    I started out with irons and eventually picked up a friend's 3x Nikon for about $20.
    It served me well for a few years and got me out to 750yds. And then I got a 5X Primary Arms Prism. It was great. A bit heavy but the ACSS reticle was awesome.
    Then I tried a red dot. And I'm damn near about to ditch scopes for an EOTech which serves almost just as well. And then run a QD magnifier should I really need it. Great info. I'm good with irons, but a red dot is just so much damn faster and has a smaller aiming point compared to irons. Great info. FWIW, my favorite zero is 36yds.

      You can do the same with a B27 target and a ballistics app (or your own testing). Its helpful to know if you choose the 25m, 50m, or 100m zero, what your hold overs/unders look like. For the 25/50 zeros, where the round crosses LoS twice, you need to do alot of practicing so you dont have to think hold over vs hold under depending on the range. 100m zero only crosses once, but by the time youre approaching the outer envelope of 556 effectiveness, youve dropped off the bottom of the torso with a high center chest POA. For me, a 50m zero combines the best of both, with all ranges from the muzzle to 500m hitting in the torso/pelvis with a high center chest POA. The 25m zero does even better, keeping the farthest rounds in the abdomen, instead of the pelvis, but has a larger gap of hold unders 25m - ~300m

Please keep up the wonderful work and I am wondering if you would be willing to travel to teach a mixed carbine/pistol class. I'm generally not a fan of the concept of BUIS *without* a quick-detach mount on the optic itself. Most red dots/illuminated scopes are perfectly reliable nowadays, so the likelihood of the dot or batteries failing is low. However, obstructions to the sight like mud, blood, fog, etc are nearly always a possiblity and will make the BUIS useless. If the sight fails during a fight and is obscured, you need to be able to quickly remove it, stuff it in a pouch/pocket, and then use the BUIS, which ideally have some kind of tritium insert or other illumination function

  • @apb2887

    I personally think the best micro red dot on the market today is the trijicon mro. It has the biggest objective lens (25mm) of any micro RD that I know of, capless turrets for the windage and elevation, the brightness dial on the top of the optic with an off setting in between each brightness setting. 2 night vision settings, water proof up to 100 feet, infinite eye relief and the same 5 year battery life as the T-2...The best part is its $250- $300 less than the T-2

    • @apb2887
      @apb2887 Před 7 lety

      MikeLadies Definitely not "perfect". I can't really say I found cons with it, but the few few cons I have heard others talk about is the slight magnification the MRO has, and that it's not a true 1x optic. But honestly the magnification to me is minut and hasn't bothered me. The other thing I've heard alot is the slight blue tint, but honestly I haven't noticed that at all either... maybe my eyes just don't pick up on it? This is just my opinion, I bet if you polled 100 people that have both optics probably 60 of them would say they'd rather have the aimpoint

    • @MathiasLaakkonen
      @MathiasLaakkonen Před 7 lety +1

      It's a good solution, but think about the loss of a nice cheek weld when looking through the red dot sight and determine if it's worth it.

    • @mandaloin
      @mandaloin Před 7 lety +1

      The availability of 45 degree mounts for red dots renders it obsolete in my opinion. When looking through that piggybacked red dot, you have no cheek weld. In my experience that causes lack of consistency and speed. I feel like it works best if you're primarily using that setup for the magnified optic at longer ranges.

    • @orpheusepiphanes2797
      @orpheusepiphanes2797 Před 7 lety

      I honestly am not sure how much I can commit to it. I have astigmatism which is why I went with a prism scope to begin with. I would be willing to spend the money to try an RMR as long as the concept isnt unsound

    • @mandaloin
      @mandaloin Před 7 lety

      Try it with a 45 degree mount. If it doesn't work you can always sell it or trade for almost as much as you paid.

    • @mandaloin
      @mandaloin Před 7 lety

    Lots of words without a lot of practical data on the zero. Vigilance Elite has the best combat zero video. It's great to suggest you can theoretically hit a target with a red dot "if you know the holdovers," but that is a hell of a lot easier said than done. The Army does train a 300m battle zero and does not explain it. You take the 25m zero target, zero, then go out to the qualification range, typically in the same afternoon. Combat zeroes work and they are practical. However, I would never expect to be able to reliably or consistently extend a combat zero on a red dot zeroed even to 300m center hold out to 400 or 450 meters. That type of hold, by merit of not having a BDC or mil dot reticle pattern can only be developed through experience and muscle/visual memory, which most people, including most military personnel, do not have the luxury of. For one thing, not all bases (National Guard, Reserves, smaller bases, deployed personnel) have ranges out to even 300 meters or beyond, and most people in a suburban or urban environment also do not have the ability to utilize a practical outdoor range.

    I have my MRO in the middle as well for the reason of peripheral view and balance, but there are other MRO users that claim having it closer to your eye ghosts the body of the optic, helps get the dot into view faster, mitigates dot sway and the distortion around the MRO's lens due to it's 1.05x magnification. I personally didn't find it any faster, more stable, or any less lens distortion than mounting it in the center, but what is your take on this argument?

    When I use a red dot, I don't see "a" dot, but more like a raspberry. Might be a slight astigmatism in my right eye. Have you guys seen this before?

    I will always run back-up irons regardless..Every rifle i own is equipped with the MRO or the T2...Why not have the extra insurance....I rather have it and not need it then need it at not have it....Over seas ive seen alot of guys that were contractor's run just aimpoints or Eotech's...In my humble opinion that is absurd and just silly...The Acog i humped was a rugged piece of gear but theres no way im free balling it with just an optic

    Instead of duct tape on the ACOG, maybe run just a front scope cap upside down, that way you can pop the cap back on instead of loosing your tape?

    Great video Travis, I have a question or maybe a monkey wrench for you. I have a minor astigmatism and I've been looking at the MRO with absolute co-witness. What do you feel about that and if you have any idea whats the best systems for people like myself. #noobshooters

    • @1sbratton

      Check out his video where he does an initial impression video on the MRO, he address the astigmatism issue briefly.

    • @huntercarney5525
      @huntercarney5525 Před 7 lety +1

      Manny Macfly for quick reference, the Mro is very high quality. Wide field of view in a very small compact package. Very durable, very reliable. The astigmatism isn't going to affect the Mro any different than it's going to affect any other illuminated dot sight. It just makes the dot itself slightly less crisp. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to pull the trigger on an Mro with astigmatism or otherwise.

    • @ddyoder
      @ddyoder Před 7 lety

      Only issue is with older models (512, etc.) when exposed to extreme temperature shifts the zero would move. If you purchase any of the versions they sell in recent years (EXPS, XPS, etc.) you should be gtg in any situation. But depending on budget and your uses-- you may not need a battle-proven red dot like Aimpoint/Eotech/Trijicon/etc. and could get by with Holosun/PrimaryArms/Burris/etc. if you don't have those needs

    • @huntercarney5525
      @huntercarney5525 Před 7 lety

      Henry Reed I personally am conflicted about it. I think it's a great, innovative design. Simple and straight toward. But it's the first of its kind. It's not always a good thing to buy the newest thing, especially when it's never been done. That leave you acting as a test dummy. I don't want to be a lab rat. I want to know that my equipment is going to work and be able to withstand what I throw at it before I buy it. There's no testimony to its durability, ruggedness, or reliability. It's hard to shell out that much cash for s sighting system without any sort of track record. Just my thoughts
