I love how the Todoroki family is handled in this series. Cause you have Endeavor, who had abused and/or neglected all of his family, but is now trying to redeem himself and become a better person. But he's not just automatically forgiven by the entire family and each family member is different in their reactions to his growth. It feels very natural to how real life families in these types of situations would be going forward.

For me I was severely abused by my mother. For years I did forgive her, but I couldn’t forgive her cause she wasn’t trying to change. That’s why for me I like endeavors character, he’s not perfect but he can reflect on his past deeds and does change. For me if my mom did try to be a better person I would forgive her. It was so bad she basically used me as a punching bag, punished me for anything to the point that I was basically mute and socially awkward for years. I was lucky to have a good father that I could see on weekends, but my mom hated the bond we had and tried tons of times to break it or even destroy my father in anyway she could. My dad tried his best but because she’s the mom she had the main custody. If it wasn’t for hun I probably would have ended myself cause he gave me hope for a better life. Without that hope, only abuse and loneliness I doubt I could have lasted as long as I did. ( it was from 3 years old, my dad saw it, till I was 16)

    • @theebattlemedic3098
      @theebattlemedic3098 Před 5 měsíci

@@loserhimself4044 I relate so much to this I recently went no contact with my moms side of the family. I kept trying to be there but they genuinely don’t like me. My mom decided that for my birthday we’d celebrate her birthday and her sisters birthday. I’ve almost always had to share my birthday. Didn’t even get my first birthday gift till I was 13 it was McDonald toys. She didn’t even hand it to me. Two years ago my family decided to celebrate my cousins birthday on my birthday. Told me to wait a week and then barely did anything. So finally I messaged my mom saying hey I’m not okay with sharing my birthday again. I gave examples and even an example that didn’t relate to them to show it’s not just them(my step mom always overlooks my birthday and wants to skip 2 weeks for her son’s birthday. I wouldn’t mind but she’s always focused on her kids and ignored me which I should be used to but I’ve decided to care more about myself even my wife notices the unfair treatment that I usually ignore) but anyways my mom rather than speak like adults decided to show and tell everyone how I’m bringing up stuff and hurting her emotionally, I showed my wife and she agreed I was fairly respectful and just saying I don’t want to share my birthday. My siblings sided with her 3 out of 5 sent me messages saying essentially how they view me. One said I always complain which is crazy cause his idea of complaining is me and my wife drive him 8 hours to his college and on the way in a mall i say ima check this store or saying where I want to eat. Mind you if they say they don’t want it and want something else I’ve always just gone with their decision. Another tried to emasculate me by saying your grown get over it, if you wanna be a man then talk face to face. I’m used to those comments by my mom, they don’t work on me. She would usually say your the man of the house when I became 18 to try to get me to do what she wants. But I always found it gross, it’s probably how she tries to control the men she dates so to say it to me is weird. The youngest ended up saying my gifts to him aren’t great he’s becoming an adult( he’s 14 and they favorite gifts or “adult” gifts are Jordan’s very adult like) I thought maybe my sister would have my back cause everyone else had abandoned her 2 years ago and I had her back. And nope she went with my mom on vacation and keeps saying how amazing she is. I haven’t talked to them or seen them since Christmas. They also ignored me on my birthday. Mind you I didn’t want to go anywhere, do anything or even get anything. I just wanted to not share my birthday cause everything I’m the last thought. It made me realize this is how they view me and how little they care about me. So I decided that’s. I’m done, I’ll consider forgiving them only if they ever apologize but they’re not the type to apologize let alone mean it. So if I have to go the rest of my life without them I’ll do that. Anyways I’m sorry I completely get the whole what do you mean that never happened feeling. I was luckily I got one cousin that said in front of my wife how guilty he felt growing up seeing only some of my abuse. I was just happy someone admitted it happened in front of her. I hope you get that and more

5:14 Just a heads-up: The anime makes it seem like this is much more about domestic physical (or some even think sexual) abuse than it actually is.
Apparently, however, the "only" (one being one too many and shouldn't be played down, of course) instance of physical violence is the one we see in the flashback. The majority of Endeavor's "crime" was mental abuse, mainly through neglect. That's why Natsuo says he doesn't really have any memories of him. Because Endeavour hyperfocused on Shoto and segregated him from the others, essentially neglecting everyone else and giving them the impression that they are failures or worthless.

