I really can't lie Mat Pat really struck on the idea of Food Theory. This show is amazing!
Yeah, but aren’t all of his shows amazing lol
I was sceptical in the beginning but it became a great content.
I know right! I love it! Food is something everyone can relate to which makes it even better.
I agree the kind of content he does and kinda of puns he makes goes well with food
I genuinely did not expect this channel to succeed like this...
2:32 The recipe change when they started putting actual pumpkin in the latte is what killed the flavor to me. It used to be SO good and I didn't care it didn't have actual pumpkin because the latte is called "pumpkin SPICE", which has always been a spice mixture used for pumpkin pies since the 1890's. For over a hundred years prior to the latte it was understood as a spice that compliments pumpkin, not a spice that is made from pumpkin.
I didn’t know that…so that’s why it tasted so off and weird to the last time I tried it! It’s heavier and sweeter than I remembered, uck. I used to love pumpkin spice latte in my college years (that was over a decade ago), so I assumed that it was my taste buds that changed.
lol this is such a pet peeve of mine. I hate when people say stuff like "But there isn't any pumpkin even in there thing" and I'm just like "there shouldn't be....? its pumpkin spice, with which to spice pumpkin....?" I never got to try a PSL before they started adding actual pumpkin and I'm a little sad about that. I might try to do so at home....?
I hate this too, like it should be ovbvious to anyone who does a home cooking throughout the year. Pumpkin spice is what you use to flavor pumpkin with. Not the pumpkin itself. Why would a pumpkin latte be something people want? Idk. The spice on the other hand tastes great, especially in eggnog and other creamy drinks
I have pumpkin spice at home and put it into coffee and didn't notice any changes in taste. I am watching to see how they made it. The smell of pumpkin pie is supposed to be an aphrodisiac for men.
@@recoveringsoul755 I thought it was the smell of bacon.

For those who are wondering about the peppermint mocha, there is no season for it, it is year round. We keep the peppermint that is used for it year round for other drinks, the only thing we don’t have is the chocolate curls that goes on top of the whipped cream. So if the chocolate crumbles matter to you that much, then that is when you should be worried about it running out
As a Brit I've never understood the collective freakout about PSL. On the other hand, I'm now super curious about strawberry cream cake & "cheesy" drinks! #thanksMatPat
What does being a Brit have to do with it? Starbuckses are just as common here as they are in the States, and Pumpkin Spice dominates the autumnal menu here, too. Your ignorance of PSL has nothing to do with your national identity.
@@febotroilo7225 I'm aware it's on the seasonal menu but was referring to the popularity, not its availability.
@@febotroilo7225 it kinda does. The PSL may be a huge trend for you in the US, but it's just not as popular in other countries, especially countries who don't have autumn or Thankgiving-esque holidays to speak of. Here in the Philippines, PSL is never spoken of. The Philippines is a tropical country, and everyone's way too obsessed with 3-in-1 coffee, which is the immortal trend here. I literally never heard of the PSL until I saw this video. I asked my parents about it, and they've never heard of the PSL until I told them. That's how obscure PSL is here. Sometimes nationality *does* have an effect on our "ignorance". It's like how cheese is trending here. You might not understand the trend, but we do, and the products created by it are insanely good.
P.S. Yes, we do have Starbucks here, but it is expensive for us to afford to buy regularly. Besides, why buy an expensive cup of coffee when you can buy a coffee packet that gives you a similar experience for almost a hundredth of the price? Coffee packets are all the rage here, and everyone's shameless about it.
@@adlirez The same happens in the rest of America (the actual one). Since we're closer to the Equator we don't really care much for seasons, so in my case I had never heard about that beverage until now.

There was this one odor remover spray my mom would use back I'd say about....7 years ago, and that's what the house would smell like, it had a VERY distinct smell to it. She got it again for the first time in years. Stepping inside all I could think of was when I was playing Minecraft on an august evening, where the sun was shining warm beams of light inside. The days when life was simply remembering to do my homework before going into school the next day.....

