  • This video started out as just a final thoughts update on some makeup I've been testing lately, the Makeup by Mario SurrealSkin foundation, the Rare Beauty highlighters and the new Isamaya Beauty Wild Star collection (mainly the palette), but recent developments led me to dedicating a portion of today's video to Isamaya's offline life and her recent trip to Malawi, paid for by Madonna. I welcome your thoughts.

Thought experiment- Would it bother you if a group of Chinese tourists filmed themselves interacting with American kids who live in group homes or homeless kids in the poorer urban areas of Baltimore or Oklahoma City or San Francisco and then they posted it on their Instagram? Maybe with some nice footage of themselves giving away toys at a homeless shelter and dancing to some rap with the kiddies? Maybe some vids from the Oklahoma Red Earth Pow Wow, just to get some native aboriginal culture? Maybe with a voiceover about how nasty the conditions are in America and how much they care about our kids.Juxtaposed with cuts from their shopping trip to L.A. and Rodeo Drive? I would be feeling all the feelings about that, I think. Just a thought.

And, you know, not being complicit in the creation of a lot of these problems with our eCoNomiKs n pOlyTiks to begin with. Like, why aren't we more embarrassed for our write-ups in future history books when it's basically structurally equivalent to Jack Ass but with the total lack of morality sundae that is punching down.

Pretty much anyone filming themselves doing “good deeds” and posting pics and video to CZcams or any other social media is exploiting the underserved to boost their ego. It has zero to do with helping others.

no, actually. its better than doing nothing and being a keyboard warrior pretending to be on some righteous charity enforcement. i dont think those kids give a single shit if the gifts came from someone on IG, a makeup artist or some such. nor do i think the food the money has paid for, or what could be donated by spreading awareness, tastes worse because someone posted it. i think people need to get their priorities straight. maybe she used to to self promo, but did her money and donations help or not? which matters more? snatch the food and toys away so that the IG-er can be punished online? its absurd.

I agree with the thought experiment above, but I also think that this conversation is projecting a lot onto the intentions and perceptions of others. Posting about doing something good for less fortunate like that does give off virtue signaling vibes as well as weirdly conveying a privilege gap, but would it also be weird to post nothing about her trip if she is a person who posts? What would she post that would be acceptable? Maybe this was a trip in preparation to raise even more charity for them by exploring what their lives are really like? What do the people there think about the charity or that trip in particular, having a new guest like Isamaya communing with them via Madonna? Trick question, because we can't ever know the sum of the collective thoughts of those people, and to pretend we do know without them telling us, is also a weird way to assume we know best. I'm not defending or condemning, just saying I personally can only go by what content is being put out there without leaping. It sounds like maybe there was some weirdness on the response from Isamaya on social media. I personally would feel weird posting a ton about a trip like that until I had time to process it, and being a doctor I would probably be more involved / working in that capacity if I were indeed on a humanitarian trip, so entirely different experience for me. Also being in a place so foreign, I would probably be more observant rather than focused on creating content, especially filming kids and posting that. Anyway, thanks Kackie as always for the stimulation, cosmetically and intellectually! XOXO

Kackie, I think you are kind of amazing. I stumbled upon your videos about 2-3 months ago and I am hooked. I’m a 35 yr. old, queer, black man who has just started wearing makeup on a daily basis. (I started in the summer of ‘22). I spoiled myself and dove headfirst into the high-end beauty space, which has been an amazing journey. Hearing your thoughts on some of the makeup that I have purchased or want to purchase, has been extremely helpful to me. The way you articulate your thoughts speaks to my soul. (I was a Theatre and Dance major in college, so I speak in hyperbole. 😂)
Moral of the story, I think you are the coolest. I wish we could be best friends, but until then I’ll continue to watch your videos religiously. 😂 (God, I hope that wasn’t creepy. I swear, I’m harmless.😅)

Honestly, hearing you act exasperated about her being British is kind of rich. Americans have had to foot the bill for wars, weapons and military bases all around the world at the expense of a social safety net. That is the definition of imperialism. Complaining about a rich mua isn't the highbrow activism viewers think it is, and it's worrisome that a bunch of well off westerners secretly think they accomplished something by not buying more makeup from "problematic people". Let's be frank, Isamaya's crime is being a rich art school graduate. She self inserts into fantasy and comes off a bit daffy. That applies to many people *ahem*.

