Ok damn im super psyched about this course now. Our teacher isn't the most inspiring and passionate person so this helped me want to learn this more. Thanks! 👍
I'm curious, if you don't mind telling me, what was exactly your program and at what level (university, college, high school, other)(what kind of school) were you learning it?
I have been reading some conference papers and journals about mems (ex: IEEE MEMS , Tranducers, Sensor and actuators) I found that there is no profound progress in MEMS technologies. From these two factors ( low profit in mems business and slow progress in mems technologies), I concluded that we can not expect for the bright future for mems. Thanks. Best regards.
@@LordAtlas10 There has been no innovation in MEMS for 10 years. The situation around MEMS research is much worse than that time when I left that comment. Please check the DARPA project list concerning on MEMS, You will find that DARPA stopped funding on MEMS over 10 years ago.
is it because the small size of these components making them highly automated process to manufacture and they fit into something much larger makes them introduced at the low end of the manufacturing chain? it is like the inkjet probably the ink packs are expensive but not because of the printing mem on them but because they are sold at extravagant price by the printer makers for using their product brand
I'd like to know if MEMS could improve the current state of audio engineering as it relates to musical instruments. There has always been a gap in this field. When the transistor was downsized in the form of what became 'large scale integrated circuits' or LSI it opened many doors for the electronic organ in particular. Unfortunately the tonal character of these LSI equipped organs was somewhat inferior to earlier technology, including the wonderful tones using discrete transistors. Digi's worse
Dear statikreg; Thanks for your comments. The reason why I mentioned "there is no future for MEMS" is that we could not get enough profits from the mems business. As you said, some restricted area concerning on the smart phones and tablets could get some profit, however the mems devices for large volume market is insanely cheap for manufacturer.
This is insanely impressive. I had no idea that the microscopic mems could move as well. I thought it was just about computation with stationary parts. Does cpus have movable parts also?
An accelerometer in an automobile needn't be so "micro." Of course there are many other applications where size matters, however, this was a questionable example.
But using micro sensors mean you can mass produce them for both automobile and small applications... And many more. All with just one design and production
I don't understand why Professors keep referencing youtubes from almost a decade ago when there are so many newer, better ones which incorporate newer technology. Too lazy to update their own lesson plans?
Yep. Not much more to expect than NEMS at the moment. But on the other hand... who knows what the future brings. Maybe in a hundred years they will be laughing at this because we didn't know how easy it is to build QEMS, SEMS or BEMS out of some quantums, strings or Bosons -or whatever-. You could have self replicating Quantum-Bots that feed on Neutrinos, crawl into atoms and change the element from inside to make gold from lead... sounds good to me :) ... Ok, now they will laugh anyway ;)
MEMS - growing at about 15% CAGR - there are over 30 MEMS in your smart phone, BAWS, SAWS, 6 or more mics, 6 axis accelerometers ..... Every time you go to the theatre, the projection system is built on the DMD chip, each with 8-12 million mirrors on a chip (usually three are used in theatre projection systems). No future - hah - look at Yole Development Group for data.
Damn, those are some pretty dank MEMS.

11 years later, this video is still pretty accurate.

Humans are incredible! It's just astonishing to compare this kind of technology to what we were capable of just a few hundred years ago.
Indeed. Considering you are a dog.
oh its good to know that dankness runs a large portion of my life
Great video!
I wish it had some links of suggested readings from the author so interested people could learn more about MEMS technology,
I came here trying to scour some memes and this is what I found instead. Knowledge.
The music makes it real

Any reading material links?
Thanks.

Nice video.. and I liked the music.
very nice explanations and imaging too
gives better understanding...
of most complicated MEMS devices....
I just misspelled memes and ended up here lmao
This video and music smell, taste, sound and look like the nineties ^^
Awsome video! Mems is the reason we have small tiny mics in the cell phones we use
Great music.. thanks
Where are the dank memes?
An Excellent video. Very well composed. Nice explanation. I like it very much!!
spicy *mems* you got there

great technology to invest alot of money in

Right...except for smart phones and tablets..... and all the things they mentioned in the video...
Amazing! 😍

memes really took off

CPUs are all solid state and shouldn't have any moving parts, assuming you're not counting electrons.
good video
