You know this release of the entire first season has really shown me how much of Last Week Tonight I’ve actually never seen
I was wondering if John Oliver started dying his hair haha
Thought. I was the only one 😮 still love all of them
Is that what's going on ... I was a little lost with the old references lol. Thanks.
Same. I've only ever seen the main story segments, like Sugar in this case.
Sobering, yet wonderful to see these original shows, complete. Thank you to everyone at Last Week who made this possible. And thank you, John, for everything. Don't leave--we still need you!
Isnt it nice to see what we were worried about before 2016.
Doug Ford is from a literal crime family, and he's still running Ontario, lol. Canada's Orban.
in a way though its nice, because more human rights are being put on the table but also sad because of the states and people rejecting it
i was so confused when he mentioned Gone Girl like it was a new movie, and then the court cases he was mentioning WEREN'T trump related. lol
It's actually insane how much of these topics are still relevant (more apparent in other episodes). That's what I really like.
Russian aggression, dietary public health, and international virus epidemics? Not everything's changed
The Jane Goodall interview, hysterical!
I'm glad John knew when to back off with the whole "pet" provocation-she really looked like she was going to take a swing at him.
But that vocalization lesson at the end was incredible.
@@GSBarlevbut they’re so funny-“
-“No They’re Not.”
Lol
I’m pretty sure these are edited together and he’s not the original interviewer
I love how she was a good sport, and man this lady has more balls than most of us, even if this interview is fake ^ ^
@@marcoiai
yeah, backbone!
& I love how she teaches this monkey in a suit..
You guys should include the original date the episode aired in the description for context.
Agreed, but jesus christ has a lot of this stuff stayed relevant 8 years later
It says the the season and episode number in the title. Stop being lazy and look it up if you want context.
@@luisgomez8635 ha, found the intern who's been uploading the shows up all night
@@luisgomez8635people are actually allowed to be a little bit lazy when they’re watching john oliver reruns, and a show that primarily covers recent news should be clear when the news they’re posting about isn’t recent because not everyone even knows that they SHOULD look up the date it aired.
why are you so offended that people are asking for the tiniest bit of convenience?
I’m rather enjoying how well these episodes have aged - as in, some of them are still current.
I am Canadian and unfortunately Doug Ford has been Premier of Ontario since 2018, the province that I live in. We call him Thuggy Dougy.
S1 E22 (aired October 26, 2014)
Thank you!!
Thanks John!
thank you so much for commenting it!
Now if only we could pin your comments on each of these videos and delete the obnoxious amount of comments asking (but not looking) for this information.
Very nice 🧐
I've been watching like 4 hours of John Oliver a day for the last week. Please send help
Me too help
You are not alone 😀
No. You guys are in a good place. Just lay back and take it in, Daddy Oliver ain’t gonna hurt you.
why, are you almost out of content?
@@distracted-dad At the time of my comment they were uploading every full episode from every earlier season. You can never run out of content on CZcams.
Doug Ford failed spectacularly in his 2014 run for Mayor but a lot of people forgot his constant screwups in that campaign and rewarded him with the Premiership of Ontario in 2018.
It’s 2024 and Doug, with his 2 terms in office, has continued to be a screwup.
I hate how literally no one voted in the last general election. Only around 40% of eligible voters casted ballots and that POS won. If most people voted we probably would've had an NDP government.
We need to vote him out next time. I think a lot more people have been affected by his greedy corrupt policies now and will be kicking him out, I know I will be.
@@AUG_XZABER it was 34% and took the premiership with only 18% of the popular vote of eligible voters. How sad is that.
@@Gaetano.94 I get so mad just thinking about it. I'm gonna volunteer for the NDP next election, because we need a government that supports labour rights and unions now more than ever, and because I hate Ford so much.
@@AUG_XZABER I agree with you. I'm a centrist (like most Canadians used to be) and not sure who I would be voting for.
Jane Goodall was top A category human being who understood the core values of respect and compassion and brought that message to the world. Thank you Jane Goodall for everything.
It's amazing to see the changes they made in pacing of the episode through out the first season.. especially these final episodes where John really found the "grove" we know and love in later seasons
*"groove" - Unless there was some part of this show that regularly features groves of oranges (aka orchards) that I've been missing out on all this time.
stupiddddd
@@moogle68They keep em in the studio audience; half the seats just have trees in pots
@@asamlos 😂 well played.
