    I moved to a school where one child in our grade was deaf. Everyone knew sign language but me when I first got there. I ended up learning ASL in just a few months, just naturally. We all learned to communicate with one awesome lovely student. Our teachers would say "no talking ... And no signing!" I still secretly sign some words discreetly when I'm displeased still. LMAO. I also taught my kids.:)

  • @ninnilator09

    I work with students with autism. ASL is a great way to help them communicate without using their voice. I keep learning from them. Eventually they know two languages and it helps us understand them clearly when they sign and use their voices. ASL is amazing for all people. Everyone needs to learn.

    💜 this. my daughter is deaf, she's about your age now. but when she was identified I was terrified and confused. ASL is a beautiful language-not pidgin language like some people think.

    • @viic8417
      @viic8417 Před 7 lety +7

      Hallow33n Luv! what do you mean "not pidgin language"? I sign pidgin (I'm hearing, I just took classes) and I'm confused as to what you're trying to say. I believe all forms of signing are beautiful as they're a form of expression.

    • @HeroPrinny
      @HeroPrinny Před 7 lety +2

      Right, she's saying that Pidgin Sign Language is not a language like ASL is. PSE is an abomination on the Deaf community.

    • @RobertDMoore
      @RobertDMoore Před 6 lety +4

      Preference of their choice, please respect each other's wishes for their Deaf children to have the best education as possible as they can provide. All sign languages even foreign ones such as Iranian, Singapore, Japanese and British, etc. are beautiful, existing form of each demographic where Deaf people live. It is fun when it comes to traveling out of USA and try experience meet Deaf people out there and you will be amazed how similar yours and theirs, sure easily understand each other also included face expression and body language. Great human interaction right there, enough to enrich your understanding on how important sign languages to them and you'll overcome stigma of some kind toward Deaf culture, just be supportive and encourage all to use their mothers' sign language teach the Deaf infants as first language before speaking language.

    • @Nehmi
      @Nehmi Před 4 lety +1

      @@viic8417 ASL is a full-blown language with native speakers. A pidgin is a mish-mash of words/signs that has no native speakers and is very unstable in terms of grammar and vocabulary. It's not a language per se but rather an artificial method of communication between two groups who don't speak the same language. However, the human brain can take a pidgin, make it regular and give it a set grammar in one generation if enough children learn the pidgin as a native language. Once this happens, the pidgin becomes a creole, which is a mix of languages, that has a set grammar and vocabulary. ASL is a full-on language like English, Arabic, Mandarin or Swahili.

    Many hearing people are not aware that for infants identified as deaf - living in a supportive environment - responsive signing often begins much earlier than typical spoken speech. It is not unusual to see deaf children under one year old articulating specific requests for food and other things.

    It's a nice video! But I feel like this option you gave out is very stereotypical for every deaf person with hearing parents. I was born with bilateral profound hearing loss to hearing parents, and I received my first cochlear implant at age 3 1/2 in 1997. My parents decided not to teach me ASL because my parents knew I want to speak (or to imitate their mouths) with everyone and not feel isolated from them. Growing up in NYC, I rarely see ASL in public. Now as a graduated student with bilateral cochlear implants, I am able to verbally communicate with everyone without hassle! I HATE when someone assumes that I sign because of my hearing loss. It's exactly like a stranger asking my Korean-American friend if he speaks Chinese.
    I didn't realize that this video was from 2016....somehow it popped in my feeds!
