Villeneuve’s films are about the grey zone of morality, Nolan’s films are about the human race against time
Well said!
I love both Christopher Nolan and Denis Villeneuve so much
Both are my favorite directors of all time
Really great tier list ranking. I am so happy to see that Arrival is getting the love it deserves, truly a sci fi classic .
Dune 2 is gonna go in that All Time list straightaway.
I hope so

I highly doubt that. It could be awesome, but not all time great.

What validated your list for me personally was your ranking for Interstellar and Enemy. I love both films and really feel like both are underrated in terms of their directors filmography.
So many good movies listed here. But my top 5 movies from these directors is:
5) Dune
4) Interstellar
3) Arrival
2) Dark Knight
1) Inception
You haven’t seen Oppenheimer yet, have you?
@@obadiahplainman8897I have. And it's phenomenal, but it's not better than TDK, Inception or Interstellar. It's definitely the fourth best movie of Nolan's career.

Between Incendies and Prisoners, Québécois cinema "lost" Denis, but the World discovered his talent and that's totally fine! Blade Runner 2049 is one of my favroite movies, and with Dune he confirmed his trajectory toward becoming one of the greatest.
have to go with nolan. But obviously both are at the top of their game. Only old scorsese is really competing with these two in my opinion.
Austin in the Mission Impossible vs John Wick tier list: One of these movies I love so much that I'm putting it above everything else in its own special "all-time" tier
Austin in the Nolan v Denis tier list: You know what, throw half these movies in the all-time tier
I can't blame him though, these two directors have some classics under their belt
Incendies is a must see !
Agreed
For awhile Nolan was my fav...but ever since BR2049 and Dune (and now Dune 2, judging from trailer), it has to be Denis. I feel the quality of Denis' work is more consistent in how great it is, while the quality of each Nolan film tends to fluctuate a bit more. Ultimately, they are both masters at what they do and we are fortunate to have both of them entertain us.
Lol, uh, no. It’s not close, it’s Nolan right now. Hands down.
Hell no. Dune was slow af with very little character depth. Movies like Interstellar made me care about the characters. if I don't care about the characters then I don't care about the movie especially movie with no plot for the first half. Interesting world isn't enough to cover a 2 and a half hour movie. Even the world building isn't perfect, it would have been more interesting the opening scenes didn't have so much blatant exposition. Also, why is blade runner so remarkable except the character development of K and cinematography/atmosphere. The main villain isnt stopped. The secret organization that is meant to stop the humans doesn't go anywhere. It feels like the movie barely changed.
Dune was literally just a visual spectacle. The content wasn't anything special. Nolan's Inception, Interstellar, TDK are better than anything Villeneuve has directed.
@@HarryK-ld2edNolan has a huge problem with no fleshing out characters though. More notably seen in Tenet which has an awesome concept but is ultimately a mess and has no character depth. I know that’s not the point but that’s typically what Nolan is known for.
Dennis has a far more consistent catalogue in my opinion. Dune sure lacks the depth that his other films contain but it is the first in the series. Batman begins was also very safe in the way Nolan approached it. Arguably the most safe Nolan movie.
@@ompatel5570Nolan is literally known for having a lot of exposition though. It’s arguably at its worst in tenet.
😁 I'm not gonna say much but what i will say is that imagine being so talented to the point that you're able to tell a story backwards while still keeping the audience at the edge of their seats, being so talented to be able to write one of the best plot twists in all cinema, being so talented to be able to direct one of the best superhero movies of all time, and being so talented to be able to create a top 10 sci-fi movie of all time.
Bonus is that he gave us the opportunity to be able to experience how dogs live... proving to us that you can still have a damn good time without really knowing what's going on 😂
Nothing against Denis, but I feel he still has a long way to go.

Nolan at this moment, I think it's like judging two athletes in their prime here, I think if they both retired right now, Nolan would go down as the more iconic director, and he would win for having the better career but it's a close call and only time will tell. I think a great debate would be Spielberg and Marty. They both changed the whole game and still do some really good stuff.

