@@Alaskan-Armadillo because it then opens up doors to follow-up questions that I may not have answers to. I grew up as a TCK - third culture kid. It means I spent my formative years outside of my parents' home countries and cultures and have no experiences and knowledgeable of living there. But if I say, "I'm ___", it's natural for people to start asking questions about the place, the culture, things to do there etc. And when I can't answer, they get confused and ask for clarification and then I have to delve into my whole life story to a complete stranger. It's exhausting. It's also condescending to assume that just because someone looks a certain ethnicity, they aren't a local. The world's becoming a melting pot of different people; if they say they're Canadian, British, American etc. please just nod and go along with it unless they volunteer more information.

My friend's family (great grands) came to Canada from China in the early 1900's. Both sides.
So, ALL her grandparents and parents are Canadian, born here, and people still either ask her "Where are you from?" (She tells them 'Victoria') or Chinese people just assume she speaks Chinese (she doesn't though she can sort of understand a little bit of Cantonese or Mandarin) and talk to her in Chinese.
(She went on a trip to China for the first time when she turned 50 and got called "foreigner" a lot.đŸ€Ł)

@@umathewu has nothing to do with being yt or poc. In the US it’s an entirely different issue than in Africa. A lot of POC communities in the US have a long history of being suppressed and exploited despite having built today’s America and living there for generations, by asking them repeatedly you let them know that you think they can obviously not be American and that is racist. Imagine a yt person says to a literal Indigenous American: “But you could not be from here, you look Asian (to me)”. If someone is Black and you ask them “where are you from/what is your ethnicity” they might really just don’t know where their ancestors are from, because colonialists back then kidnapped Africans to enslave them and took away all their history. How big are the chances that a yt person living in Africa doesn’t know their “origin”? Overall - and this goes for everywhere - you can ask people once and if they don’t say then, just read the room and leave it alone.

People just get curious, it isn’t necessarily malicious. It can just seem that way coming from a different race/ethnicity. It’s put into perspective with the same one. I’m part Puerto Rican on my grandmother’s on my mother’s side and a few months ago I came across Puerto Ricans at our little midwestern Cosco and got all excited. Cause other than my grandma here and her family in Florida I rarely see other Puerto Ricans. We ran across them again and my dad just straight-up asked them where they’re from. I think the key was he was super casual about it (given he’s of Mexican descent and obviously his wife, my mom, is half Puerto Rican). They weren’t bothered by it and just answered casually. I was all happy I got It right (cause I couldn’t hear their accent, I could only see the way they were dressed and carried themselves). We’ll probably never see them again, but it is definitely a core memory.
On the flip side, I’ve had tons of kids of Mexican descent ask me that with a nasty attitude, so even among similar people it also depends on how its asked.

It confuses the crap out of everyone here. Bloody white Africans, as if there are black Europeans. :-| Mind you, when I moved to and lived 8 years in Portugal, I was also asked where I was really from, but really? But to be honest, more often than me, my non-European heritage colleagues here in Austria are constsntly asked where they are from even though they were born here and speak German in the local accent, even dialect.
