      Glad you enjoyed it. Pure coincidence with the cat lighting.

    Hi Phil, even though the weather was dull, it was still a nice relaxing vlog to watch. Boots enjoys your music,and always sits up and watches when your music comes on at the end, and likes to watch Bushka and Midge!

    Thanks for another relaxing video Phil. Even though the day was drab, it was still a lovely cruise; lower contrast, soft tones, and more subtle colours. Easy on the eyes. Love the cats eyes lights...and your music.

      Thank you. It's not so peaceful in the summer but there are many isolated spots to moor up on.

      Thank you. I don't know what plans they have for the lock house? It's been empty for years.

    I think it might be right around Bushka's and Midge's birthdays-- if so, Happy Birthday to them both!

      You're right. I don't know exactly when they were born but it was around the beginning of April I think? They are eleven years old now!

    i wonder if you remember the elderly lady who used to live in the cottage at Bourton Lock. She kept a very tidy garden in the opposite side of the lock, mostly given over to soft fruits. I have long ago forgotten her name, but she lived there for many years, seeming to get along quite well with no mains electricity, running water or road access. She kept a small boat above the lock for running down to Banbury. She could sometimes be quite fierce, coming out of her house to complain to any boater who was making too much noise with their engine while passing through the lock. After her death I believe the house was taken over by a voluntary group of boaters who wanted to protect it from vandalism, but I don´t think their efforts were successful. It certainly doesn´t look like the pretty place it used to be. Thank you, as always, for sharing this excellent video.

      I didn't know her but I did know of her. Can't remember her name now? I don't know what the plans are for that house, nothing much seems to be happening there?

      It was Maureen and there’s an information panel in the garden. Although it was officially called Wardle Lock, to many boaters it was referred to as "Maureen's lock". I believe her family sold her to another boating family when she was young. She ended her years in a nursing home.

      @NarrowboatJourneys  Před 4 měsíci

      Thanks so much. There are many mosses and liverworts growing around locks. Oxfordshire is not very good for ferns for some reason but you do see them on occasion.

    • @NarrowboatJourneys
      @NarrowboatJourneys  Před 4 měsíci

      Thank you. Adding music all depends on how good or interesting the original sound is, and if there is a big enough gap between commentaries.

      @NarrowboatJourneys ... I find the cruising stretches with music really add to your videos. Even if you have a stretch that's not too exciting, I find it becomes exciting in conjunction with your music. This synthesis sets a very peaceful mood that takes me out of my living room and puts me into the canal world for a precious minute or so. Then the mood is set, we are with you on your boat, and you can continue with your narration. Except then we are right on the boat with you. 🙂
      That's how I feel anyway... lol

    I guess if you have short legs hopping across to open the other side of the gate, there would be a big chance of getting wet. Since the distance is quite a jump.

    You certainly have to be very sure footed jumping from one open lockgate to the other lockgate without an involuntary dip, I can see why David Johns sold the boat and went back to bricks and mortar getting older is something you have to think about .🧐

    Relaxing , but UK weather omg , cold damp and dirty brown water , friend has a 50ft barge , so cold in winter he moves out until spring but this year 2024 is so cold and wet he is still in his flat and almost May ? Looks like summer is in ruins already ..

    Do the kayakers have to pay any licensing fees or do they just get free run of the place?

    • @NarrowboatJourneys
      @NarrowboatJourneys  Před 4 měsíci

      They are supposed to have a licence. I expect the club members do have one but most of the general public probably don't. These things are rarely checked.

    Hey Phil, just curious why some locks have double gates at one end and a single gate at the other. Looks like these had two at the bottom and one at the top, maybe that has something to do with it... 🤷‍♂ Thanks.

    • @NarrowboatJourneys
      @NarrowboatJourneys  Před 25 dny +1

      Top gates are smaller than bottom gates so are not so heavy and just one can be used. The bottom gates being bigger are usually paired. South of Banbury bottom gates are single. I think this was to save money.

    • @NarrowboatJourneys

      @@NarrowboatJourneys Oh, right, I see. I just thought that maybe you had one for poodling about and one strictly for shopping because of the large container on the back of the right one. Phil, I'm in the process of buying my first boat, and I'll need a bike myself. Have you had many issues with theft? It's a concern of mine. Thanks, mate. 🙏

    • @NarrowboatJourneys
      @NarrowboatJourneys  Před 2 měsíci +1

      I've been ok but bikes do get stolen. Always lock them up. A mountain bike with puncture proof tyres is best. You'll want some tread on the tyres but not the really knobbly ones.

    • @comfywomfy
      @comfywomfy Před 2 měsíci

      @@NarrowboatJourneys That's good to know that you haven't been robbed. I have an old motorbike bike chain that I think will do. And yes, I think you are right regarding a mountain bike. 👍 I do have a little Brompton, but I don't think it will fare too well on the muddy towpaths. It would fit in the boat nicely; however, I'm likely to go arse over tit on it.
      Thanks, brother. Stay safe 🙏