Interstellar will forever hold the greatest film score in my opinion I honestly don't know if anything will ever top it. It's a score that did its job right: It makes you feel something every time you listen to it and watch the movie with it.
Literally will commit that it is the GREATEST score, yet the most unimaginable/unexplainable snub in Oscar scores/GUARANTEED WINS of all time
@@peenzert1994 there are many snubs throughout all Oscar history, that's the most egregious one
I’ve been to Zimmer’s concert a few weeks ago, it’s definitely a must have to visit, but I’d say when you listen to Dune score in real life, it’s way more special then anything else, the voice of the woman is crazy, it’s so impressive, I’m sure if she had said let’s make a revolution in UK, the entire arena would’ve done it immediately

I wanted to view Oppenheimer before viewing this video and as I always believed, I slightly gravitate towards Nolan's movies more as a whole but there is no denying that these two filmmakers are legitimately great. Every movie they put out generally involves amazing performances, breathtaking visuals and challenging storytelling.
Both of them are among my favorite modern day filmmakers. I feel as though Denis has a bit more of a direct mastery of his craft, but that's also because his style is a bit more referential. His storytelling is unmatched in my opinion, his films are densely packed and intentionally paced and he always has complete control in terms of conceptual execution, I think Arrival is a testament to that. Nolan can struggle with that at times but that's due to the sheer size, scale and complexity of what he's trying to portray, however when Nolan truly delivers on his vision it's something to behold. I also find Denis to be more consistent but and this is just my opinion, he's made several good or even very good films but nothing GREAT, in terms of just a defining piece of cinema. Nolan on the other hand, while not as consistent has higher highs, some of his films become full on cultural phenomenons.
All the Christopher Nolan and Denis Villenueve movies that I have seen ranked;

I really like the premise of Director match-ups for tier lists. Would love to see you do others like Tarantino vs. Coen bros. Carpenter vs. Cronenberg. Coppola vs. Scorsese, etc.
The only thing that makes me incline towards Nolan is just confusion in my brain in good way. It made us think a lot. Discussions still happening over Old Nolan movies. I like Denis too but I think he still has to go long way. Denis best thing is Arrival. He needs movies like arrival more. And i think dune will be what Batman triology In Nolan career.
I’m happy that Interstellar is on the ALL-TIME, and while I will admit that ranking these has got to be extremely difficult, I still would switch interstellar with your inception ranking. I’d also move Sicario to All-Time, and it’s so recent, so I wouldn’t necessarily put Oppenheimer there, but with time I can see it easily moving up that list too.
ohh man..what a video!!! This is probably one of my ALL TIME fav video by Austin. Although dont agree with some of the decisions, but doesnt matter..this is cinema!!!
🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🤝🏻
Another 🔥 video from Austin! Love it. I have not seen all of Villeneuve's movies. Of what I have seen and if I only pick one from both, I would go Prisoners for Villeneuve and Inception for Nolan.
Good choices man!!
Great list and video! Time flew by 😅 forgot I was sitting here for almost an hour.
Agreed
Great video! 👍 Two of my favorite directors too.. Now I'm waiting for the Sir Roger Deakins Tier list 😬
He's shot absolute masterpieces in all genres!
Memento moves up on my list. So rewatchable and fresh. Interstellar moves down two tiers . Dune moves up to All Time omg it's beautiful . Arrival moves down one or two tiers . Tenet moves up two tiers to Awesome for how entertaining it's and how captivating John David Washington is. No problem with your rankings of course. Id probably even move Sicario above Inception maybe. Oh , and Blade Runner 2049 is my favorite of all
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought Batman Begins looked scary back in 2005 because I was 11 years old back then and I thought it looked scary and I was too scared to go watch Batman Begins in theaters, one of my biggest regrets ever 😭😂
I've yet to see prisoners. As a parent, it's been hard to hit play. There's a couple others of his that I have not looked up. Great list! I agree with most of your order. I thought Tenet got better and better as I rewatched it. I would probably swap it with Enemy on your list if it was mine.
I agree I think tenet has a certain rewatch ability to it that makes it special, although I think this is primarily due to the lack of intensity, James Bond esque style, and often low-stakes feeling that doesn’t exist in much of his other work. I look at Tenet as the perfect Nolan Mission impossible/James bond Film but in terms of quality, it’s not close to Dunkirk imo
Amazing video dude, so cool. Yeah these two are getting closer and closer.

