So prisons like this have to be for people who without a doubt are too violent

But they won´t be, that is exactly why this works in El Salavador but not in Mexico for instance. Because the cartels are in police, army, politics, large businesses... Everywhere. There is no cartel presence in El Salvador. This might sadly change however as the effect to removal of all the gangs... They have clean slate there now if they think that it might be useful for them. One hopes that the actual size of remaining population in El Salvador is too small to interest them. By remaining population, I mean the ones not in jail obviously.

When I told her I had watched video's about her home country she said the regular people in the country were very happy with what Bukele has accomplished in restoring order to the country. They get fed a pound of food twice a day, and it's often just rice, beans, tortilla and cream. They sometimes get pasta or some other dish, but that vegetarian burrito is like 75% of their meals. They are prepared by inmates from other prisons, weighed out so they're all the same, the guards make sure everyone eats and no one steals, and the inmates have to rinse out the dishes before returning them. They have to eat with their hands, but that's what tortillas are for. It's actually a really good system. Like everything else here, I wish the US would institute it.

Whenever I read these kinds of stories I always think the same.
Regardless of it you were right or not in the end, as a leader once you make a decision *you better fully commit to it and go all out*
Bukele did just that. His plan wouldn’t have worked as well as it has so far if he didn’t lock up *EVERYONE* innocent or otherwise when it came to being suspect
It’s true that his system is far from perfect. And when you drop the lenses of justice it’s true that what he has done is very concerning
What would stop his replacement when he inevitably retires from oppressing the innocent?
This could easily become a China/North Korea like dictatorship if they wanted to do so.
*But* it is true that Bukele saved the populous. His actions removed a festering wound from his society. People no longer need fear the gangs.
But he still has a obvious problem. What the hell is he gonna do with the prisoners now.
People suggest slave labor as casually as suggesting what color shirt to wear, but taking a step back that implication is quite scary as well.
Just because they are criminals doesn’t mean slavery is a totally acceptable option 😅
Then again most of these men aren’t just mere criminals but absolutely barbaric murderers.
It’s such a hard situation to deal with. There is no easy answer.
And the human rights orgs can go suck their own dicks

I deem El Salvador as the only case where dictatorship is appropriate.
And that is, because El Salvador never really had an actual democracy. Sure, they could vote for who sits in the president chair and does nothing before, but before this president, the gangs were the dictators of El Salvador.
So the only thing that happened is that the power that the gangs had was taken back by the government.
I sincerely hope that one day, El Salvador will be so safe on it's own, and just have such low poverty rates one day, that democracy can be allowed in this country again. But it'll take about two generations, one generation of people divided by gangsters and civilians who are glad that the gangsters are in jail, the second generation being people growing up with these strict policies, and without the gangs, heck, it may even take a third generation, when people who have grown up without gangs to begin with, are just friendly to each other, in order for El Salvador to be ready for democracy again.
But right now, this country just isn't ready for it.
And El Salvador is a big exception to me, because in order for a dictatorship to actually work, the dictator has to love their people and care about their well being. We have democracy because politicians are usually unrelieable af.
