Mixed Media Technique - Faux Cloisonne

  • A mixed media tutorial showing the Faux Cloisonne technique which uses black UTEE and mica powders.
Full insturctions here (thanks to BeyondBracelets for writing these down for me):
You will be using heavy weight chipboard for this project.
Cover the chipboard shape in black/color gesso (or acrylic paint) don't forget the edges and back side.
Use a Watermark Stamp Pad and dab the pad on to entire surface of the painted chipboard. The watermark stamp pad will make the enamel stick. (Product used: (BLACK) Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel. The enamel MUST be black! No clear!)
Now using the watermark stamp pad and embossing enamel coat the piece a total of three times working on the projects surface in layers. Don't forget to use the heat gun after each application to set the embossing enamel.
Dab the triple coated enamel surface with a versamark watermark stamp pad (to moisten the surface to make the powder stick better) and then use "Perfect Pearls" Banger acid-free perfect pearl (mica powder) decorate the surface in random blotches with colors of your choice. (Any mica powder will work. Perfect Pearls & Pearl Ex are used in the video.)
Choose bold and open patterned stamps and make sure to ink the stamp with permanent gold ink prior to pressing it down. (Product used for permanent gold ink: Archival pigment ink pad "Brilliance" Galaxy Gold- The ink needs to be permenant or permenant upon heat setting)
Lastly use your heat gun on the piece prior to pressing your ink filled stamp down. The heat gun will soften the layers enough for the embossing to work its way around the stamp decoration. Slowly pull up the stamp and there will be an indent left behind from the stamp- the gold metallic ink will be recessed in to the stamped area.

HI! I too find crafting calming. It also helps me with stress & depression. I know these things are expensive, but it is worth it especially if it helps give us relief...the fact that we've created something unique and beautiful is a bonus. Please start again!

watched this a dozen times - just mesmerizing & stunning work - you have inspired me to start doing crafts again - I lost thousands of dollars worth of craft supplies in a house fire (to the ground fire) & just never went back - my doctor recently told me I HAD to find a stress reliever or die - I am at the MAX on bp meds & watching this I recalled how very CALMING & cathartic it was to create - I'm trying to find people getting rid of their excess craft stuff LOL expensive 4 a fixed income!

No you can't please everyone, but you make a lot of artists wannabe's like me VERY pleased!

Rach you are simply marvolous and I adore you. Don't let the buggers change a thing about you. You inspire me so much every day. I have a lot of health problems and I can't wait to get well so I can get back into my artwork and do things like you are. People want spoken cause they can't watch something through while they do something else...well if they want to learn how to do it they have to actually pay attention and thats it. Great videos I keep going in for marathons of them at a time.

@alohachristine Hi, Thanks for your comment & question. I haven't found another way to achieve this look without UTEE. The reason you need several layers is to create enough thickness for the stamping to leave a good impression. Epoxy would not work for this technique as it is self levelling and the impression would be lost. Hope that helps, hugs, Rachel