12. Tenet
11. Incendies

7. Arrival (As a 14 year old watching this in the theatre I thought it was the most boring film of all time, but luckily I’ve matured enough to love this film. Only all timers from here on)
6. Prisoners
5. Interstellar (3-5 are pretty much interchangeable for me, and this one gets better every time I watch it)
4. Oppenheimer (Maybe Nolan’s most impressive film, could move up even higher after having more time to reflect on it)
3. Memento
2. The Dark Knight
1. Inception
The problem with Polytechnique is that it is one of the most unrewatchable movies. I get depicting the tragedy as something truly horrifying, but I would never want to be saddled with these types of films for life.
Hahaha your Bane impression send me😂😂
Great tier list. You could do a David Fincher vs Zack Snyder tier list around The Killer and Rebel Moon. Yes, they have very different styles, but I think it would be really cool.
Se7en alone is better than anything Zack ever produced... To prove that wasn't by luck on Fincher's side, he did it again with Gone girl and Mindhunter.
Appreciate the ideas!
What? Fincher is miles above Snyder. Fincher's filmography is immaculate. Snyder's is polarising stylistic trash.
Really? Insulting the man who directed Fight Club and The Social Network by comparing him to Snyder?
@@anurodhpathak9725 Fr. These Snyder fans are so delusional.
Top 5
1 the dark knight
2 inception
3 memento
4 arrival
5 Oppenheimer
Nolan has some great movies, but in most of them there's someting I don't like. The sound design in his later films, the entire third act of Interstellar, the way he films some action scenes, 50% of Tenet, the disappointing and unrealistic nuclear explosion in Oppenheimer (CGI was really needed there and he has used it before with spectacular results, like in Interstellar's black hole), etc. With Villeneuve's films I've always felt completely satisfied, the only exception being the anticlimactic ending of Dune: Part 1 and a couple scenes he decided to cut in that film.
Inception was bonkers on first view, but when I rewatch it I think the "magic-nonsense" is more glaring. Still a great movie, but honestly The Prestige is my favorite Nolan movie. The Batman trilogy was good, the best batman movies, but I don't lose my mind over them like a lot of people do, personally I even prefer Watchmen director's cut.
Amazing video and an amazinv concept Austin!
This is fantastic. My two favourite directors too.
Do note that Dunkirk took place in World War 2, not World War 1.
What about when Killers of the Flower Moon comes out, a Martin Scorsese vs Steven Spielberg tier ranking? Or maybe Quentin Tarantino vs Paul Thomas Anderson?

now this is gonna be a tough watch
Lol
For me Dunkirk is Nolan's masterpiece because he has a problem with exposition but with Dunkirk he delivered the purest form of audiovisual storytelling whilst still having minor character moments. Yes they're somewhat one dimensional, but they're supposed to be anyone. It's just a cinematic display of the event. The ticking score, the cinematography by Hoyte Van Hoytema essentially builds an entire runtime of suspense. There's not scenes and scenes of people walking around and explaining.
💯 Dunkirk & Tenet are just phenomenal, didn't understand why people hate those movies.for me Insomnia is the least favorite Nolan movie
@@rapsodicreaper because Tenet was messy, and dunkirk have unnecessary non linear story it takes away the intensity from the movie

I think you're the first English speaker I heard saying "Incendies" perfectly 👌
After seeing Oppenheimer twice, I seriously think this is not only Nolan's best movie but my favorite movie of his. My favorite Denis movie is either Dune (which I need to rewatch) or Prisoners. It'd be a long video but with Killers of the Flower Moon coming out later in the year, a Scorsese vs Spielberg or Cameron ranking would be interesting.

