Lesson: New jeep has drive train problem, can't get parts and leaves you stranded. Old jeep has drive train problem, it gets you home and is fixed in no time. Thanks for the video! I love your content.

      @backwoodstherapy Před rokem +3

Being "new" is only part of the problem. It's a 392. It has a transfer case that is specific to that model. Only like 6400 were produced in 2021, and about the same for 2022. So less than 15k over two years compared to nearly 400k wranglers sold for the US in those same two model years. A Sport or even a regular Rubicon wouldn't have this issue just because of the plethora of models made and the parts to support it. It's the pitfall of buying a limited edition model.

I love my 2014JKU, I still feel it’s one of the best combos of functionality and practicality for off-roading, daily driving and adventuring. I’m all for technology improving things but when it starts to get in the way of reliability, it needs to be addressed and re-invented. Great vid Brad, hope they get that 392 back to you pronto!

Great video Brad . If you read page 14 in your owner’s manual. 4WD Auto is recommended for hard surfaces like normal city and highway driving . This is perfect for slippery surfaces like snow and rain . Once you go off-road, you need to be in 4WD hi or low , otherwise you’ll burn the clutch.

  • @Rob-if9ed
    @Rob-if9ed Před rokem

Hey there…. Thank you, for the very interesting vid. I enjoy all of them!
I’m a past owner of a ‘78 Wagoneer. I acquired it used in about ‘84 and it was bone stock EXCEPT for a modified 360 V8 that had been balenced & blueprinted a a huge 4-barrel Carter carb slapped on it. Command Trac 4wd and a deleted air-pump. Creatively, the original owner in TX had put a OEM sticker on the air box that said something like California emissions compliant. Since the TX yearly inspection at the time was visual only, I could point out to the TX inspector that this was a CA vehicle with weird stuff and no problem! Enough of all that.
The weak point of that platform is that lousy Chrysler transmission. My usage was as a tow pig and ramp launcher for a full keel sailboat that was about 5000lb on the trailer. It took LOTs of oomph and traction on the ramp. The truck excelled.
The torqueflite transmission sucked. When the transmission showed signs of going out for the third time, I called it quits and sold the truck. Switched to a 78 F-150 with a 460 V8. Pure joy.

Everyone has already said it, but I actually have an Atlas in my factory 392. It had a couple things we had to figure out (since I was the first to actually install one), but not as hard as it was to get into the ecodiesel. Love it, have over 1000 miles on it so far.
Other option is a hybrid of taking your 392 case and mating it with a Sport transfer case to keep things more factory. Bryce with Dixie 4x4 was the first one I know of doing that.

As much as I love the 392 ... I opted to LS swap my JK instead. It was less money to just build mine up (one ton axles, forties, V8) than to buy the 392 (which I would have had to modify on top of the purchase price). No, my build is not perfect. It loves gas stations. But it makes me smile, and I'll enjoy it for as long as I can. Hopefully one day I'll manage to be at an event or expo and run into you guys. Totally understand about the 392. However, IMHO, since you are Extreme x3 (at a minimum) on that vehicle, my recommendation would be to change the transfer case fluid every 15k or 20k miles. Try that...and see if the reliability goes up. Good luck...and enjoy the content/channel.

This is what I was going to comment. It’s dumb the Jeep / Ram engineers always think people need AWD with more power. I remember when we got the 5.2L / 5.9L Grand Cherokee (ZJ) and the transfer case was AWD. I swapped that garbage out for an NP231 right away 😂. Now the TRX and wrangler 392 get AWD transfer case. Meanwhile the raptor is doing just fine with 2WD / 4 auto / 4 hi / 4 lo. Hmmm.

JKs and JKUs are criminally underrated. Brad, this is Matthew and Daniela(IG In The Jeep On The Road). We ran into you while traveling in our White JKU in MOAB (EJS) I think in 2020 while we were hanging out with Ali and Kate the Jeep. We did some off roading with you, OvrlandX, KC Hilights crew, and the Patagonia crew. Such a blast. Anyways, just wanted to stop by and thank you for all the work you put into your channel! It's had a positive impact on mine and my wife's life as you inspired us to do a lot of the incredible travels we've done.

I really appreciate your fair and transparent discussions about these rigs. I believe the ‘21+ gladiators actually have this clutched transfer case as an option as well (auto 4wd).
I have a 1st tacoma that has been great for years but I recently moved to Utah and I think I will make the jump to Jeep. People like you and Dan Grec have shown Jeeps can work well for decades and thousands of miles. It’s helpful to know about things like this though! I sincerely hope you can get this issue resolved and reliably keep wheeling your favorite rig. However for those of us looking right now, it’s really helpful to hear an honest evaluation of some of these pieces of optional (at least for the gladiator and standard wrangler) pieces of equipment.