There is a lot of symbolism in this fight, He receives a wound on the same side as his son Shoto and a wound in the stomach like All might both to make him understand the pain he inflicted on his family and the pain of becoming number 1. In this fight he literally becomes a phoenix thanks to the wings of Hawks, he will burn, die and come back to life hoping to become someone better.

The thing in question is if people can change and if after they have changed or while they are in the process of it if you should keep holding the things that they did in the past over their heads as if it's the current them.
There is a difference between holding someone accountable for actions they took when they overstep boundaries and going "Remember when you did that bad thing" over and over even when it's irrelevant.
Endeavor will perfectly save a kid with zero collateral damage and people will be like, he's so bad at his job because he hit his wife 8 years ago. That's not necessary or helpful in any way unless he starts impeding on the family's boundaries.

His first major fight he puts down the Nomu obsessed with the strongest, who combines quirks like he did with his children. And the beginning scene where we find out he’s trying to repent for what he did to his wife+family.

Endeavor's theme song pretty much sums up why he is one of my favorite characters:
    Just another hero
Can't you hear cries for help?
    Just a hero

Sick and tired of my weakness
The more I buck for the power
    The more I'm broken
    More I'm frightened
But that's the time I must be strong
Well I damage myself again and again
It's simply for the victims of sorrow
I'll be the man even if I'm just another hero
    Just another hero
    Don't hide myself in regret
    Face my silhouette
    I'm the most passionate
    It's my identity
    I'm never gonna give up
    Never gonna look back
Can't take on such an ugly war
There are many cries for our help
There are hopes for all the heroes who scar over their hurt
I am the heir of the cup
Ain't no stroke of my luck
Can't stand back or just stay away
There are many cries for our help
There are hopes for all the heroes who fight for our world
    How do I live?
    How do I dream?
    Sometimes wanna sing the blues
    Must tighten my reins
    But hard to obey
You know I'm not perfect enough
How do I grieve? How do I scream?
I just wanna be the guy
    Yes, I'm still overwhelmed

I can write an essay on this ep, this is the first time i truly 'rooted' for Endeavor. He, and the show, acknowledges he was terrible and caused A LOT of pain, how do you forgive someone like that, but it also showed, through that AMAZINGLY cool fight, that he really is trying to change and sacrifice, and has given up on the pursuit of power and instead trying to be a hero and reform himself so that he can be someone Shoto is proud of. Really excellently written, so emotional, honestly I never thought Id root for Endeavor after seeing how he treated his family, but the question is posed, can someone like that change and can others forgive him and look at him as someone to be counted on. Anyway, essay over, GREAT reaction, really felt that emotion from both of you, which was my reaction to this ep as well. Thanks you! Great ending!!!

  • @LondoBell93
    @LondoBell93 Před rokem +1

To highlight some symbolism in the writing we’ve had all season:
Heroes being a shining beacon of hope to citizens is a really big topic in this season. The opening monologue intros always show All Might from behind standing in front of a blinding, brilliant light. Now he’s gone away and the next symbol is expected to shine just as brightly.
If you go back to when Nighteye told Deku he wasn’t worthy of One for All, he said society needs a “dazzling” hero, and he called Deku a “dim” one. He believed Mirio was a suitable replacement instead (and remember how Tamaki Amajiki says Mirio shines like the sun). Then on his deathbed Nighteye tells the heroes they must continue to smile, otherwise there won’t be a “bright future”.
Even when Deku fought Gentle and La Brava, when Deku has Gentle beat La Brava is trying to hit him and begging Deku not to take Gentle away from her. She says Gentle is her whole world, treats Deku like he’s the villain in that scene, and even says something like “what bright future? I have nothing without Gentle”.
The final bit of big symbolism is that in this fight - Endeavor’s big moment - his fire burns so brightly that he’s literally illuminating the city. All Endeavor’s attacks have an illumination theme too, like Flashfire Fist and Prominence Burn. Even though we believe he’s not worthy of being #1 because of the kind of person he is, we’re being shown he actually is worthy because he is that literal shining light that people need right now.

