It isn’t just bc of BTS or KPop or Hallyu that will see the demise of toxic masculinity. Police brutality, sexual assault, domestic abuse, violent crimes, you name a societal ill, there’s a link to toxic masculinity. I know there are men themselves who feel ostracized and trapped in the west’s narrow view of masculinity. It needs to end. It will end.

You don't know anything about the real life relationships of celebrity kpop stars, or any other race, celebrity or not. You don't know anything about how lucky women in the west are. Actually they're so lucky that, a large noisy minority of them are ungrateful af that they call being a gentlemen and showing respect for women a form of toxic masculity. Smh people. Smh.

Also let's not act as if this industry is not toxic and don't demand: plastic surgery to the face for v rounded shape, to the eyes (alot more facial surgery) weird diets, food deprivaiton...

@@salsaecebolinha5281 well that's what korean believe, shouldn't be served as a good example that we non-korean not to take the positive side of kpop.
& looking back at the age demographic in various music charts & sns, not really a majority at all for ur statement about them considering anyone over 20 to be uncool to like kpop.
Even now, there are A LOT of koreans over 30 that like kpop bcus there are also kpop idols who are already around that age/serving contents that adults actually like. Idk where u got that already false info from lol.
& again, another wrong infos. They didn't always do major plastic surgery. In many cases it's minor & most of the time it's not for facial frame either, it's only for a few facial features. U do realize that plenty of idols have sharp & slim facial shape right? Not rounded.
& korean men comes in many different shape?? Which include skinny & having soft features?? Idk what u're trying to say here.
No one said that male idols represent the majority of how korean men looks like just like how hollywood actors don't represent how american men look like too lol.
As for makeup, it's for their job. It's normal. They don't really wear makeup either off camera/in everyday's life. Not sure with what u meant by "weird diet" tho but yeah, some of them did starve a lot to make themselves skinny.

I cannot believe how differently Koreans are viewed by Americans than they were when I lived there as a foreign student from 1989 to 1996. Americans were only interested in Japan and barely knew about Korea. My art teacher praised how Japanese ceramics is the best in the world, and she would refuse to believe Korean ceramicists were abducted and forcefully taken to Japan so they could teach the Japanese potters their advanced techniques. Another teacher of mine who was in his 50’s showed slides he took in Seoul while he was stationed there in the 1960’s. The photos were showing poverty-stricken Korea and my classmates would assume Korea was still like that in the 1990’s. There was no use trying to explain how Korea had changed. Now I understand ltheir response because they didn’t know any country would grow so rich so in such a short time. I could never cook Korean food or open a Kimchi bottle when I lived with my American roommate because she openly showed how disgusted she was by the “stench.” I was almost ashamed of Korean food as well as of our culture as a whole.
You would never know how I feel now watching videos like this and reading foreign news about Korea being so powerful and envied.
I wish I had been born 20 years after my birth year. My everyday life in the States and how I perceived myself would have been different. I’m still glad Korea is now getting its recognition it deserves.

I even started noticing that the fashion trends appeared in Korea 2-3 years ahead of America. Now they’re starting to dominate the film and music industry. Kpop is more then kpop. I know BTS is a kpop band, but most don't call them this anymore because they doing different genres, and are original in doing there own style. The BTS - genre. And BTS supposed to be a hiphop group, with 2 underground rappers and a streetdancer that learned rap when he joined in. But the CEO decided to make it a Kpop group when other 4 vocolist joined in and not all of them could sing, each of them learned to sing/rap and dancing. Its a lot work and time.
They composing, producing there own songs, writing there own lyrics. Meaning full lyrics, the lyrics are so deep you need a explanation. With grazy wordplays. Bts is more then some westerns thinking. You have to came out the western bubble and being openminded. You have different groups in Kpop. But BTS is another level. They are the biggest, but keeping themselfs humble, they are social an funny. There personality is goofienes, jokes, and living there lives, care about people and they living togheter. They are real brothers that care about there fans and everyone.

korean culture survived depite the cultural destruction efforts under emperial japan...
thus, it is interesting(& somewhat condescending of him) to see that a western professor believing the korean government DECIDED to push cultural thing AFTER deliberating that the electronics, cars, clothing etc industries are already taken over by the america, europe, japan etc...

Well, the South Korean gov. did actually allocate a significant amount of their budget toward Halyu. K-Dramas, K-Pop, etc. were actually funded by the gov. in the beginning (only after Seo Taji & Boys proved it would work, however. Before them, it was solo artists that were churned out by the industry). Why do you think SM, JYPE, and YG were/are so powerful? They were originally funded by the SK gov. BTS is really interesting, however, since they didn’t have access to those resources, yet still prevailed.

The teacher in his 50s trying to talk with "yo man" like he's a teenage crackhead? Apologizing to students for showing them numbers? These are people graduating business schools and they don't like numbers? Maybe that's why Korea is beating them... Better education, more discipline, people willing to work hard. I do think it’s important to distinguish that the makeup is not an every day look, mostly for stages and concerts. It is very attractive but not the norm outside of performance life. That being said, of course as we move forward and conventional stereotypes for men and women are diminished, it may in fact become more normal and acceptable to wear outside of a stage. It would be really cool to see men not afraid to experiment if they want to without the fear of being judged.

Years later it seems like K-Pop has ended up leapfrogging them by a huge margin in that regard.

Through their clothes, makeup, hair, and actions. Instead of suppressing themselves. I truly am. I admire idols for breaking these western stereotypes bc they know their exterior does not determine if they are a man. They are secure in their masculinity and are human. They cry, share their thoughts, are caring for other MEN and women. And I honestly think this is how it should be.
For example, look at Jimin from BTS. He is emotionally intelligent, and has very androgynous features. He wears clothes designed for women and for men. He used to worry about being muscular and manly. But now he realizes he can be himself and that is enough.
