George Lynch in a Tribute to Eddie Van Halen - Dallas International Guitar Festival 2021

- Right in the middle of a cool spontaneous jam, George starts playing an improvised intro a Van Halen classic. Watch the looks exchanged by the rhythm section as they realize, and adjust.
This was just one of several really cool moments during a killer and unique set by George at the Dallas Guitar Festival.
Much more to come...stay tuned!
**This is only a quick(very rough) edit for the purpose of getting levels. I am releasing this rough edit due to so many requests.** - Hudba
Subscribers to my channel tend to like guitarists who are confident enough take risks. They usually prefer an element of danger to the live performances that they watch. To watch or listen to a performance that sounds "just like the record", is to be VERY bored, from what I know about most of my subscribers.
******To clarify....This was a one-off gig with a local rhythm section, used just for this single performance. There was NO rehearsal, no set list, and I am fairly certain that George had not played live in over a year. Any practicing they had hoped to do never took place!********
From my experiences in similar situations, I believe that most other guitarists of this stature would have simply cancelled the gig. But, a pro like George is confident enough to improvise his way through, and not get stressed out if thing aren't "perfect".
Think about it. If this had been a Malmsteen gig, Yngwie would have stopped in the middle of the first song, thrown the guitar at the drummer(again), and then blamed the guitar tech!!
I was there, and saw the whole gig. George explained that he just arrive to Dallas, he was coming from Nashville, he was in the road for a few weeks traveling around the country, he had a set list done over the phone while he was driving, well, it didn't happened, he had literally no time to practice any of the songs, he wanted to play deep purple, led zeppelin, etc. So, he played for an hour a improvised set list with two guys that helped up in that moment. I think it was awesome and his commitment to be there it says it all
Spot on!!!!✌✌✌✌✌
Yep and when i saw Yngwie at "Day on the Green" he was having total TECHNICAL problems i.e. he would be jamming away and BAMM amplifiers go pop (loud sound) well some people claimed they heard the amps go POP but it seemed to me as if the amp just blew and basically No Sound! He's shredding for approx 30-45 seconds and THERE'S NO SOUND! 1000's of people like WTF? he's jamming but no sound? then some dude walks out and says, bare with us folks, just a technical issue give Yngwie a second TY he said as Yngwie is looking around following wires from o guess Head to speakers and he was very. PISSED OFF can you understand? then after a minute Yngwie was back in buisiness then he>>> FRIGGIN SHREDDED BEYOND REALITY OMG!!! Yngwie kicks ass! (But Eddie Van Halen is my master of coarse!!!
There's a difference between 'taking chances' and playing Mr Scary without a pick. Or trying to play the guitar with gloves on. He used to be a monster, but now the dude is way out there. Probably should get his prescription filled more often.
This is soooooooo well put!!!!!!!!
When you hear George Lynch you know who it is. That says a lot in the world of guitar. He's a legend along with Randy Rhoads, EVH, Jake E. Lee, Warren D Martini. That's a great class to be in right there and George is in it. He's great... love his style and songs.
Well you sure as fuck couldn’t tell from this performance, so why’d you bring it up?
Come on mate this could be anyone. That only happens with guitarists like evh, Angus Young, slash and some more. He always sounded great but is not unique as the ones mentioned.
His phrasing is unique
@@sorewreckedum3002 I think you need to listen to him a lot to find his playing unique. I mean compared to the ones I've mentioned before
Don't forget Mick Mars.
Crazy to think that Lynch, Rhodes and Eddie all came up together on the Sunset strip back in the 70’s. I remember reading how George used to go watch Van Halen in the clubs and would be so frustrated by Eds skill he’d want to destroy his guitar and take up a new profession. Im glad he stuck with it. He has a sound all his own.
There’s a really good video about them at that time 3 of the best guitarist all coming out of the same area at the same time. Check it out it’s really good 🤙✌️
This is actually 100% true . George was extremely pissed and thought Eddie was from another planet entirely ha ha ha
@@markrosenquist8259 Can you point us to the video. It sounds cool.