Hope you find a good solution for that rig, it's soo cool with Jeep V8's...I love your "silent movies", they contribute to the atmosphere I seek on my own trips. Dana 300 twin stick and a reduction gear. Front wheel digs, pulling the trailer off road with the reduction gear will improve control and lessen the stress on the drive train and suspension 👍 😀.

Nice t-shirt, Brad! Your 392's transfer box (or more appropriately center differential) would probably hold up a great deal longer if you ran a stock tire size. Back when I lived in San Diego and operated my own Land Rover parts business, I burned through rear axle shafts all-too frequently running 9.00 x 16 Michelin XS "Sahara" tires. They had a 37-inch diameter. They weighed quite a bit, too. While the flotation was superb, those tires were extremely rough on the standard rear half shafts. God only knows how many axle shafts, all rear shafts, I broke in my own rigs over the years, but the number was closer to a dozen than a half dozen. (When one shaft broke, I'd replace both sides. Never broke a front half shaft.) Those really large tires were also hell on the ten-inch drum brakes on my short wheelbase, 88", Land Rover. Great video with your always great advice. Sorry to hear about problems with your 392. Semper Fidelis to your corpsman son and to your entire family. Go Navy! Andy McKane

Regarding the 392, stock is great while under warranty, however, once you are out of warranty it may be beneficial to look into an atlas.

Please don't apologize for poor quality parts. Jeep for the price of that vehicle should be bullet proof.

Power Wagon does everything great. Bet you miss that one the most. And I liked your silent video. It was like being there. It was calming. And Regina rules. Great cook and wants to do more Badge trails? Plus you raised two great kids. Great family unit. Nice to see. Let Jeep put that new transfer case back in. It will be all new again. Just change your driveline fluids with Red line, Amsoil or Lucas products. Dont get rid of the 392. What else in its class would you replace it with?

I’m not trying to promote my channel, However I’m so proud of my Rubicon trip video I just made last week in this style. I really think you would enjoy it Brad.

  • @rubiconadventurewithscotty3258

The Transfer Case may have been a manufacturing failure. I just stumbled on several posts in The 392Forum where owners are posting that they found low oil fill levels in Transfer Case/F+R Diffs FROM THE FACTORY. One T-Case with under 3000 miles has been destroyed and being replaced by OEM.
I'm now checking/changing fluids in both Diffs and the T-Case - sorry you're the poster child for this

I can completely relate to your son and the modification vs practicality of a daily driver consideration. I have a JKUR that I would love to build out but I had to balance the daily driver aspect. I settled on a 1.5" lift with 34's, with a bumper and winch combo. I haven't found too many placed my friends on 37's can go that I cannot, so I am very happy. I'd love a low profile snorkel though :)

Instead of cable for Cherokee look into installing a sifter that replaced the cable control. Also to help transmission install a shift kit the original is weak. Gayne

Not good news to hear about the transfer case on the 392...
Sounds like the clutch packs are not up to scratch behind the V8 power. Still to be stranded out in a area without 4wd is not good.😮 Give me an honest XJ/TJ/JK any day😊. I'm thinking the 392 may not grace your garage for to long ???????
Looking forward to hearing about your vehicles past vehicles, like the XJ. Great Coffee take one Brad.
    🇦🇺🚙👍

  • @sandralutz-rodriguez2864

you have quite the fleet Brad! Anything can go wrong with any rig I suppose. Look at Marco losing his clutch a few years ago. Any time there is a new engine/ transmission and parts it usually takes a few years to iron some week points or bugs out. Like you said you push your rigs really hard. Stoked to follow along and see your next adventures.

  • @invictuscenturion8468

I know you loved your gladiator. How about replacing the 392 JL with a new Gladiator, running a go fast camper top or a RLD stainless steel top. Maybe Decked box. I know you want to.

  • @markw365

Go to a part time transfer case like on the Rubicon. Get rid of that clutch that failed, you probably never drive full time on the street anyway. The part time cases like the 231, or the 241OR are stupid reliable. Sounds like you found the weak link in the 392. Address that and enjoy the jeep.

San Diego to Moab is about 800 mi each way. We did it in one day once. We’ve broken it up into two days since.
Getting there from SC in two days will be a challenge.

You were lucky to get the one t-case. Since I’ve been back at a Mopar dealer it’s really been a challenge getting some stuff. Engines and driveline especially.
Our dealer owner built a 392 before Mopar did it, he upgraded the 241R with a 8spd.
