Mjölnir (Old Norse: Mjǫllnir) is the hammer of the thunder god Thor in Norse mythology, used both as a devastating weapon and as a divine instrument to provide blessings. The hammer is attested in numerous sources, including 11th century runic Kvinneby amulet, and the Poetic Edda, a collection of eddic poetry compiled in the 13th century, and the Prose Edda, a collection of prose and poetry compiled in the 13th century. The hammer was commonly worn as a pendant during the Viking Age in the Scandinavian cultural sphere, and Thor and his hammer occur depicted on a variety of objects from the archaeological record. Today the symbol appears in a wide variety of media and is again worn as a pendant by various groups, including adherents of modern Heathenry.

From personal experience, I feel as if I have more strength, stamina, and willpower when I'm wearing it. Placebo? Possibly, but wearing it makes me feel good, and honestly I think that’s all that matters.

Placebo affect is exactly that. I wear my father's wedding ring and rub it when frightened, it calms me somehow makes me feel he's by my side saying everything is ok. If something brings you strength and/or peace then do what works for you

@@britvic4334 I agree, somewhat. But to imply something is placebo is also to imply that the “boon” it gives us, so to speak, is only real in imagination. Which I like to think that certain spiritual jewelry, like Mjolnir, help us connect to the energies and spirits of the universe that’re all around us, and that wearing them is not purely some trick of the mind. I don’t what your thoughts about that are. Curious to know other people’s perspectives.

    • @britvic4334

@OdinsOutlaw for me placebo can mean it's all in your head, you're giving it the power to support you if that makes sense? Sorry it probably doesn't and I wasn't being belittling saying it's a placebo at all. I believe objects even scents can bring on so much strength and emotions it's actually fascinating what they can do for each individual. If someone is intent on it being BS then they will completely close off to it no matter what but when we're open minded and have an interest/passion for something like this it has deeper meaning. Like my father's ring, it's safety &love when I need it. I feel he's holding my hand through life, that's drives me on in a more positive way. Plus it makes me smile. ☺️

@@britvic4334 I don't feel belittled at all, don't worry, was just curious on your opinion, and felt the need to explain mine :p And yes that makes a lot of sense, though I do disagree and that is okay. I think the human mind certainly has amazing capabilities, and we can do things with our minds that most people probably wouldn't be able to believe. However at the same time, I do believe the human mind can't do everything and that some of these magical/spiritual jewelries, whether it be a Mjolnir, or a Crucifix, help us tap into forces and energies outside ourselves in order to invoke certain spiritual boons upon ourselves.

    Good morning from Texas, USA
First let me say I love your channel.
After my husband past, I was in a rather fragile state emotionally. I had an experience where I believe I crossed over and visited with my husband, I was told it was a heart attack. My daughter knowing how much I love the beliefs of the Scandinavian people of old, gave me a Freya statue and Thor hammer necklace.
Once I put that on things began to change dramatically for the better.
My zest for life grew, boldness insued, I learned to ride a harley, met some great friends. Now I travel the states riding a motorcycle enjoying life and friends. Given my age some might call it crazy, I call it a second life.
    Thanks for sharing your story.

When I Was a young Man in my 20s,the only place to get a Thor's Hammer pendant was at a local tobacco shop. Cast pewter. I wore it for over 14 years. Finally I got a more authentic silver one at a Ren Faire. Have had and lost many over the years. Gave my 2 nephews one each at coming of age. I make them know. All out of iron. My faith has taken me to my craft. Blessed by the Gods with a great life.

My father in law, and chieftain gifted my mjolnir when he determined that I deserved it. And I haven't taken it off in about 6 years, except to change the leather/chain. When I put it around my neck, it felt both physically and emotionally heavy. Your story is very inspiring, I'm so glad the gods guided you through that tough time. Hail to you man. I notice that when I'm not wear my mjonir that my energy is low and things in my life begin to spiral out of control. I've had many low points where I thought of dying. I feel my spiritual belief is what keeps me going. I always find a way to overcome any obstacles that life has thrown at me. I bury emotion and push forward. @MrEnaric Před 2 lety +10

In almost all (pre/proto-) historic cultures amulets were worn to protect throat and chest for the obvious reason: it's our most vulnerable and vital zone together with our head. That's why Roman coins were used as pendants in the late Germanic Iron Age: they had the face of a 'god' (Caesar) on it after all and were round like later early medieval roundshields. That's probably why early coins and coin pendants (bracteates) were known as 'skildlings' by the West Germanic tribes (literally 'little shields', hence the names 'Schilling' for pennies in Germany, shilling in Britain and schelling coins in the Netherlands). Amulets protect and increase your strength. I carved my Mjölnir pendant from a piece of (old) spermwhale tooth about ten years ago for those reasons. Like Þór, I am a Guardian, a father and a keeper of peace with responsibility for my family. I dedicated my pendant with the proper gáldrs to him and the lives I want to protect. The runes are cognate with the formula I used. My Mjölnir reminds me every day who I am, where I come from and what my duties are. I asked Þór's blessing and aid for this task. The pendant is also a witness to this bond. That's why it never comes off. It's part of me now and shows who I am. That said: glad you came out of Covid man, people still underestimate this disease.