There is absolutely, NO, WAY, Eddie is not smiling right there on stage with George. George captured what made him, Ed, and every other metal meister the legends they are. Great playing, not being afraid to improvise, beholden to no one, respect for one another, always giving us fans, at least us true fans, something we never saw coming that kept us wanting more. And just when we thought we had it all, they came back at us with something new we wondered how we lived without. If there's one thing that can be said about legends like George and Ed, who were buds starting out, is they were never afraid to revinvent themselves, add a little here, a little there, take us on a little journey, always in a way that they minute they started playing, whether it was the sound, the style, or just something deep in your soul.... you knew it was them. Man, are we lucky to have grown up with such great musicians. Sure, generations before us had Richie Blackmore, Robin Trower, Hendrix, Cheap Trick and his unlimited bag of tricks, so many greats. But we metal heads sure have one heck of a portfolio of great guitarists for the years. Would be interesting to lay em out side by side. On one side. Beck, Iommi, Frampton, West... on the other Rhoads, Zakk, the Def Lep guys pick your era doesn't matter they stand solid, Malmsteen, etc. etc. etc. And that doesn't even get into the bands. Yes and Queensryche. Blue Oyster Cult and White Lion. Queen and Extreme. Creedence and The Cult. Bands that spanned the decades like AC DC, Judas Priest. It just doesn't get any better than that.
Lynch has such a nasty vibrato! One of a kind player.
One you put into your.........
Well said , whole solo woodlum....
John Sykes, Gary Moore and George Lynch. The vibrato gods 😊
And Pul Gilbert :)
@@stratsamelting John Sykes for sure brother!!
Honoring EVH by doing it his own way. Great job George Lynch as always!
George Lynch is one of the best. I hope he keeps doing it up and showing the whole world just how good he is.
Love that George did his own take on this.
This is feeling, George is doing his version to honour Eddie
I was at this show as well. GL mentioned that there was no plan, and I don't even believe that he knew the bassist and drummer. It was basically a garage band practice. But George was way cool backstage, and signed anything!
Totally raw, spontaneous, unrehearsed and straight from the heart from one musician to a fallen brother.
Nice one George. Rock on buddy x
George Lynch very much still has it, he’s one of the only guitar players alive that at his age can still play as good or better than any of the new guys. He’s like a black sheep among guitar players he has a very unique style and sound you’ll always know it’s him. Eddie couldn’t do what George does and George couldn’t do what Eddie does. Plain and simple, but they respected eachother and came up in the same crowd.
Don't ever underestimate Lynch, he has proven his self for decades. Just as if,Eddie tried to mimic Lynch you'd had the same result. Both monsters on the guitar. Thumbs up to Lynch for the Tribute.
No no no I'm talking not playing EVH stuff but Lynch is just twanging the strings and very i guess ge sounded like a 16 yr old who had only played guitar for couple months 😆 sorry but I'm telling you 100% George was dealing with something
Lunch admitted awhile ago he tried to get Eddie's sound in the 80s but failed
LOL!!!!!! Same result??? ROFLMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Agreed. He was one if my top 3 favorite guitarists.
This is not Lynch at his best. He’s an old man now. In his prime, he was an absolutely stunning player. Check out the solo for Heaven Sent - it’s one of the best of the era.
I can't believe it! I live in Dallas, and had NO IDEA George was in town.
Damn it!!!!!
I used to take lessons from George back in 1981 in the back of our family owned record store in Cerritos, CA.
This is before the 1st Dokken album came out and he showed me how to play Breakin The Chains & Paris Is Burnin 🤘
Fuck yeah, bad ass!
I have a recording of a lesson he gave during that time period!
@@boneholster7096
Where did you take the lessons ?
@@billbondy492 Not I but tapes like these ran amuck back in my South Pasadena rocker days circa '88-'90.
Now that's a cool story.
Ed is one of my heroes, and so is George. George has recorded some of the greatest guitar work I have ever heard and he is also a great guy. This clip out of context left me cringing a bit like a number of the others commented. Long live the memory of Eddie and long live George!
Mr George “all soul” Lynch!!
