On July 24, 2023, police responded to a complaint in Wausau, WI regarding a 25-year-old man from Texas who was causing disturbances in the area. Upon arrival, the man couldn't be found. An hour later, a stolen vehicle was reported. The witness described seeing a man matching the Texas man's description walking through the parking lot and seeing his truck being driven. Initially thought to be a joke, it quickly became apparent that it was a serious matter. The suspect, who was on probation, was later located via his ankle monitor. As for the stolen truck, it seemed to have undergone extensive alterations.

My neighbor left the key to his brand new Mustang under the carpet. It was only 3 weeks old, and the insurance refused to pay. They told them that they would charge them with insurance fraud if they insisted. The kid was in college, and someone knew where he kept the keys. There weren't any other thefts in our area. It is a safe, expensive area, so the insurance concluded that it was an inside job.

In my experience, when these people are confronted about it after an incident like this, they get very upset and say things like "IVE NEVER NEEDED TO LOCK MY DOOR OR CAR BEFORE!"

I see those comments a lot "Great now the car is wrecked" Okay but I promise as a cop I'm more concerned getting the guy comitting an active felony crime, tweaking on meth, and putting people's lives in danger than your stolen vehicle. That's what insurance is for. That's what removeable keys and door locks are for. I always tell people "We're gonna look for your stolen vehicle, if we find it and it runs, it's possible it may get damaged, because we will chase it, so hopefully you have insurance" I also state that obviously we hope we get it back undamaged but it's already stolen.. If he never got it back he'd still have to make an insurance claim. The situation doesn't worsen by his truck getting totalled in a pursuit, it just doesn't, unfortunately, get any better either.
This is one of those guys that will never accept accountability for anything he’s ever done. Nothing is ever his fault.
I advocate for seriously soundproof backseats where they can blast 'Baby Shark' for the one being transported the whole ride.

That is why my fob (older vehicle key) is on a carabiner! It goes on my body along with my pew pew, first thing in the morning. I’ve got kill switches on both vehicles, you never know. Taught our daughters to do the same, husband hasn’t quite caught on after 27+ years so he’s on his own! 😂😂
So many people do it. A vast majority of stolen cars are vehicles are either left running or unlocked with the key in them.