Not to excuse Isamaya, but I'm going to play devil's advocate a little because Nars actively chose to start selling in physical stores in mainland China instead of just on-line, so they obviously don't care about animal rights. Pat McGrath had stickergate, as you said, and the trademark controversy (basically trying to own the word divine in beauty products). Naturium had Susan Yara violating FTC guidelines and I'm sure most brands have some skeletons in their closets. Obviously, everyone is free to support whoever they want to support and not every cause will be as important depending on the person. And that's OK.

    • @MillieMMelting
      @MillieMMelting Před 7 měsíci

Why is Nars selling in mainland China a symbol of lacking animals rights? There’re tones of orgs, companies, people who care about animal rights in mainland China, just like other countries. I know many Chinese friends and families are vegetarians. I feel like Chinese has been taken so many false rumors that people tend to do maliciously( consciously/unconsciously) It’s a video about ISAMAYA and her Africa trip, I believe there’s no China included in isamaya’s video nor Kackie’s video. But there are comments talking about the country like insanely all the time. I know social media authenticity is always an issue and people get affected by it but I’m so sick of people take discrimination as granted and don’t even make sure if their sources are reasonable before expressing hates wherever they go. I mean go to see the world or really talk to / get to known and be respectful instead of hating with a closed mind. And isn’t this just partly stand for what Kackie’s expressing?

It’s the asides about Isamaya and voluntourism the reason why you’ve become one of my favorite channels. A few months ago, Vice put out a video called The Dark Side of Rich Kids Volunteering Abroad and that was when I first learned about voluntourism. (That video is fascinating btw.) All of this is made more problematic by the possibility of the realities spoken about in that video of what the lives of the orphans are actually like once the visitors have left. 😓 But I want to reiterate that I really do appreciate that you’re a white creator that doesn’t shy away from talking about race or social justice issues in your videos when it’s relevant to the topic, and you always manage to keep hold of the nuance of the situation without sounding sanctimonious.

I think it’s important to add to the voluntourism conversation that all forms of voluntourism (orphanages, farms, graffiti painting, it really doesn’t matter) are taking away local jobs from locals in that community. It might make you feel really happy to dance with a small African child (puking at the tokenism), but the money you spent on a flight, hotel(s), guide(s), food, etc. could easily employ an actual person who would be an actually consistent connection to the child you danced with once. It is SO selfish and egotistical to think your presence is necessary or helpful to get communities the resources they need.

Sometimes when a makeup artist drops a product that is driven by the desire to have that type of thing in their kit, it can be a huge boon to the world at large because it fills a niche that has been empty. Most of the time though, I think, it kind of disappointing for the rest of us who mainly do makeup on their own skin and don't need to have such a huge variety of foundation. I'm kind of shocked that it isn't long lasting because if you have to do makeup for an event it HAS to be bullet proof otherwise you won't get future work.

Perhaps it’s just the elementary teacher in me, but I just never post pictures of kids on social media unless they are my own children or I am very close friends/family with the children’s parents/guardians and I know them to be ok with it. Anytime I see someone post a random pic that features kids they don’t know it seems to always be exploitation in the interest of the adult- even if it’s as simple as artistic expression. It’s never the artistic expression of the child at the center of the post or to advocate directly for their needs. It’s to make the adult in the picture or behind the camera appear a certain way. This whole situation of course also touches upon racial and social issues that are equally important to observe and I really appreciate you taking the time to address it and for the commenters with even more proximity here that have contributed to the conversation. It's okey to come here, show the horrors of war, like ruined buildings, living under bomb attacks etc., but it's also important to show that we are trying to live a normal life despite of all this shit. To show that people in Ukraine are dancing and singing during the alarm (missile strike) on underground, for example, to show that we could stay positive despite everything. We don't mind.

Just based on having watched videos in which Isamaya discussed the causes to which she wanted to steer profits from her collections, supposedly with each collection bringing a new cause, and the first one being to help Europe-bound migrants crossing the Mediterranean. And it sorta seemed like she’d walked the walk on that to some extent, maybe had some personal experience and background with those refugees? But I have no idea what the reality of that is.

Yes to comparisons in second impressions videos. I say this with all the respect and love I have for your channel but it was a little bit jarring to hear your love for Isamaya palettes and talk about how unique her formulas were in your other videos to all of the sudden in this video talk about how dupable the formulas are. I hope you know in saying this, it's not meant to be a dig at you or your authenticity because I think you're great. But I've been wanting the Isamaya palettes because of the unique formulas and I think it would just help give all of us context with swatch comparisons in the same video as the second impressions. It helps keep the buying urge more grounded and realistic from the get go.