You and Jane Goodall was.a golden moment with a brilliant woman! Thank you🇺🇸
John Oliver is so lucky!
tbh, I love the "added sugars" line on food labels! I feel like we've really come a long way in random sugar getting added to things (or I just go out of my way to find things with zero or low added sugar). Cool to see something John Oliver highlighted actually came to pass!
Edit: The fact "added sugars" is in grams makes... complete sense to me? The serving sizes are measured in grams, now you can do easy math to find out that 50% of Honeycombs cereal is sugar. It's WEIRD that people say "22 tsps" of sugar like that MEANS ANYTHING (it's ~92g, btw).
Teaspoons aren't even weight measurements, they're volume measurements. Mixing up weight with volume has ruined many recipes
my daughter actually liked circus peanuts when she was little...she ate one at a kid's birthday party and was hooked LoL
I agree. When rewatching this I was like OMG i use that added sugar label all the time! I forgot it was a recent thing!
Grams actually make way more sense, because the amount of sugars you add varies depending on the type of sugar. For granulated, it's about 4.2 grams per teaspoon, but for a powdered sugar it's about 2,5 grams per tsp. So basically, teaspoons do not make sense as a measuring tool for added sugars.
@@Otto42 Oh? Interesting. I woulda thought powdered sugar would have a greater mass per volume than granular sugar... TIL
I love Jane Goodall so much. I was lucky enough to see her speak somewhat recently and she brings those stuffed animals with her everywhere apparently. She’s such an amazing woman and scientist.
Actually a fascinating study came out just last week about sentience among animals. There is now strong evidence that all vertibrae but also creatures like bees have a varying degree of sentience, self awareness and awareness of life. Many of us should really (re)consider our levels of empathy towards animals. The Jane Goodall interview was fantastic and great to see again.
As I continue to exist on this planet, I learn more and more that there are fewer and fewer black-and-white concepts than I thought. Barely anything in life and nature exists in such absolutes, and honestly I find that incredible.
Ever since i was a kid i found it to be an absurd concept that animals are incapable of thought, emotion and sentience. I even felt that plants were capable of these things and 40 years later researchers are proving my instincts to be correct
Anyone who's tried to connect with an animal can very obviously see that they are sentient and even have personalities. Sure, my cats are pretty dumb and cannot understand language well, but they're each as valid an existence as mine.
Well, first I'd point out that there being "a study" doesn't necessarily mean anything. Even the "anti-vaxxer" movement was/is based on one. (And I do mean literally one-- and all signs point to that study being merely an angle to promote a drug the man was seeking to profit off of.)
But while we're ruminating, the [myth] I'd love to have [debunked] is the idea that lobsters "don't feel pain" (supposedly due to the way their nervous system is designed), because that has always sounded like bull dropped by people trying to rationalize what would otherwise be unspeakable cruelty (boiling them alive).
@@timothysatyr6674Plants communicate with each other-and even share nutrients-though mycelial networks. It's absolutely fascinating.
What can I say, less grey hair, the problems seem almost cute - like Ebola coverage - damn, we were so young and naive. The Russian submarine/ minx also hits different.
This was pre-Ukraine, pre-Sweden-joining-NATO, and-most saliently-pre-Hvaldimir.
@@GSBarlev pre-COVID, pre-Trump, many “pre”s. Still a wonderful segment. The feeling of watching it when it came out and now is different, quite a few sad and cynical chuckles.
Oh, my fuck. I am a 33 year old white New Yorker and was at The Gutter last month. I feel attacked.
So cool that Goodall was kidding along with John. 😂
Jane Goodall... what a gift to the world! I remember seeing her in National Geographic when she was acknowledged for the work she was doing. Total female role model.
You’re welcome John. Toronto then voted him in and then gave you Doug Ford for Premier of the province of Ontario. Canadians must really love you.
"Sincerely, everyone who does not live in toronto" cue the rest of ontario crying cuz we're ALL infected with him now
Doug was not voted in as mayor of Toronto.
You really need to do an update on premier Doug ford
I love those crazy interviews! This show was and continues to be an absolute treasure!
He actually kept his promise. Cool
What was the promise? I think I might've missed something
@@MeepsNcheese There's no "might've" about it **snicker**
there needs to be a Doug Ford follow up now he is a premier
& how Ontario is in the worst condition ever. Please :)
Ya… we’re not great. It was like Ontario went “idiot proven criminal wannabe authoritarian generational wealth wastrel as president? Well WE should at least have an idiot unproven criminal with a criminal brother general wealth wastrel as premier! It’ll be just as … successful?”