And the smell of that one cherry candle left in my family’s Christmas decor box.
Oh no, I’M REMEBERING
I work as a Starbucks barista and this year it came out in august. The problem is the fact that we (my store) run so quick that last year we ran out before Halloween. Starbucks also changes the recipe every year so the drink never tastes the same from year to another. In addition to all that, we can add pumpkin sauce to anything so we have a latte, cappuccino, Frappuccino, iced coffee, hot coffee, cold brew, nitro cold brew, and literally whatever drink you want. On top of all that we have many different ways the specific drinks are made, like the new version this year is a cold brew with vanilla cold foam mixed with the pumpkin sauce and pumps of vanilla inside the cold brew. This comment took me almost the whole video to write and a few points I would have made matpat covered in the video (example: it’s the only drink around fall, while we have up to four drinks around winter)
Please don’t suspiciously disappear lol
So thats why i remember last year i was out with my squad of otakus and weebs and i remember the PSL tasting a little sweeter than the one i had on my road trip this year it was way more cinnamon-ny i guess
Disgusting.
Yo i would follow a blog or subreddit about this, this is weirdly so interesting
To be fair as a fellow barista the pumpkin cold foam was a thing last year as well, people are just going insane now and putting pumpkin foam on everything they can, chai's, pink drinks, I've even seen it on a frappucino. insane
I don't think I've ever had a pumpkin spice latte at Starbucks. That said, I owe a great debt of gratitude to Starbucks for making Pumpkin Spice the flavor of fall. It may only be sold once a year, but there is no scarcity in this house! Last year, we bought enough pumpkin spice tea and pancake mix that we only just ran out and this year we have added pudding to our haul. If creamer didn't go bad, we'd stock up on that too, lol.
Speaking of drinks, I think taking a closer look at bubble tea would also be cool... like its history, why it suddenly experienced a boom etc

As a Starbucks barista, I can confirm that the most popular drinks are the ones that don't taste a lot like coffee. Seriously, it's to the point where part of what I ask when I am helping someone find a drink is "do you like the taste of coffee or not?"
Is caramel latte count?
@@L16htW4rr10r Carmel lattes won't be as sweet as a Caramel Macchiato, especially if you get it upside down or iced.

@@roseb2854 In my country, its a bit weird. Sometimes Caramel latte is sweeter than caramel macchiato. But in other coffee shop, it will be the opposite. X,D
Other than that, Starbucks coffee is perfect for me. My stomach acid didn't act up when I drink. I remember hearing about a startup trying to make fake coffee. As in, replicating everything about coffee without actual coffee beans. And as they were trying to hone onto the perfect coffee flavor, they tried removing the bitter compounds and they said that was the perfect coffee.
"Pumpkin spice" does not refer to actual pumpkin, but rather the blend of spices that are commonly used to flavor pumpkin pie.
Makes even more sense why the pumpkin spice never hit me. While I love the weather and look of autumn, I’ve never had a particularly happy memory associated with it. All of mine are with Winter, so I’m pretty much obsessed with peppermint. I use peppermint essential oils for air freshener and I gorge myself on the peppermint mocha when it comes around.

