    • @REVOLUTIONS51
      @REVOLUTIONS51 Před 8 měsíci +51

      Yeah, the only real benefit of more heat pipe is better coverage of the CPU. The CPU IHS integrated heath spreader, countrary to what the name suggests, really isn't that good at spreading heat. Thus on modern cou with "wider" arrange of ccd / chiplets or just bigger monolithic cpu will greatly benefit for more heath pipe simply because a 4 hp like this old noctua will not have even coverage of the chiplets/ccd /monolithic element, and more heath pipe cooler will have great coverage of heat pipe directly over the heat producing components. But even 1 heatpipe would be enough to carry the heat from a cou if you'd have a way to transfer it from the cou to the pipe, as a good quality heat pipe has an equivalent thermal conductivity in excess of 100x that of copper and 200x that of aluminium...

    Really shows that airflow should be the number one priority when it comes to cooling. Just swapping my case allowing me to put 3 extra fan (and get rid of all the dust built up) dropped my temp by 10°C. I went from a toasty 103°C VRAM (3090 reference) to a warm 90°C. Still not comfrotable with those temps though, can't wait to go full custom watercooling to fill that EVO XL

    • @josephoberlander
      @josephoberlander Před 3 měsíci

      Correct. Put a 60W incandescent bulb in a sealed metal box with no airflow and try not to singe your fingers an hour later. There are many ways to get rid of the heat coming off of the heat sink. But even the smallest 1 inch fan in a laptop is orders of magnitude better than nothing. If it's done correctly, you can get by with almost no fans.
      Also, pro tip from an old system builder:
      Those fan grills on the rear of cases are required by the government as a safety feature. Take a Dremel to a new case and cut it out. Put in one of those round wire fan guards instead. This will lower noise significantly as well as improve airflow as the fan isn't crammed against the screen, increasing wear and back-pressure.

      @@josephoberlander no worry, it is watercooled now and everything never go above 70°C (vram included). I'm not putting a dremel anywhere near a case this expensive anyway, I rather put some spacer between the fans and the frame/rads

    • @josephoberlander
      @josephoberlander Před 3 měsíci

      @@guillaumejoop6437 That doesn't really help with the poor design, IME. What should be there is a nice open circle and you then put in a finger guard/grille with the fan. But you know how manufacturers are litigation-adverse. So they just stamp tiny holes in the metal as if that's really an "opening". Often, with a bare case, it takes a few minutes at most to cut out a nearly circular hole out of the grid. Then a little sanding and it looks like it was built that way. Easy 20-30% better airflow. As a benefit, your fan noise will drop by 30%, typically, as a lot of it comes from back-pressure and the fan struggling.
      Note that all fan ratings are based on it hanging suspended in open air, so anything you do to impede it greatly shortens its life, adds noise, and lowers efficiency.

      Everything is "just using physics;" Physics, being the study of matter, energy, and whatnot, encompasses everything. The science around thermo-fluid dynamics, specifically relating to finned surfaces/heat sinks can definitely be categorised as a marvel of engineering and technology, although the understanding has been pretty advanced for quite some time so I can somewhat see the point you're trying to make. The design is inherently a balancing act between surface area and flow rate, and because of standardised fans & mountings there's not much scope for advancement in heat sink efficiency. The main benefits will come from improving overall flow rate, which is why a fan upgrade will usually provide better returns than a heat sink upgrade.

    I'm still using my old cooler from well over a decade ago. Noctua was really fast sending the new mounting kit as well and I have no reason to ever use any other coolers than those from Noctua. It was not cheapest, but it was among the best and over the years I have even saved money by using the same heatsink over and over again.

    Even if your proof of purchase has gone missing, the parts are easily and cheaply available. I ended up going that route, since I also needed parts ASAP and didn't want to wait on support.
    I've got a NH-U9B SE2 that started it's service life on an LGA775 Core 2 Quad system sitting on top of my 5800X3D right now! Yeah it cost more up front, but it's still going and even has AM5/LGA1700 support, where a LGA115x cooler I bought from another brand is a fancy paperweight now and I had to replace it with an entirely new cooler when I upgraded that system. And when that system comes due for an upgrade, that newer non-Noctua will probably become a paperweight too, while the U9B will probably still be goin' strong.