I was thinking it was fun when he was only running for mayor and lost, but now he's the effin premiere 😢
I hate him so much.
And all the back door deals and favours he did for his rich buddies. How he was reelected after he scrapped rent control and screwed our healthcare workers during covid is beyond me, I've never seen so much homelessness in my city in my life, it's very sad. He's the Trump of Ontario, if not Canada. He's gotta go! I hope LWT does do a follow up!
His comedy is awesome, his humanity is earnest, any given episode of his show is a moral thermometer for our world. ROFL!!!! I f'ing love John Oliver
With the Scarface reference, missed opportunity to use Homer's quote... "In America, first you get the sugar, then you get the power, then you get the women."
Nominate John's hands for the superior gesture work Emmy.
Everyone’s TV watching pets would vote!
LOL - I Love Jane. You Too Together were awesome!
As a Canadian, apparently I can now blame John Oliver for Doug Ford being in charge of one of our provinces.
And we can thank Jimmy Kimmel for Rob Ford's popularity. I wish that never happened, imagine how different things would be......
@@TMercan31Rob was a good soul. He had his issues but he was an amazing mayor. He's personally helped my family a few times as councilman of North Etobicoke. Doug Ford is nothing compared to his brother. RIP
I discovered earlier this year that Kroger-brand ground Italian sausage has high fructose corn syrup added to it….
For all the americans, Doug Ford is now leading the province of Ontario.
This is like the third time he’s done an episode on sugar. He’s begging us to stop killing ourselves.
I mean, it's technically the first...
@@coalblooded well…it’s been a larger factor in episodes about other things
@@christopherparks2987 Nobody's arguing that
Jane Goodall seems like such a lovely person.
I paused at 2:49 and went down an hour and a half rabbit hole designing a shirt that had a mink on it.. Started with a hat.. Ended with no hat, still dope... Okay, back to the show!
Thank you for talking about sugar.
I stopped eating food that has added sugar a year ago and I read every ingredient table when I shop for food and it is scary how much sugar is added to food.
Sugar's in almost everything though. How do you just stop?
@@Onigirli Well they said stopped eating stuff with added sugar, nothing about natural occurring.
Is this where the whole Philomena Cunk phenomenon began?
So nice to finally see this episode on CZcams. I still have the cease and desist letter from HBO's lawyers from the time I torrented it, by the way - maybe John should ask us fans to mail them all in sometime.
Clamato was my go-to hangover cure back in the day.
Must have been all that sugar!
there's SUGAR in Dijon mustard. i bought some cooked and sliced roast beef at Gordon foods and sugar was one of the ingredients
John Oliver...you are the saint we did not deserve
This man (Doug Ford) is now Premier who sees himself as a mini Trump
I think most of us Ontarians see him as that too
Better sugar than high frutose corn syrup, this being used instead of sugar in most of those candies.
6:00 Thank god for that! Imagine what would happen if there was an infectious airborne virus that turned into a global pandemic
Not to minimize Covid, but airborn ebola would have been 50x worse. Absolutely recommend reading _The Hot Zone_ if you need a new reason to lie awake at night.
I just kicked all sugar. I've lost 40 lbs doing so. I used to stock vending machines as a kid so...
I already read labels a lot since I am allergic to artificial dyes, and keeping sugars in mind definitely is another thing I look for.
Thank you for releasing the entire first season from a current HBO subscriber! 🧡💛🧡
So, can't Americans recreate this wonderful time pre-Trump? 😢
Imagine in Trump met Rob Ford. Rob was the first guy i thought of when Trump was running.
They add sugar to stuff to cover up the increase shelf life chemical tastes.
Yes. But if you DO buy lunch meat with no additive, eat it quickly. Living alone, I put 2/3 in the freezer.
I can't believe this popped back up and made me think of Doug Ford
7:30 he may have broke the rule, but he broke it in the best way possible.
You know your product is shit when just saying the name and nothing more draws audience laughter😂😂😂
I had no idea this show had multiple segments.
You can pry my sugar and high fructose corn syrup out of my cold, dead, hands. 😁
Such a wonderful opening graphic!
And now...Doug Ford is running Ontario...into the ground
And now Doug Ford is a second term premier of Ontario and absolutely destroying our universal healthcare, environment, and more 🙃
Ya, thanks alot John! Ford is also responsible for doing away with rent control and now we have tent cities all over the province. How did he get reelected?
@@TMercan31 the whole province is going to shambles 🙃 I’m going to this Ontario health coalition protest may 30 I. Toronto against privatization so we can tell Ford just what we think
Right! It's fucking awful 😭 I don't understand how so many people voted for him once let alone twice! And how even more decided not to vote during the last election!?!?