“What.. nooo...”
Liking the effects but despising the taste is a very real thing. Coffee is an inherently vile beverage people have a stockholm syndrome with, because they like what it does to them.
Brewed coffee smells like acid to me. I don't understand why people like it. The only time it ever smells good is when people add extra things to it, and it still can't hide the taste. So yeah, I fully understand why people claim they like coffee yet the commercially ground and produced coffees they like are the ones that routinely try to bury the actual flavor of coffee.
I accept that people like it. Different people have different tastes. I just don't understand why they like it.
@@AlashiaTuol I love acidic things. I don't know if that has anything to do with my not as low stomach acid pH as is normal or not. I used to eat lemons like others ate oranges, as a small kid. I also ate oranges as oranges. And grape fruit.
Some people don't have saliva enzymes that are efficient in breaking down carbs while chewing, and those people usually are utterly bewildered by the fondness for bread the people with abnormally efficient saliva enzymes can have, because they don't get the same flavours nor the same brain reward effect from it. Genetic diversity is how species become more hardy to environmental changes, because if everyone were the same not only would the same resources get far more competition, but it would be so much easier for us all to die out from single issues.
@@Call-me-Al I typically love sour and acidic things too. I actually pour key lime juice on top of citrus desserts if they're too sweet, and when purchased, they often are. But coffee is like... A _bitter_ sour thing. It's hard to explain. To me it's less like edible acid and more like battery acid.
@@AlashiaTuol well, the so called "3rd wave" espressos I tried last year left me confused, wretching, and bewildered. The past half decade or maybe decade has had light roasts of coffe being the trend, which seems to taste too much like battery acid to me as espresso, while I absolutely love classic Italian style espressos. The third wave style espressos really don't seem to agree with my stomach nor taste buds. I definitely have a thing for some types of bitter flavours, though. Zucchini and Brussel sprout bitterness used to be really vile to me, but thankfully I have lost the ability to be able to taste the bitter compound in the former and the latter has been commercially bred to not be bitter these days. But even as a child I was quite fond of some types of bitter-sour, like green bell peppers, grape fruits, raw cranberries, and so on, which is why I chalk it up to genetics a lot.

Matpat, is a spring counterpart to the PSL: mcdonald's shamrock shake. It's limited time, gets you feeling like celebrating st. Patrick's day, is green, and it pretty much stands alone in terms of drinks like that.
Isn't jacksepticeye the shamrock shake and matpat is the psl
there is a fall one that i like at culvers called the salted caramel pumkin concrete mixer i get at least one each year however its started to get harder for me as i have a minor dairy allergy
The only difference is that you can actually get a PSL during its limited time period. Try to get a Shamrock Shake and they'll just tell you their machine's broken XD
I only drink the Shamrock shake because I like mint things
The problem with the Shamrock shake is that you can get a mint milkshake year long at most ice cream places anyways so McDonald's Shamrock shake is honestly nothing special.
3:48 i’m surprise he didn’t put a Diet Coke reference here
I thought he broke up with diet Coke.
“It’s not you, it’s me. Getting diabetes from how much I drink you”
“Matpat senpai, plz don’t leave me! I can change, I’ll be better! Please don’t go! It’s not my fault I’m manufactured with fake sugar that’s twice as fattening!”
“Im sorry, that’s the way things have to be”
“Matpat senpai, no-!”
Ahhh! I can’t, I can’t do it, 😂🤣 I can’t keep a straight face! *dies* 🤣😂😂
W-what? matpat? are you okay?
Well now I see how my stress started at such a young age. life wasn’t necessarily stressful from my perception but my teachers would always send me in the hallway for a little to no reason. It’s now so clear that my amygdala was making stress and I was freaking out internally because I knew I was missing out on some thing
I had no idea about this, and had one the other day and I really liked it, and I wasn't just jumping on a trend.
Apples and apple cider: "im the best for the fall season"
Pumpkin spice: "oh really??"
Bro I think I saw u comment on Jayztwocents Zen3 vid lol
@@aarushshukla9023 I haven't watched that video of his yet, so probably not mine. Maybe similar name
Yes really
Apple flavor is for the beginning of fall, pumpkin is for the end of the season
I love apple cider and apples. Second Cup came out with an "Apple pie" drink. I want to try it.
Video Idea Suggestion: How to optimize your gas station self-serve Icees in the fastest time.
So I like the occasional icee, and I had a chance to pick one up at a gas station the other day. If you don't tap the glass of Icee solution against the countertop a couple dozen times before you finish filling up your cup when you finally go to take a sip of Icee goodness through your spoon straw, as you poke the surface of your beverage, you will be met with dissappointment as it deflates like a sad balloon.
So there I was, filling up a cold one at the self-serve Freeze-E machine. I was tapping the cup against the countertop to make the icee settle, letting the air bubbles escape and as I re-re-refill my icee to get the most coke-cola icee goodness I could for a dollar and a thought occured to me. "Am I doing this right? Surely there is a more optimal way of compacting the icee into the jumbo sized icee cup than filling the cup to the top and gently tapping the cup against the countertop to sift out the air bubbles." I muttered to myself as the line continued to grow behind me, each gas station patron social distancing behind me, seething with contempt.
Any chance we could get a Food Theory analysis of the packing science of frozen beverages and the mechanical dynamics behind finding the optimal sifting motion to pack even more frozen goodness into each glass?
What
I want this even though I don't have Icees
You're supposed to stagger it, pour the drink stop for 3 seconds or so and then start it again, repeat this at least 3 times
@@ennuiedstealthgamesfan621 that is roughly my method, but the freeze-E brand at the speedway I frequent has a foamy-expansion effect to it. When it leaves the nozzle, it explodes and takes a while to "settle", usually about 30 seconds and the Icee has shrunk an inch in the cup and by the time I got to my car after checkout I was holding a cup less than half full. It's mostly air unless you shake it down flat.
What's an Icee? Is it just pop? Or is it like a slushie?
1:48 There's also a store I know of that sells pumpkin spice _CHILLI_ _MIX_ .
It's like they took a chai latte and added pumpkin pie to it. Two nostalgic things (especially with chai containing many types of spices that could be used in cooking even across cultures), made into something else.
0:25 THE GUY FINALLY GOT A VOICE!! After so long...
After never consuming a Pumpkin Spice Latte in my entire life, I suddenly want a Pumpkin Space Latte. God dangit Mat Pat, this was another Starbucks marketing scheme wasn't it?
Always has been
@@nonofyourbeeswax9228 jokes on you, you don't want Starbucks ever, it kind of sucks
honestly, i love the way "pumpkin spice" flavor tastes, always have. im weird and would constantly consume fall and winter flavors tho, id drink eggnog all year
Me too!

