I appreciate the comment...but just visit a few of the other videos on the channel. You’ll see all kinds of suggestions for strumming patterns. That’s because there is no “right answer.” On my newest videos, I make a separate tutorial which includes strumming...but again, there is no single right answer. Also, these videos are used by school and community groups that have leaders who want to specify the strum used by the group-and do not want to follow a pattern that is forced upon them. There’s also the matter of becoming a stronger player and being able to hear a pattern and then play that pattern without having to have someone else tell you what to do. So as it is, I am pretty happy letting you know the chords and when to change those chords, offering strumming on tutorial videos for those who really need it, and letting the play along videos just be play along videos.
@@ukeplayalongs - agreed. No need for robotic strumming patterns. Listen to the music. Let it flow. Play with your heart. Play with your feel. Play with your emotion. Music is not about strumming patterns. Music is about how you feel and how it makes you feel. Thanks for the wonderful play along. I love it. :)
@@ukeplayalongs - That's fine. I'm listening for the instrumental part of it, and yes, I'd love to hear someone singing along with it because that's the point of it to begin with of course. I just don't want to come to a ukulele video to learn a song and then find that I can't even hear how it's supposed to sound. If I wanted to hear the actual song with the original sounding background band, I would just go to that group's page... I am looking to hear the ukulele version when I come to a page like this.
Then what you’re really looking for is covers. The main purpose of this channel is educational, for teachers to use in classrooms with students that are reluctant to participate in music, and to get them playing music that is valuable and relates to them. Many of those students are reluctant singers, and they aren’t going to carry the song by themselves. That remains our purpose...every creator making these kinds of play alongs is a music educator with that same goal in mind. What we’ve found is that a lot of other players enjoy playing along with the actual audio of a song, with the chords on screen...individuals and groups, and they are welcome to use the videos, too. We will also change the pitch of the song to make it a little easier to play along. With close to 58,000 subscribers, there is interest in these types of videos. I’m sorry the videos are of no use to you...the good news is that they don’t cost you anything and you can choose to skip future videos from this channel (and if you watched an ad, that revenue went to CZcams and the Copyright holder as this channel cannot be monetized). I appreciate that you took the time to communicate with me, but this channel...and the others like it (Ukulaliens, Dr. Jill Reese, Andy Ramos)...will continue to make videos with our educational purposes in mind. So, look for play alongs with covers...I think that is what you are looking for. The Ukulele Teacher, Katie Denure, Cynthia Lin, Abby Lyons, and Ricky Somborn all do those kinds of videos! Good luck!
@@ukeplayalongs - Nah. I'm looking for the educational side. As a piano teacher and an audition choirs director as well, sometimes when my students are learning a new song, I will play it for them and if there's a vocal part, I will do that, but when I play it and sing, I am simply doing the acoustic parts that they need to hear and sometimes see on the piano, so they know what it should sound like and they can see certain aspects and skills being utilized as well. I do not ever play the soundtrack when doing this, because that has nothing to do with the educational side of what I am teaching. Once they get it down, then I allow them to play to the soundtrack on their own, but it is almost never ever played in the studio when learning the piece. If they are a reluctant singer and they are not going to carry the song by themselves, they still need to know how the piano part sounds and is played first, before we ever add in the original. I'm definitely looking for the educational side - I'm just looking to see and hear how the ukulele part sounds by itself or along with a vocal part first... (see - I'm watching how you're strumming and what fingering you use for your chord transitions and progressions. Hear - I'm listening for the nuances that make the song unique an opportunities where you're possibly adding fun ideas in or that we might be able to add in ourselves).
I also hear what you're saying here. I'll just state things from my own experience: I brought ukulele to my students in grades 6-8 about 4 years ago (last year I was bumped to elementary, and I did it with 5th grade, which has been fun). I tried teaching ukulele through traditional methods (e.g. Hal Leonard) and as I was taught percussion, tuba, and even guitar as a student. This was in a choir class where we didn't have anything going on in the middle of the year...concerts in December and May. So I tried ukulele (had to fundraise to get them). My students were SO excited to learn; but they didn't want to do the traditional method; and they didn't want to sing and play songs that we did together. I tried one of Dr. Jill Reese's videos..."Shake It Off," and they came alive--even the kids that normally were problematic in class. I saw about 99% buy-in, even from the handful of kids that only played Am7 (C6). But they were playing...and SINGING. It changed my entire way of thinking about it. We had choir the rest of the year, where (most of them) were singing. But this made the music relevant to them, and it allowed them to sing behind a security blanked while playing. It wasn't long until I started making some of my own play alongs...and this channel was born. I understand what you're saying about wanting to see what others do with technique and how it sounds. I try to meet people halfway right now with the tutorial videos on my other channel; but I don't do covers yet. One aspect is purely an issue of time...I find it hard enough to do the play alongs and a tutorial each week...as well as the other videos I like doing on the other channel, particularly the weekly reviews. The other issue is finances. These videos generate no income...even the videos with a million views. CZcams deems this channel as "duplication" and will not monetize it, so the 3-6 hours it takes to make the play along videos (not counting the tutorial) are really working for the copyright holder for free. That leads to my other channel, which is monetized (making a whole $1 a day). If I sing and play a song on that channel which is under copyright, I'm at the whim of CZcams and the Copyright holder if they will permit it at all, and if they do, the Copyright holder shares a very small percentage of the already small payment per view (about $0.003) with the creator. So it becomes an issue of effort vs. reward. And sadly, my voice is good enough that if I sing something, it gets matched. I sometimes envy those people that work on CZcams making covers, and the algorithm doesn't match it to anything! So I make tutorials where I talk about strumming without singing the song to avoid those problems. (Incidentally, I twice have had a company claim copyright to a tutorial where the only recognizable element of the song was the title--and I disputed both of those claims successfully, since I did not use any element of the melody!) I'm not looking to make a fortune here, or to quit my job (I quite enjoy teaching) to become a full-time CZcams personality. But I do want to make sure that my efforts don't actually set me backwards, if you know what I mean. So, in closing, I completely understand what you're saying about leading with your voice and accompaniment with piano or guitar. I found that my students responded better with the real music--and they really do pick it up quite successfully. The only ones who do not are those that make an effort not to--and that is thankfully a small amount of them!
I’ve recently started a collaboration with ukutabs.com where that site is posting the chords and lyrics to the videos on this site. That is for new songs, however, and I hope to go back someday and do the same for the other 400+ songs on this channel. For now, go to ukutabs.com and search for the title this song and see how it lines up. It should be pretty close and then you can copy and paste that into any song sheet editor (on iOS, something like OnSong).
If you are left handed and playing a left handed ukulele, all the chord charts would be reversed, or you can think of looking at the chord charts as you would THROUGH your headstock. If you're left handed and playing the ukulele flipped, or just playing a normal ukulele, the chords would be the same.