I absolutely LOATHE 99.999% of what passes for "Viking" jewelry online. They put " Ægishjálmur" and "Vegvisir" of everything. They put Odin's Ravens on Thor's hammer. They pick random Runes and just slap them on something and call it "Viking". I could go on, but you know what I am saying. A long time ago I started seeking out real craftsmen for my jewelry. For instance, my hammer is a reproduction of a find from Denmark by an amazing craftsman in England who does it with the Lost Wax method like in the old times. I also have other stuff from him. My "weapons" I got the same way. I have 2 amazing Axes from Ukraine, a Seax from the Czech Republic and my Sword is from Sweden. ALL hand made by people who are either Pagan themselves or are students of history. I am not laying this all out to say "hey, look at me. I got all this stuff". I am saying it because i feel we must start promoting honest craftsmen who's heart are in the work. Most of that stuff to be found online sends out the wrong message. It's pathetic and it waters down the seriousness of the public face of our belief structure. I really can't wait for the Viking craze to blow over and the rest of us can get back to being actual Pagans and living life as it makes sense to us under they eyes of the Gods and our ancestors, without all the woke crap and corporate exploitation.

My grandfather came from Norway to Australia as a young lad with his family and had been raised in the old Norse ways. I was fortunate to have his guidance as a child. My father gave me a Mjolner when I was married and I still wear it all the time. My Pop told me that thunder was Thor banging his hammer on a great rock up in the heavens. I totally believed it as a child, but was distracted away from my ancestor's beliefs during a Christian upbringing by my parents, who thought the old ways were 'evil' and 'ignorant'. When I do wear my Mjolner to gym, or into any of life's 'battles', I believe it makes me stronger, more focused and more likely to succeed. I had no idea about the connection between the Mjolner and the heart rhythms, but it certainly makes perfect sense. I am a naturally spiritual and magical person and I was drawn to these beliefs very early on in life. I always feel stronger and more authentic when I wear my Mjolner.

He was involved in some of the exploration ships back in the 1800s including the Gjoa. Interesting stuff there. Eventually they got tired of Norway, they were living up Tromso, arctic circle. But I also stopped wearing for a while to, and that was a shitty time. What was affected the most was my mental health, in the year and a half that I had stopped wearing it, I had been admitted in the mental hospital, not once, but twice. When I got out the second time, I decided to pick up were I left off and start studying again, and also wearing mjolnir again. Ever since then, everything's changed, and gladly for the better. My mental and physical health are great now. Plus watching this video maded me love my pendant even more. Understanding the significance and meaning of it, I love that my mjolnir isn't a Chinese cringe one, or even a beautifully crafted silver or gold one. Mine was hand forged in iron from a blacksmith in Texas. And instead of getting a nice chain or a leather cord, I got a small piece of steel chain from home Depot. I figured the symbolism of an iron Thor's hammer on a steel chain would be... Empowering. I was right. I will never take this off again. Ever.

I even had it on my dog tags when I was in the service and none of my nco's or commanding officers had a problem with it. I still wear it to this day, it's a pewter one about 1/8"-1/4" thick and nearly the size of an amarican quarter with some Celtic knot work reverse casted into it. The general shape of an object awakens those ancient memories because of how imbedded its iconography is, as well as a conduit for those specific energies.

It comes down to the question of who you trust to give you the most genuine representation of the germanic belief system? An actual pagan who made the mjolnir at the time it was practiced or people in China who googled mjolnir and made a necklace based on their marvel search results?

Yes I have a Mjolnir i have not worn it for a very long time can't say if it helped with my health as I was fine all the years that I worn it, but now I have health problems maybe its time I put it back on. I have been thinking so much over the last few months to make a wooden one I know it might sound strange but when I make things put time and energy into them I feel they have something special about them.