Thank you for acknowledging Eddie as a great inspiration to you. He was to us all. R.I.P. Edward Van Halen. 😢
"Ain't Talkin Bout Love!" George Lynch style. Thank you George, you rock!!!
Bad ass..still amazing in 2021 ..great tribute Edward would love
What a tribute! And to think him, Eddie and Randy all came up together. You still got it George 😎🤘
Like.all GREAT guitarists they take "" risks""....hes playing EVH via inspiration NOT trying to clone him.....yep few bum notes etc etc bt it smacks of character and has his style ALL over it.....has KILLER vibrato.......ppl.who.want to see note for note versions theres plenty.of 14 year olds out there doing it....lacking feeling......i want to see guitar players stretching out.....GO GL@✌✌✌
Exactly, everyone is a critic and want to preach the gospel when it comes to playing. George actually knew and played with Eddie, all these other guys hear the radio and are instant experts.......🙃
@@shanealan2995 spot on ✌....
Yes sir
Lots of bum notes , George is my second favorite guitarist , this isn't good .
@Keith quesenberry you got nothing, boomer...
Best alternate guitar take I've ever heard of this song!!!!!!!!
I don’t know if I’ve ever seen George plying a Les Paul
Me either!
Same
He’s played Juniors.
That was my first thought. My second thought was “this sounds terrible.”
@@jayt717 Sounds like he’s making it up as he goes and his guitar seems a bit out of tune.
Nice George!
Sweet!
Great stuff!
Thank you!!
Killer stuff....this is what live playing and risk taking is all about....very exciting to see this! Great camerawork and audio too!
I think this is awesome. It’s great Lynch did an impromptu tribute. He plays with such emotion and when he plays you just know it’s Lynch. He even is facing away from the crowd like Eddie sometimes did. It’s crazy to me that people are crucifying him for being out of tune or not playing up to his level greatness over the years. Eddie Van Halen never played out of tune right? It’s never happened right? It’s happened to several of the greats. I’d listen to Lynch any day and would be grateful I got to hear anything the man played. Judge him by his body of work. I don’t hear him saying “I’m great, that was my best playing ever” he’s playing a tribute. He’s one of the most humble players despite being an absolute legend. He’s inspired countless people to pickup a guitar. There are 14 year old kids that can play EVH note for note yet they can’t create anything on their own. I’m pretty sure George is capable of playing VanHalen note for note. If he isn’t able at this point it may be due to some physical limitation (arthritis or something) I would never expect him to play VanHalen note for note because that’s not what George does. He does his own thing. That’s why you know it’s Lynch after a few notes. I’m pretty sure George can still play better than most of the guitar playing population. He’s a legend and should be shown some respect. I personally enjoyed it. If you didn’t, that’s certainly your right. But to come on here and blast away or give criticism, what’s the point? I’m sure if he didn’t play up to his usual level I’m sure he’s aware of it. Do you think George needs to hear it so he can improve? Again please name someone that has played perfectly every-time they have ever performed in front of a live audience. I’d love to meet them. Like I said, even the man the tribute was for didn’t play perfectly every time. I have heard the same comments about some of his performances over the years. Does that make him less great? Nope. Should he have stopped playing? I think not. Does it benefit anyone by leaving negative comments? This man is one of the last of the big time guitar players of that era. I hope he keeps playing until it become physically impossible for him to do so. I shall listen and enjoy until that day comes.
Never cared much for his playing but , finding out he was EVH roadie and tech in the club days makes this performance heartfelt and genuine .... Props to Mr Lynch !
That was Chris Holmes George and Eddie were rivals
@@michaelblack9458
I know who you're talking about and I've seen him interviewed about that ... No , I'm talking about George
One of the true few peers of EVH.
Thank you George for such a beautiful tribute. You are quite the gentleman and fantastic guitar player!
This is damn cool thanks George! George is a living legend as well! I had the honor of meeting him at a guitar clinic he did, snapped a couple photo's with him. He was cool. 🤙
There are VERY few men that I think have been as significant to the electric guitar as the great EVH. The great George Lynch is one of them. Like Eddie, this man is a card-carrying GUITAR GOD cut from the old cloth.