      @magortom Před rokem

I think it's just different stakes. People literally just assume stakes mean death regardless of whether it contributes to or weakens the narrative.
And oftentimes my hero is just taking a measured approach to building high-stakes moments as opposed to just telling you that things are high stakes and killing some people so that you can feel artificial stakes cause people scared of death. MHA stakes from like season 3 of mha and onward have been that if society doesn't find a meaningful way to fill the Gap that all might left, all of Japan will literally go to shit and hundres of thousands of people will die in the streets because he was the only one holding that chaos back. Basically since the show starts japan is on their way to downfall.

What a brilliant episode this is! The Overhaul arc and this episode alone are the reasons why I think season 4 is the best of the lot. So well done, and I still get goosebumps after watching god knows how many times.
And the Todorokis, they just have something about them. A lot of this story, while enjoyable, isn't exactly written particularly well. But the Todorokis are.
I remember reading this in the manga as well. A chapter ended after Endeavor was struck by the Nomu and lying on the ground. It looked like the attack went through his head and I can still remember being in disbelief. Waiting for a week for the next chapter to then see this resolved. And the anime did well. The voice acting, the music, most of the important visuals were all there.
And even the "minor" parts that tend to get overlooked. Young Endeavor being the only one to attempt to bridge the insurmountable gap to All Might. The flower petal falling as Endeavor gets struck. The second that made us all think Endeavor is gonna sacrifice himself. And the exhilaration when he is the one who stands at the end, striking a pose resembling the one All Might did after fighting AFO.
No matter what one thinks about Endeavor as a character, which of course is deeply flawed (which to many certainly is the appeal - the degree to which he's flawed might be different, but that's why people like characters like Vegeta oder Bakugo) - I think all of us can agree on the brilliance here.

Typically when abusive/crappy parents are written in modern fiction , they are basically written as complete one dimensional caricatures. 100% awful and irredeemable. One of the more complicated issues and I think it stand out more than ever today is punishment vs rehabilitation. We as society have function as punishment as primary way of dealing with those who do wrong. But pattern keeps happening of society still treating them like garbage even after punished and so in turn they go back to doing the wrong things again. We act surprised that they didn't become a better person. We don't have to forgive but if we don't show people a better path to walk down and give them a chance then they will always walk down the wrong path. We can be better people but we can't say we want a better world if were are not working towards it for everyone and that includes even those who might not deserve it right now.

Endeavour tried to surpass him in the past, and when he realised he couldn't he took it out on his family by only seeing them as a way to produce an heir that could do it.
But now All Might is gone, and his son is too young to take the spot of number one. So he has to step up, even though he knows he isn't good enough, and he knows he's just a terrible person for what he did. He's just a broken man trying his best to do what needs to be done. And that's why this fight hits so hard.

I feel like most stories would've had Endeavor be this really toxic guy, have him do this one epic fight and die, but as he's dying, his family would forgive him. So glad that's not what Horikoshi decided to go with. Endeavor was a horrible parent, but he also was the only one actively trying to catch up to All Might. He was the only one who didn't just give a sigh of relief and leave everything to All Might. He kept trying. And we see now that he's trying to become better. He's acknowledging his mistakes. Does that mean his family has to forgive him? No. Endeavor could do a million good deeds for the world and it would still be his family's right to never want to talk to him after everything he's done. But even if his family hates him, even if the public doubts him, he's still going to give it his all.
Although, it's crazy to think that Dabi casually released a creature that was so powerful it nearly took out the Number One hero. We haven't seen the League in a while. Shigaraki did say it was "their turn" now. Guess he kept his word.