As a French Canadian, I'm biased obviously. But I do think that Dennis' movies often have big flaws that most people don't see. For example, I do think Dennis' Bladerunner is a better movie experience than the original Bladerunner, but the original has more "scifi IQ". Similar thing for Arrival, I think it's a bit presumptuous that humans would be the ones finding a way to communicate with "animal-like" aliens, when those aliens are space-faring, potentially faster than light species, and somehow they wouldnt have technology to communicate with us, and then they would simply try to speak their version of english to us, which is inkblots. It's a good movie though. And since I'm rooting for Dennis, I'm glad most people don't notice or make a big deal out of those flaws.

I consider Enemy a 2014 movie, as it was released much more wider that year.
Nolan movies are epic, technically brilliant and Little emotional where Denis movies are brutal ,intimate and emotionally draining.
The Perfect Director would be someone who has Nolan's ideas and script/screenplay writing, Villeneuve's stylistic cinematography/camera shots, Russo brothers' action sequences, and maybe Cameron & Spielberg's thematic magic and world immersion.
Nolan is stronger- he doesn't need to do adaptations (other than Oppenheimer), he is a world builder. Denis is not. Denis was more visceral, but this ship sinked years ago with Sicario.
I haven't seen anything from Villeneuve prior to 2013 or Oppenheimer yet.

My comment might go long but have to put this thought out, thanks in advance if u read my comment fully-
I would say that Nolan and Denis are both equals for now even though I am still a Nolan fan(bcs Interstellar specifically is very personal movie to me being physics fan). Here are reasons why I consider them equals.
1)Idea-Nolan's movies are ingrained with intitutive ideas meanwhile Denis movies have philosophical depth. It reflects how they are.
2)Difference btw them- Nolan is more versatile then Denis and Denis is better visual story teller than Nolan and here's why-
Nolan does movies that are tight with script like inception, Interstellar, prestige etc and also slow paced world building movies like Denis in Dunkirk. And also the movie Oppenheimer sent the mssg of importance of scientific mind and didn't feel like it tried to justify Oppenheimer was bcs of Nolan's ability to add everything and yet not making it confusing and thts versatility.
Denis is better visual story teller than Nolan bcs if u observe most nolan films have characters who explain about the world he has created to other characters (indirectly explaining to us). Meanwhile Denis movie have very less dialogue and tells the story more visually (which is extremely hard) like in Blade Runner and arrival or even dune. At the end it's worthless to debate who is better bcs u just wanna put urself in theatre have a popcorn and just immerse urself in their movies. have a good day!!
You sir, get a subscription! Although: Dunkirk is certainly based on World War II, and not I ;) 32:35
True!!
New dad brain I guess 😂
Once I start making movies, I hope I will be considered as one of the best directors and get tier lists like this.
I think Pitof, the director of Catwoman, wins
someone else may have said this, but Denis actually made Enemy before Prisoners, but for some reason they released Prisoners first
Probs my fav directors working rn
Insomnia doesn't fill the gaps like memento cause the script was not co-written by him and his brother.
My favorites are Arrival, Batman Begins,Sicario, Tenet, and probably interstellar.
My favorite director between the two is Christopher Nolan
Prisoners is beyond underrated. Its amazing

I haven’t seen many of the films (and intend to change that soon).
The only Denis films I’ve seen is Dune which is hard to judge fairly until Part 2. I wasn’t the biggest fan of the first one on its own
For Nolan my rankings has to be Inception, Oppenheimer, Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Dark Knight Rises, Tenet
Incendies not being in the All Time tier is wrong. I know this is your opinion and I appreciate it. But it’s just better than Inception and The Dark Knight. I don’t make the rules. Here’s my top 5:
5. Sicario/The Dark Knight
4. Blade Runner 2049
3. The Prestige
2. Prisoners
1. Incendies
Gosh they're both amazing.