My feeling is that if you travel to "third world countries" or actually any empoverished area (might be a few miles from your home, you know), and you have a mindset of trying to help in some capacity, that's fine, help is needed. What people don't need, is for you to then proclaim to the world how much it sucks to be them and how "eye opening" or whatever the experience was - for YOU. Idk if that will help anyone out there. I powder with Dior Powder-No Powder in the areas I need to and apply the rest of my products (a mix of cream & powder ones) and finish with Charlotte Tilbury spray. As for other foundations I use that are holy grail status to me (I’m also a true olive skin tone. Light medium/Medium/Medium-Tan ranges throughout the year): Armani Neo Nude, Armani Luminous Silk, Hourglass Vanish Foundation Stick, Dior Backstage, Summer Fridays Skin Tint, and Chanel Water Tint(s). I keep my skincare the same aside from moisturizer. I change that up depending on the weather. Lightweight when it’s hotter, thicker or more hydrating when it’s colder. I don’t have a preference on finish or consistency b/c each one serves a purpose at certain times.

These people by our standards are impoverished, but their culture is rich and filled with beauty in ways we cannot always grasp. Visits by outsiders are also a necessary part of their economy. In short, if these visits stopped they would suffer a serious loss of both income and life sustaining items that they need. So both sides of the equation are receiving something good out of the exchange even though their is some “ick” involved in it from a purely tourist point of view. I really appreciated your comments, it is something that deserves discuss

I feel like most people I follow are on Team Dry & automatically assume if it's not for their skin, then it's definitely for oily skin. NOT accurate. I have been bamboozled many times by those types of recs, only to be plagued by super cakey or too dewy (to the point of being greasy) foundations for me. I, too, would like a natural finish & prefer light-med coverage. My only issue is making it stay on my face longer than 2 hours, which is usually resolved/mitigated by appropriate skin prep. I find I can make most foundations work for me, as long as I prep for my skin type. That said, I do love the Fenty Eaze Drop on me, as well as WA Vital Skin, Tower28 Sunny Days & NARS Light Reflecting. These are all in my current rotation. Dear Kackie, first, thank you for this excellent and helpful video. You reliably provide such valuable content - you’re a rare light in our current cultural landscape 🎉 Second, I want to provide a wee bit of critical feedback regarding a very brief, offhand comment you made about Madonna.
You were indicating your (perfectly reasonable, to my mind) frustration with her, and you mentioned her cosmetic surgery, and her ‘resemblance’ to a much younger woman. To me, your tone came across as contemptuous, which I’m afraid I find worrisome. I think being contemptuous about an older woman’s cosmetic procedures provides fuel for an assortment of ugly, misogynist tropes. Additionally, especially in the context of a beauty channel, I worry that some of your older women viewers might feel an unpleasant twinge as they see you, a very beautiful, young woman, imply that (some) efforts to appear younger are laughable/ contemptible. (I say this as a 52 year old woman, just to be clear about my own particular vantage point.)
I am certain that this is not at all the direction you intended your comment to go. In my own life, however, I have only been able to stop unintentionally contributing to views that I don’t endorse when someone has pointed out that I may have done so. I have benefited from that type of input on multiple occasions. In that light, I decided to make this comment. You make clear, in this video, and others that I have watched, that you do not believe any part of the worrying ideas I mentioned above. You also consistently and clearly demonstrate your commitment to treating your viewers with kindness and respect, in every video of yours that I have ever watched. All of which makes my criticism very small potatoes, indeed 🥔!
I hope my wee concern makes sense. More importantly, however, I hope I have made clear how much I appreciate you and your work. Thank you so much!

I'm somehow not surprised by Isamaya putting out content like that. She definitely gives "I'm a well off cis white female who has never suffered & drips in privilege" (I'm saying this while fully aware of the fact that I too have been privileged in many ways). To me it just feels like she's ignorant & young & just needed something like this to change her lens on life. I don't think it makes her a horrible person & I hope people have been holding her accountable without full on bullying her or "cancelling" her. Cancel culture does not work, or doesn't work by making someone more educated or aware or enlightened. Idk apparently I had way too much to say. I honestly don't even really care about Isamaya. As someone who was sent on church “missionary” trips to Honduras when I was a teen to “build schools for the less fortunate” I look at stuff like this and cringe so hard. I loved my trip and definitely worked hard digging ditches, learned how to stack rocks and cement into a wall from an amazing 70 year old Honduran man, but the absolute absurdity of it all strikes me as an adult. We raised money for that trip and instead of spending half of it on flights and accommodation for 40 white kids it would have been so much more beneficial to have hired more locals who actually had experience in construction with that money. Ultimately these trips were more about teaching us privileged American kids that we need to appreciate our lives in the US more than actually helping those communities. It’s totally more about giving the kids the “poor 3rd world experience” than actually helping people there.