Seriously 👍
.. luv you George!!
May not be Eddie, but Lynch is still BadAss 🔥💯!!!
Yes he is one of the very best!
Thank you for watching.
That is absolutely epic!
What a wonderful tribute to Eddie Van Halen, George. Thanks for homage.
Laaaawd. I love my music. From MY time. From guys I grew up with. Blessings.
In the late 70's you had stories from L.A. about 3 guitarists, Eddie, Randy, & George. We lost Randy waayyyyy too young, unfortunately we recently lost Eddie. GOD, please do not take George from us!!
Just a good ole jam session. "Let's see what happens and have a great time playing with my friends"
George Lynch is a legend. Listen to all his work including Tears of the Sahara with Tony mcalpine, sorry if I didn't spell his last name right. Those two jammed a beautiful song together.
that is truly a great song and example of his playing at its best !!!
@@kcbrutality5271 I hear ya man, underated legend. That song... The way every note tells a story. "That's true playing"
Tears of Sahara , one of my favorite tunes!
@@adamchafetz2986 Great tune!! 👍
George is awesome
♡♡♡♡ Eddie should be so proud of this! He is smiling in heaven now! Hail to the king!♡
He would have covered his ears to not endure this monstrosity
I dig it! George seems like a really down-to-earth cool dude, and one of the greatest guitar wizards of all time!
great performance by Lynch, thanks for the video
Such a clear crisp tone..i dig it.
Ain’t talking about ponytails wow! This version by Lynch is all blues and improvisations superb tone!! Eddie, Randy and we have the privilege of having Lynch with us. George and Eddie were actually friends since their early days
George showed Randy the tapping sequence for Flying High Again too.
I cant stop watching this.
Wow that’s incredible!! He’s playing gets better and better.
That's just mean dude
This guy is still rockin'.
I've never seen George play a Les Paul.
czcams.com/video/vSYX-8ND6qo/video.html
Bout all he plays anymore lol
George has always played and favored Les Paul's. He recorded certain things with an LP, but didn't play them live that I ever seen. In the 1987 Randy Rhoads tribute issue of Guitar World it showed pictures of George playing a Les Paul. He even did a page of his techniques on guitar with his Les Paul including using a can opener as a tremelo bar on the rear tail piece and said dont do this at home. Lol! That was the first and only time I saw him play an LP. God I miss 1987. Once he signed on with ESP he couldn't be pictured with any other brand of guitar which made that issue of Guitar World strange. He had a few Kramer Barettas with ESP stickers on the headstocks.
Awesome.
It's nice how all the heavy guitarists are acknowledging Ed's gifts and contributions to the genre. You hear his influence a lot easier now that he's gone...
I love it he s having so much fun YEA!!! GO! George I met Eddie and the guys in high school Eddie was always smiling :) Rock N Roll for ever
This is effin amazing! And a tribute to the king! Eddie! Eddie would be happy he put his own spin on it and didn’t just play it verbatim
Eddie Van Halen!!.... Will be often emulated.. But never Duplicated!! One of the ultimate Immortals... His music will live on, and far Beyond, himself. Still mourning you my friend. ⚡🎸
Eddie and George definitely knew each other in the mid-70's, way before VH was even spotted by Gene Simmons. George is also the one who has said that he and Eddie were at a Harvey Mandel concert (no idea who that is) when Harvey started doing a bit of tapping. George said that Ed was watching it with his head cocked to one side and had the wheels turning in his head and that was where he got the idea from. Of course, he took it many levels above and made it his own. So George and Eddie knew and respected each other.
Do you have any citations to offer documenting that George in fact said this about Ed? If you do please for the love of God offer them up!
@@TruthNotRelative Sure. George quotes this in the book "Van Halen Rising."
Love the raw honest jam. He has the self confidence to wing it live. Confidence that comes with a 40 plus year history of killing it. Glad he is still out there. Same with Jake E Lee.
He has the confidence in his band that they’ll be able to follow where he goes. That’s awesome trust and confidence in their ability. 🤙🏼
he's special. his style and creativity is unique
I mean seriously the 80's were the guitar renaissance...so many amazing players that emerged in that decade it's ridiculous...