    • @blakey9089

Considering most Pagans are very animistic. i believe it's very likely mjolnir and similar pendants may have begun as wood carved items and as time went and wealths, techniques and resources changed items were mostly golds, silvers, iron etc.
We can't really find many of these things since how well wood breaks down over time.
I believe when it comes to pendants based from animism, made by yourself or someone close is always best, next is the place he has linked us to where they are made from and by the people closer to our origins last option is always that cheap crazy ebay stuff he showed. Personally I'd never wear something for meaning if it's made in China.
Wooden jewellery is stunning, I made homemade wood finger rings with a drill as a lathe and a dremel to shape them. Simple yet it works.
      I hope your health improves.

This was my personal theory only, so far, about Mjolnir being a cognate of an old Croatian word for grinding. Northern Croatian dialect has it almost word for word, with identical meaning. Hence my idea of a possible explanation. Seeing you translate it in old norse having the same meaning is just amazing.
    Etymology in Croatian being
    Mljeti = To grind (Infinitive)
Mlinar - The person/thing that grinds (masculine)
Melnar - Same thing in Kajkavian dialect
We have much more in common historically than modern history would let Us assume. ;)

I wonder if the earlier tribes wore Meldunjaz pendants made of bone or antler, explaining the scarcity of surviving examples.

I got rid of all of my old purchased Mjolnir necklaces, or broke them down to use their parts for other things. Instead, I have a hand-made wooden Mjolnir made from a gorgeous looking blend of mahogany and pine on a leather cord. The one I always wear, however, is my Odin pendant. I used a large chain necklace my wife gave to me when we first met, a metal loop from a Mjolnir necklace she got me for my birthday, a connector from a spearhead necklace she got me for our anniversary, and finally a pendant depicting Odin riding Sleipnir while Huggin and Muninn fly overhead, that I picked up at a local renaissance fair. That one came to me in quite an interesting moment of inspiration and creativity as I had them all laying out in front of me, wondering what the Hel I was going to do with them because I dont tend to change up my jewelry very often, and generally wear the same one or two pieces constantly.

From what I have learned, the oldest Mjolnir (worn as a pendant/necklace) to date comes from Immenstedt in Germany dated 8th or 9th century. I'll copy/paste the portion of the article from Roter Geysir's archaeological site. Sven is a practicing Heathen from Germany who researches these things. If you have info on an earlier hammer, please share it. I'd love to learn more.
"Finally, there is another remarkable Thor’s hammer find from Dithmarschen on the German North Sea coast, which today is almost completely forgotten. During the excavation of the Immenstedt burial site in 1880, a bronze Thor’s hammer (Fig. 9) was found strung along a chain of coloured pearls. It was located in the neck area of a female inhumation grave in tumulus 14 P. The extremely fragile find was carefully excavated along with the surrounding soil, but unfortunately it largely disintegrated into dust because it was touched too early during the conservation process. The fact that this extraordinary find was recorded at all is a great stroke of luck, because the responsible excavation team headed by Johanna Mestorf did groundbreaking work for their time. Thus the original form and size of the Thors hammer was drawn in advance and even the coloured pearls were pulled back onto a string in the correct order. Mestorf herself has explicitly guaranteed the correctness of this work.26 Under the excavation conditions customary at that time, the Thor’s hammer of Immenstedt would otherwise certainly have been destroyed during the excavation process without any chance of being preserved for posterity. Thanks to the diligence of the excavators, however, it has been documented together with its context in a way that is still verifiable today.
And this context is quite astonishing, because the burial is dated to the 8th or early 9th century27 and shows without any doubt that the Thor’s hammer was worn around the neck as a pendant. Thus, the Thor’s hammer of Immenstedt is nothing less than the oldest evidence for these pendants worn as a necklace ever found. At the same time, it is also the oldest Thor’s hammer with the “classical” short handle, which is typical for Denmark and Sweden; only that this specimen from Northern Germany is several generations older than comparable pieces from the north. Furthermore, there is no evidence that the deceased could have emigrated from Scandinavia to Immenstedt. On the contrary: the south-north orientation of the burial (with the head in the south and the feet in the north) clearly points to the Old Saxons, for whom this burial practice is virtually a defining part of their identity. The Thor’s hammer of Immenstedt is thus undoubtedly one of the most important key finds for this early period even if there are no other comparable finds with a similar dating so far."

In Finland we have a thing called confirmation school (rippikoulu) where at age ~15 you go to summer camp to learn christian values and after that you get your first communion and your "permission to marry".
Commonly parents buy a little cross to carry on a necklace.
I asked my mother to buy me something else instead of a cross since our family have never been into christianity or going to church so she bought me a Thor's hammer.
It didn't mean much to me at the time but i've worn it ever since and the meaning has grown on me over the years and it have meaned different things at different times and it's always living, breathing and fluctuating similar to tattoos i have.