Starbucks’ Caramel Apple Cider is the way to go for Autumn nostalgia
I used to be so addicted to PSLs that I woke my family up at like, 4AM-ish to get the first Latte of the season (2017 I think?), I was little so i got decaf but still- Thank goodness I'm over it now 😆✨
Me: Starbucks is the place were Karen's go.

Food theory idea: What is classified as a cookie? Like what makes a cookie a cookie because some people call them biscuits like an Oreo, some people say that they are cookies and some people say they are a biscuit
Sadly this might be to similar to the hotdog episode to happen
@@superbeltman6197 yeah, that is true! But it’s still an interesting theory lol!
It's just a US/UK thing, it's not difficult. Here in the UK, cookies = biscuits, and biscuits = scones. What you call scones are inedible rocks made of flour and sugar.
@@WobblesandBean Hey, sugarflourrocks aren't that bad. Try putting some cream cheese on them.
@@WobblesandBean so just call any short sugary thing a scone
Food theroy idea: Just how much does smell effect your taste.
I was born without a sense of smell due to my nasal cavity forming uncorrectly. When I was talking to my doctor about having a surgery to fix the issue they said that having a sense of smell will totally change my life. I later found out that my sense of smell, or lack there of, has a huge effect on my taste buds.
So i thought it'd be cool to have a theroy on that.
Pretty sure it’s called pumpkin spice because it’s the same spices that are in pumpkin pie, not because it actually contains pumpkin.
"food is one of the simple thing i can enjoy in life"
matpat and the gang: are you sure about that?
Ha jokes on you this was there plan all along

I basically only love pumpkin spice flavored stuff because every year people at my school were allowed to bring in a treat for the class for their birthday, and mine was is in the fall so I would always bring in pumpkin spice cookies