From one legend to another.
He is self taught & a bit unorthodox but damn is he fast. One of my favorite pieces of George Lynch work is the live opening intro to Paris is Burning. Phenomenal tone. George. Edward, Gary Hoey are my fav’s all time
A lot of guitarists are “fast.”
It sucks being 52 years old and watching Eddie Van Halen and Randy Rhoads begin their career and now I sit here in a crazy world where they're gone.
EDWARD VAN HALEN was not just an amazing Guitarist, but a damn amazing COMPOSER with Memorable songs ! 😎🤟
Bout to bring in 2023 the best way🤘
I have been a George fan since the 80s. I have a friend that owns a CD of George and Tony McAlpine playing together. He was amazed that I could pick George out on the first listening. Can you imagine having Eddie, George, and Randy playing in the same clubs. I wish I could have been there.
Although George's style has changed in recent years... you can still tell it's George. 🎸
Just goes to show you how good EVH was even against greats like Lynch. You can’t replicate or duplicate the best there ever was. Rip EVH, JH and SRV.
Not true…. JOHN 5 does a KILLER VAN HALEN…. He can play Edwards solos to the T
Divine Inspiration... Nothing more, nothing less...
George is just Awesome!
Geez i really love this song played by anyone. Especially an old hand who is a bit older than me. Im young 60s and wish i could of been remotely this good. I love this tribute regardless of its imperfections, as theres many great parts here for sure.
Nice. Time goes by but George is still at it.
Nice one Arthur !!
those talking shit about this performance probably struggle to play a G chord, just sayin.
Lynch is a Heavyweight . And underrated
hell yea !!
My second favorite guitarist next to Eddie in the 80s.Pretty classy without being flashy. Thanks George. 👍
you clowns..... that was awesome !!
Great respect to George. Badass guitarist (understatement).
George, the crowd in facing the other way around :-)
well done !
He did mention before the set that he'd been driving for 8 hours and didn't get the chance to practice. Wish he'd turned and faced the audience more though.
Did you catch what amps he was playing through?
@@davemarshall9153 The amps he was standing in front of are Category 5 amps. But he was using some sort of Marshall. Possibly a silver jubilee
Miss Eddie Van Halen
Nice! 😊
This improv has all GL's spin on it. Awesome tribute to EVH
Always...always loved george
George with his signature move which is playing with his back to the audience!
I seriously hate that....
I'm a big Lynch fan, but I don't get it. I'd be kind of irritated if I had paid to see him and he can't even face the audience.
Obviously you can tell there just jamming this...it was probably thrown together last minute. Lol at the hate.....George is one of the baddest players around🤘
Yes, it is obvious...or you would think it should be at least.
Thank you for watching!
@Keith quesenberry irrelevant or not...he still is a great guitar player. Whats wrong with playing the flute?
I love his take on this song, it's raw, it's improvised, it's risky, the sound of the guitar is really great (even if slightly out of tune but who cares if you like music you're used to this and dissonance has been in music since the beginning), thanks for filming it ! What he does at 2:18 is perfect !
George never plays it safe. That's what makes him awesome!
The Blabbermouth fans are on this post now and it's easy to see because George Lynch fans expect George to do what he does because that's exactly who George is. Lynch has always done his own thing esp with covers. He tunes the way he wants, he plays the way he wants and he does what George wants. I've met him a number of times and he is cool and I have enjoyed his playing for many moons.
Miss him
A leaguer paying tribute to fallen A leaguer........

playing this would take an insane effort in and of itself, but on a LP with no FL mind blowingly difficult. GL made this LP sing. RESPECT.
the guy who introduced me to the world of harmonic minor and dive bombs
Check out George, he know all the chords.....Lynch doing what he do..... no other like George.
Hell, I saw George play through Dream Warriors on four strings after one broke 1/4 of the way through the song back in the 80's. He killed it. The man is a master.
Lynch will always be known for the “King Of Articulation”!
I don't think people realize with all of these comments ,while this is a tribute to Eddie, George is clearly putting his own spin on it ...Wake up people!! really??