It is not able to be built up in any way whatsoever without getting cakey. It reminds me of the flower beauty foundation, the glowy one, but lighter in coverage and texture. is voluntourism the same thing as white saviorism? you're using them interchangably but I wasn't aware that they were unless you know, you use the voluntouring as a way to spotlight your white-saviorness. Like you could volunteer to work on a farm or a conservation project as a way to afford visiting another country, which doesn't seem savior-y to me, more of a work exchange, but if you did your volunteering with an orphanage AND took tons of pics of yourself doing it and making the kinds of sappy posts that Is did, that seems like white-saviorism. Idk probably didn't word this well but I was a bit confused as to why they were being automatically conflated.

I have never seen any makeup person on YT talk about this one but it's actually kind of great?? I wear it over Dr Jart cicapair as a primer and it's lovely!

I think some "dewy" foundations have a tendency to sink into fine lines and pores, or dewy primers under liquid foundations. I think now that I'm 32, I just want a well moisturized face and then a bb cream, a bouncy concealer (like matte but stretchy?) And just a few areas patted down with compact powder to blur. Dewy stuff unless it's like a really hydrating cream, has a tendency to separate overall my dry patches, and "collect" in the skin flakes which looks awful.

Honestly I feel like the Sugar Drizzle Hypernova palette might loosely dupe the vibes of the Isamaya palette in a slightly shifted, more colorful way - Are any of the shades actual color dupes, or are the textures the same, no, but it's a purple, pink, gold, brown color story with 3 colorful mattes instead of neutrals, and a dark matte.

GREAT VIDEO, QUEEN. I loved the fact that you duped a product from a problematic brand. That could be a cool video idea in the future! Like, duping products that you already have from problematic brands/brands from which you can understand people not wanting to buy. Ex: Anastasia. Again, loved the video!

Just to explain the Anastasia thing: brand owner has a history of supporting American conservative politicians in her personal life as well s being MAYBE supportive of Russia in the Ukraine conflict. Smokey Glow has a great video on it.

Yeah it's SO HARD when you get into donors and shit, though. Because you can honestly rule out almost every brand and my job becomes a minefield. As a totally arbitrary line (a desperate one really) I've limited my real criticisms to the things brand owners make public on their own platforms? It's so dumb but for real like, everyone's hands are dirty at the end of the day.

    • @historygirl82

At its height of colonialism the British empire was the largest empire in the entire history of the world so I'm sure she was just making that connection to Isamaya's culture/heritage.

The Wild Star cowgirl branding is not the issue, I know, but I hate this type of packaging, it has a very real impact on how rural America & the painful history of the West (US western states, colonized much later than the east & midwest; it's a whole sideline of us history) is perceived. It certainly makes it hard to convince Americans of the issues faced by rural people. And, while these ppl are behaving very badly right now, in general, the mental health crisis here is very real. And that's just one of many issues that are literally life or death. But marketing won't let go of this romantic notion, and it not only messes with urbanites' perception, it creates an unhealthy passion for the past. I am.not saying it's directly racist branding, but it encourages a culture built on racism & convinces people that the past was some gorgeous wonderful thing (it most definitely was not, post-invasion) worth preserving. The truth is history, but marketing like this perpetuates all the lies that have led to where we are today. Also, it is tacky ass, and very appealing to modern almost-cowgirls (vs actual working cowgirls, a different thing) who love early 00s style (they spent $150 on their blingy butt jeans & will be wearing them for a long time to come... the trend will live on here til all the beading finally falls off...)

I like Isamaya as an artist . She is very creative . As for her “volantourism “
or whatever, she can do whatever she likes , people do that kind of stuff all the time , she just happened to be slightly famous because of her brand . She might eventually learn about the criticism and why it’s a sensitive issue but she is a open minded and cool person she will transform . It’s easy to Judge people because of the “ woke” culture
Big Business and multinational corporations has been “ exploiting “ other countries resources for years , deleting their wealth . THAT is the bigger picture
