the incredible discoveries to be made right at your feet. SCI-FI channel canceled Atlantis, for whatever reason they had a bad habit of terminating shows with a five year run. Making SGU was a big mistake. stick to the two shows that are on the air, taking time, resources and writing talent away to create a third came at a cost. Tried to watch SGU but after a few episode there wasn't a single character That I found remotely likeable.

  • @michaelsmiley15
    @michaelsmiley15 Před 2 lety

What went wrong quite a bit actually
The writing on stargate for all of the series was not very consistent
They were borrowing concepts from various Science fiction TV series
People left the show that oh that they should have done whatever they could to keep them on the show because when that happened that happened the whole dynamic changes
The other problem is that you had people joining the show After it had been on several years all of a sudden mcgiver leaves the show and you have these 2 rejects from far escape show up
To reject that are not very good actors it does not work for me
They did the same thing on stargate Atlantis you have the doctor from star trek voyager show up on SG1 and they continue that character which to me all it did was get in the way then you have the doctor leave the show and you had the engineer from Firefly show up
Then dr wier dies and all of a sudden the doctor from star trek voyager is now the head of the Atlantis expedition
The one character that they needed to do without because it really didn't work for me was Rodney mckay he got in the way the character really wasn't that smart just doesn't work
I did not do not and will not like the concept of them using borg and calling them replicators on any stargate TV series I don't like it it's stupid
The only good thing about stargate Atlantis for me was it gave Jason mamoa his big break

Besides the painfully glaring plot holes:
      Everyone spoke English.
Goa'uld technology could wipe out cities but never hit a human sized target or kill a main character if they did.
For some reason SG-1 never thought of procuring shields for themselves and modifying them.

I love Atlantis. Miss it so much. Ive never wished a TV show to be real as much as Atlantis. Yep still obsessed. Wish I lived there as was part of the crew. Michael is like the Titanic. i always wish Michael could have stayed good. Absolutely loved Todd. Gha, i wish they could bring it back. Even if it were CGI at first, then age the characters later as they are now. Yes, they wound be past the age of retirement, but I dont care. That's why it's called Science FICTION.

  • @teshtishtoshtesh3218

The Wraith were a mistake right out of the gate. Space emo-rock hand-vampires veered too far into schlocky horror to be entertaining. The city of Atlantis is awesome, but the writers were trying too hard to make the IP darker, edgier, sexier. SGU took that misstep and quadrupled down on it, making something worse than the nonsense self-parody from "200". They wanted so badly to be BSG that it killed the franchise. SG-1 was loved for what it brought to the table that *wasn't* nihilistic dark sci-fi. I've no idea why they thought being as dumb as the rest of the playing field would be the way forward for them.

it feels like they used up all the good ideas of exploring weird places for the main series and what was left in atlantis is just going through countryside forests and visiting same old plain pre industrial villages with 30% of the villages being a cover up for a bit more advanced hidden civilization... boring AF...
