    This was my grail for several years and finally scored one a couple months ago and am incredibly happy with it. Of course I don't close my frame locks with my thumb like many do. I pull straight back with my index finger and like you said, moving straight over equals no lockstick. I am thrilled that I got one before they were discontinued.

    I find it frankly astonishing that we're talking about mushy detent and lock rock on a $600+ knife. Those are not issues I would expect at that price point. I've considered getting a paysan previously, and I would have lost my mind if after tracking one down it had those problems.

    • @LOLRabbleRouser

      Yep, same here. $600 for a *production knife* with these problems is a joke. A very, very nasty joke.

    I've handled a custom Rasenti and it was hollow ground to sub 0.010".
    It was ground amazing.
    This thing is almost disrespectful to Peter Rasenti.
    And the guy who I was proxy for, was buying the $1800 custom for use.
    He literally told me feel free to use it while i had it.
    Pretty wild that we're patting Spyderco on the back for fixing lock rock, blade play, and lock stick.
    And the reason you said the clip was "ok" 3 years ago was because the knife was $450 back then lol.
    Standard clip on $450... ehh OK

    The lock stick pisses me off to no end. It's inexcusable. But there are three magical properties about this knife that are just sublime, making it one of my favorites.
    FIRST: the weight of the blade. A massive slab. It feels like you're wielding a small sword in the most satisfying way. And when it swings out and clicks into place, it's just... perfect. Perfect.
    SECOND: the handle being slender, less bulky than you'd expect paired with this blade. It looks like it wouldn't be enough to grab. But to me it feels fitting for a high-performance knife for someone who knows how to use a knife and doesn't need ergos that feel like training wheels.
    THIRD: The low cutting plane. It's lower than the grip plane, like a chef's knife. I love that and wish more knives had it.

    I agree 100% on Spyderco edge bevels. I bought 3 native 5’s , 2 in Maxamet, and 1 in s110v. The edge bevel was wavy and opposite on both sides. Those should have been marked and sold as seconds at a discount. Since they were not I have a feeling this is standard. To be fair they use more steels and have the best heat treatment in the game.

    I was able to grab one of these a few weeks ago and love it. Iv wanted one for a long time so happy to finally get one. Not happy about the price $644.00 but you can’t put a price on something you really like and want and it is made very well. I’m definitely happy with mine and everything you talked about was fixed except for the lock stick which isn’t bad at all on mine. I can manipulate it without much problem and lock stick. You just have to get it in the right place. Everything else is tight and the action is great.

  • @Bapao76
    @Bapao76 Před rokem +3

    I've fixed heavy lockstick like that on two of my knives, but it involves polishing the lockbar insert with diamond sharpening stones. A lot of OEMs don't grind the lock bar horizontally, but vertically instead and its often a VERY rough job (even on more expensive knives). That leads to the stick. Not saying this would remove the stick entirely on this one, but you can reduce it to a point that its no longer that obtrusive. Either way, we shouldn't be getting knives with the issue in the first place.

  • @seansmith4183
    @seansmith4183 Před rokem +2

    That mechanical lock issue is very unfortunate. The edge issue is also egregious. Wow, it is a little surprising for Spyderco, but an honest review for sure. Don't most titanium integrals go for around $600? The price isn't as offensive to me as the knife's flaws out of the factory. QC issues. Not good.

  • @Barryhatchet
    @Barryhatchet Před rokem +1

    Spyderco is my favorite US made brand because they keep the pricing attainable in most cases. The PM2 is tough to beat in general. I have trouble liking any button, liner or frame lock knives after having used the compression lock as it’s so good. The difference in price between a PM2 Crucarta to a base model Shaman is absurd though, but I’d like to have a Shaman because of the contoured handle.

    Lock stick just kills a knife. My first expensive knife was the Emerson CQC-15. I was VERY new to knife collecting. Unfortunately the criticism of Emerson knives was well founded. The blade itself is pretty good, though I found I’m not a huge fan of chisel grinds. It also has a very light detent. I’m not sure if that’s to help with the auto-open using the wave feature, but it’s really weak. But the worst of it was the lock stick. It’s horrendous. By far the worst lock stick I’ve ever experienced. I finally found a hack online to apply Sharpie to the base of the blade. That solved the lock stick, but I have to reapply it frequently, and in my opinion, there’s just no excuse for this kind of manufacturing failure in a knife that’s most of $300. The wave feature is very cool and works great, but the fit and finish is terrible.

    In my opinion, the only reason to buy spyderco would be to try out new, exotic steels. Spyderco does super steel really well. But other than that, their QC is kinda iffy, and they don't deliver a whole lot of value for what they offer. That being said, i do own a pm2 in s35vn

    The detent is hilariously too light, and the clip was replaced immediately.
    Kinda disappointing for the price.

    I’m also a big Spyderco fanboy, but I think releasing a flawed halo knife to the public (original Paysan) then waiving the flag of QCI to fix it is being disingenuous. Build a good knife first, that’s already trouble free and adequately tested. QCI is for minor evolution to an already well executed product, like when they changed the Spydiechef hardware to something slightly more stain resistant.

    I bought one about 4-5 months ago. Terrible lock stock. So bad I had trouble getting it to close. Anyway… ultra disappointed. Should have contacted Spyderco but didn’t. Sits in a box in a drawer now useless. (Looks great though 😂) $644. Lmfao. Everything should work perfect. Competition is too fierce nowadays to let this go.