    Noctua is the absolute GOAT my MOBO didn’t support the additional cables they sent me for “smart-silent fans” (it’s dead silent without them anyway) and I contacted customer support and someone kept up rapport with me until I ran through every option and eventually got it working by removing their smart cables. They even sent me a bonus owl sticker and my cooler came with every type of additional mounting accessory you would need. Best purchase I’ve ever made for my PC I can’t vouch enough. I love you noctua

    I recently donated an ultra budget build to a family in need consisting of a dirt cheap OEM Core i3 10100 and a 20 year old Thermalright XP-90 (circa 2004) I found in storage that I adapted to fit with old water block mounting hardware. The CPU maxed out at a very quiet 55C, and they are very happy with how fast their "new" computer is. Love knowing that a heatsink I bought 20 years ago is now responsible for introducing a new generation of kids to computers.
    Never throw old heatsinks away! Adapting them is easy with a little ingenuity, and if they dissipated 100W in 2004, they can dissipate 100W in 2024 too.

    I had every intention of reusing my old Noctua cooler from my i7-950 on my new i5-13600K but the brackets didn't match and I didn't know you could get replacement modern brackets. I was also very impatient about completing my new build, as I also reused my GPU, PSU, DVD, and SSD. All those components much newer than the MoBo. Ended up with an absolutely gorgeous NH-D15S Chromax Black, and spending way more than I needed to. I don't care, I love it.

    This may seem silly, but to people out there (like myself) buying and retrofitting older Office OptiPlexes and other OEMs, saving $10 here, $20 there, another $15 enables us to keep our prices low enough to where its worth it to buy a prebuilt from someone like me.

  • @martin_soerensen

    Same reason I am using the NH-D15S, now on its third system (AM5). I did need new mounting brackets and while I had the receipt, it would be shipped from a different EU country and it would take about a week.
    So since I needed some new thermal paste and some other stuff as well, I just went and bought the kit anyway. It's not that expensive, but I very much appreciate the fact that they stand by their products so long and actually make new mounting hardware which supports the old products.
    If they were like most other companies, new coolers would use slightly different mounting brackets so they could force people to buy new coolers.

    I have a dual radiator noctua, with the 2 fans and 1 exhaust on the back, seems overkill but my room in the summer gets waaaay to hot. Only running a Asus 1060 6gig for graphics, aside from the Graphics card which honestly holds like a champ (love those old turbo designs) The radiator with just air cooling which is basically just swapping hot air for hot air in the summer i barely see a difference, they work SO WELL. Love Noctua and proudly slapped the sticker emblem on my PC.

    Those few degrees can mean alot when you are computing like a professional or even gaming like a person does nowadays you have those either 3 or 8 degrees mean alot plus that company is what you call a good company if they are sending out a piece of their new equipment for absolutely nothing if you show a receipt from when you first got a new fan from them and I can guarantee that most of the computer master race builds a new computer or just does it anyway most people will have those receipts just like I always keep stuff like that because you never know when they might come in handy and just look at that they are doing something that someone like Amazon would not do that for their customers. I actually am very impressed with the company and customer service. So notua keep up your amazing work and hopefully showing this on ltt they get loads of sales and new customers and maybe you might get some kind of new offer for absolutely nothing. Love the video's LTT been watching for probably 10 years now and will keep watching but it is when you see new shorts at 11 am in the morning I am then hooked until 3 in the morning and then thinking about whether or not I should go to work that day and just keep watching until I get a amount of videos of what I have missed over the last 6 months and then find out I haven't even seen 3% of the video's I am actually missing most the time. Linus please slow down on the new content so I can catch up with you and that is not including the live chat that go on for absolute hours and I am trying to cram in all this stuff but can't and I have had to much coffee I need to go to bed lol

    Not too surprised about the fan difference tbh. A heatsink is basically just a bunch of metal fins, and the principle for that design has been known for a very long time. Conversely, motor technology has improved a ton in the last 20 years, as has manufacturing for things like fan blades

    reason why the new cooler preformed 3C better than the original one is due to the copper heat pipes layout the new ones spread the heat more over the aluminum fins. the old one send it all in 1 area. which is the main diffrence

    I have re-used my original Scythe Ninja for several builds. It was designed to passively cool up to a 95W CPU and is laughably overkill for modern CPUs. A new fan and it works great. The extremely wide fin spacing makes it very quiet and allows you to use the rear fan to pull air through if it's within an inch two.