@@TheCrayonMaster only 18% of Ontario voted in the election and he won with only 33% of the vote. So 800,000 out of 14,000,000 people of Ontario voted for this fraud. His brother Rob is rolling in his grave. His widow wife warned us about him.
The fact that he was elected twice is unconscionable, but I’m still baffled that her ever made it into office to begin with. Who looked at the man with no platform - the brother of Toronto’s infamous crack-smoking mayor - and went, “Yep, that’s our guy.” ??
Please revisit Doug Ford today.... you may be surprised 😢

So, so great of an episode.
what do you mean don't eat mystery mucus in the street!? That's my Sunday gone!
I'm getting so much philomena cunk vibe from these old john oliver interviews.
As a sweede, all I can say is that you nailed that accent 👌👌
10 years later and Doug Ford has shown he's far more corrupt and inept than we ever could've imagined.
I lost 20lbs in less than a month when i switched from regular pepsi to diet pepsi. 1 tsp of sugar is 4 grams of sugar.
Congrats on the lifestyle change!
You know I was 14 when I first saw these episodes and I did NOT get the jokes the way I do now lmaoooooo
Nailed it at the end Oliver, lol
Jane Goodall is a legend.
John Oliver, you might be taller than I, haven't measured but truly you are funnier... you made me pee 😂. Too good! Cheers
I definitely hope Jon is taller than l. I am 5'0"
I was so involved with this I had to eat a Little Debbie Spinwheel, which is 110 percent sugar, or a pound of Peenuts.
As a child, I went to the chimpanzee's tea party at the zoo. They don't do that anymore.
Toronto Update:
In 2014, Doug Ford lost to John Tory boring but practical political Conservative lawyer and talk show host. He won re-election twice in a row (2018 and 2022) before resigning suddenly in February 2023 after the Toronto Star revealed he was in an extramarital intimate affair with a city staffer in the mayor's office during 2022. In June 2023, Olivia Chow was elected mayor after a by-election, she had lost to Tory in third place in the 2014 election.
Meanwhile, in 2018 Doug Ford became the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party of Ontario and became Premier of Ontario with the election of a majority PC government in 2018, re-elected with another majority government in 2022, and still in office. Though he has had a fair share of scandals I shall leave you to google.

Back when everything was so simple.
Great Video!
Also instead of nutritional information being per serving it should be per container.
To be fair, it usually states how many servings are in a container
@@TMercan31 That's a fair point, and I hate that mental math skills are often not that great amongst most people, but even for me (and I think of myself good at mental math), I'd argue that 1. it can make it a step harder to process the nutritional info if I have to try to visualize it in my head (to do that math for the whole container) rather than just have it written out in front of me, and 2. I do think that companies are often misleading, especially with single-serving packages, by listing a serving as some ridiculous fraction of the whole package. Like NO, I realistically cannot only eat 1/5 of this package once opened 🙄 or "NO, 1/3 of this is not going to fill me up, why call that a serving?".
I also think that, just like in Europe, India, and other places, it'd make sense to also list nutritional info per standardized amount (like 100 g), because it makes it SO much easier to compare options and decide which one is healthiest. Sure, even if I won't eat 100 g in one sitting (or eat way more), being able to compare 100 g of different yogurt brands, tubs of hummus, etc. is SUPER helpful in helping me select the healthiest option.
"Premiere" Doug Ford.
I love 3 Weeks ago tonight.
A paperclip is a gram. So if something has 19 grams of sugar imagine 19 paperclips in a pile
I'm not really sure that that's how it works...
Ong i didnt realize this was nearly 10 years old until the rob ford bit rip
He was an amazing man. He's helped my family personally many times as councilman of North Etobicoke. Now we have his joke of a brother as Premier. Rob is rolling in his grave.
That's why I never ever got on a seesaw. I only rode teeter totters
Oh wow, David Schuster from Rebel HQ
“Yeah, I’m thinking I’m back”
It's funny, because it's literally common knowledge around the world that if you have to lie, steal, or go above and beyond to cover up something, then that means you shouldn't be doing it and you are a fraud, a liar, and corrupt. If you have to jump through hoops to cover up something, then you shouldn't be doing it!
Jon Oliver makes 8 million a year talking about problems nobody is doing anything about. God knows how much he has accumulated over the years. I wonder if the guy making over twenty thousand dollars a day could do something.
